I can't send email, but I can receive email This article describes how to test why you cannot send out emails, but you can receive them without any problems. Steps to take: 1.) If you have a Microsoft Windows machine, then click on Start -> Run 2.) Type in there cmd or command, if cmd doesn't work, and hit enter. 3.) A black window, in form of a small box will open up, in there type: telnet yourdomainname 25 and hit enter (make sure yourdomainname is in form of domainname.com, for example if your domain name is ezpublishing, then you would type telnet ezpublishing.com 25) 4.) Once you hit enter, the screen should clear and it should show on the top: 220 someserver.com ESMTP and a blinking cursor on the bottom of that. If this shows up as described, then your smtp is working. If not proceed to step 5. 5.) If you don't the message described in step 4, but instead you get an error, then the problem is on your ISP's side. Please contact them and ask them why they're blocking outgoing port 25 to other servers. Email FAQs - Lately I can only receive mail but can't send mail. READ ON GOING DISCUSSION TOPIC ON THIS FOR COMPREHENSIVE ASSISTANCE This used to be a very limited problem, but more and more dial-up providers are changing their settings so we've decided to include this in the helpdesk. The problem is likely that your ISP has installed some new fangled spam filtering software which won't allow you to send email out of their connection through any outgoing mail server but theirs. The most recent ISP to implement this change is MSN. The only work around is to change your outgoing mailserver on all mailboxes to the ISP's outgoing mailserver. This doesn't change how your mail appears to someone receiving it (unless they get a kick out of reading mail headers). Your email will still come from yourmailbox @yourdomain.com and when they hit reply it will still come back the same. Basically it's just taking a slightly different path to get there. So, how do you know what your outgoing mailserver is? Well, if you have a mailbox that you're running that is an ISP based box (like something @earthlink.net or something @email.msn.com then you can look at the properties on that account to find out what outgoing mailserver it uses. If you don't have an ISP based mailbox you can look at you can try going to your ISP's website and see if they have the information posted somewhere. If all else fails, call them and ask what your outgoing mailserver setting should be. Now, once you know what your new outgoing mailserver should be, here's how to fix it:

In Outlook Express on the top menu go to Tools, then down to Accounts. In the Accounts window that opens (yours will have accounts in it, not be blank like the one at left) single click on the mail account you are having problems sending from. This will open the Properties window. On the Outgoing mail(smtp) line enter whatever your ISP's outgoing mailserver is. Then move to the bottom of the page. Under the line where it says Outgoing Mail Server, check the box next to My server requires authentication. Then click the Settings... button.

This opens the Outgoing Mail Server settings Window. Click the circle next to Log on using. This will ungrey the Account name and password boxes. In Account name, type the userid you use when you dial into your ISP. Password is your dial-up password. When finished, click OK and you'll be returned to the Properties window above. On the Properties window, click Apply and then OK. When you've finished with the changes make sure to close Outlook Express then reopen it to make sure it takes the changes. If messages were already sitting in your outbox and they continue to error out you may need to remove them and re-write them to be sure they use the new settings. I can't send Email, but I can get Email okay. NUMBER ONE REASON The number one cause of this is your ISP. Many ISP's are blocking this feature. This is because spammers send email through other servers. By blocking the feature it prevents spammers from relaying mail through spam servers. Find out from your ISP if this is the case. We have talked to hundreds of ISP's about this issue. Sometimes you have to "craft" your question to get a straight answer. They are far too quick to say that they have no features blocked when our tests show that they do. Here's what to say. "If I have a mail account on another server will I be able to both get and "send" mail through that other server?" If they say that you won't be able to send then here are your options: If you like the ISP and want to stay there then you will have to use their outbound mail service. Ask them what to use as the outbound server. This will not change your email address for your account here. In fact, people never see the name of the server you send mail through, they only see your return address. This won't hurt a thing. If you don't like your ISP then perhaps choose one that does not restrict you. NUMBER TWO REASON

This only happens with Outlook and Outlook express. Other mail clients don't suffer this problem. Here's how to fix it. Open outlook and go to Tools then Accounts. Open the properties for the account you are having problems with. Uncheck the box that says "My Server Requires Authentication" as seen below. See if you can send mail. Generally you will be able to. Now re-check the box. The problem should now be cleared. See below for the cause if interested. Cause of the above condition with Outlook and Outlook Express. As you know the servers use security in order to send mail. This works by the server asking your mail software what the password is for the account that you are trying to send mail as. These two programs cache the password information. The problem starts with a transport layer failure anywhere on the net. When you start to send the server gets part of your information but does not complete the transaction. You try again and here's what happens. Let's say your password is 1234. Since the transaction was interrupted and you try again on the second send the server gets "12341234", the password twice. Since this is wrong the server won't let you send. By un-checking the box shown above the

server gets the password once and the problem is cleared. Once cleared you can recheck the box. The problem will sometimes clear if you wait for a while as the information is only cached for so long. The common question is, "How often does this happen?" We have seen it daily on an account where they were having connection problems on their end. As soon as their connection was fixed they problem went away. This was the worst case. Others have never had the problem while still others may see it once a year or less. It only happens under very obscure conditions on the net.
