2 Part I: Reading Comprehension (30 marks) Study the following passage and complete Sections A to D. ELDERLY EAGER TO SURF 1. The Hong Kong Council of Social Service pointed out the lack of support available for older people who want to acquire computer skills. According to the results of the study carried out by the organization, six out of ten elderly people want to learn how to use computers but only twenty-two per cent have logged on in the past six months. 2. Of 2,379 people aged 60 and above, about 60 per cent said they wanted to use computers. More than 70 per cent believed computers could help them keep in touch with society and also help them understand the world better. More than 40 per cent said learning computers would make it easier for them to talk with their children. 3. But despite their wish, only 22 per cent of elderly people had used computers in the past 6 months. Half of them said the use of English was the biggest problem for them. More than 40 per cent found them too complicated to operate. About one-third said they had no computers at home and could not afford to buy one. 4. Many elderly people want to learn computer skills but have not enough support. In some cases, they are even told by their children or grandchildren not to touch the computer at home, said the council director Hui Yin-fat. Family support is essential and young people should support their elderly relatives and help them to learn. 5. Mr. Hui also urged the Government to provide free software and cheaper hardware for the elderly. 6. Ho Chong, 71, a retired teacher, said he spent on average 2 hours a day surfing the Internet. I don t want to lag behind the rest of the society. Now I can e-mail my children and read newspaper online. It s very convenient.
