STRUCTURE OF THE COMPARE AND CONTRAST ESSAY (FOUR PARAGRAPHS) 1. PARAGRAPH 1 - INTRODUCTION (4) 2. PARAGRAPH 2 - SIMILARITIES (8) 3. PARAGRAPH 3 - DIFFERENCES (8) 4. PARAGRAPH 4 - CONCLUSION (2-4) PARAGRAPH #1 (4 sentences) 1. SENTENCE 1 - Write a HOOK sentence. 2. SENTENCE 2 - Write an ANCHOR STATEMENT or TOPIC SENTENCE. This sentence relates the HOOK to the topic. 3. SENTENCE 3 - Write a sentence stating that the two texts are alike. 4. SENTENCE 4 - Write a sentence stating that the two texts are also different. PARAGRAPH #1 (4) 1. Write a HOOK sentence When a person is confronted with a life-threatening situation, the normal person can accomplish the impossible. 2. ANCHOR STATEMENT - Write a sentence relating the hook sentence to the topic of the paper In the Greek myth, Daedalus and Icarus, Theseus, a young Athenian, found himself in such a situation as he confronted and slayed the blood thirsty minotaur. 3. Write a sentence stating the texts are similar The Pink and Green versions of Daedalus and Icarus have many similarities. 4. Write a sentence stating the texts are also different Although these stories are very alike, they are also very different. WRITTEN PARAGRAPH (INTRO) When a person is confronted with a life-threatening situation, the normal person can accomplish the impossible. In the Greek myth, Daedalus and Icarus, Theseus, a young Athenian, found himself in such a situation as he confronted and slayed the blood thirsty minotaur. The Pink and Green versions of Daedalus and Icarus have many similarities. Although these stories are very alike, they are also very different.

PARAGRAPH 2 - SIMILARITIES (8 sentences) 1. SENTENCE 1 - Write a sentence stating that the texts are alike. 2. SENTENCE 2 - Write a sentence stating one similarity shared between the texts. 3. SENTENCE 3 - Write a sentence PROVIDING textual evidence from that specific text. 4. SENTENCE 4 - Write a sentence explaining the textual evidence you QUOTED. 5. SENTENCE 5 - Write a sentence stating the second text is similar to the first text. 6. SENTENCE 6 - Write a sentence PROVIDING textual evidence from that specific text. 7. SENTENCE 7 - Write a sentence explaining the textual evidence you QUOTED. 8. SENTENCE 8 - Write a sentence stating the texts are alike. PARAGRAPH 2 - SIMILARITIES (8) 1. Write a sentence that says the 2 texts are alike The Green and Pink myths of Daedalus and Icarus have many similar qualities. 2. Write a sentence telling 1 similarity of the texts One way the stories are the same is by showing the reader that Theseus was a chilvarous man. 3. Provide textual evidence (source 1) For Instance, In the Green text, the author introduces Thesues saying he promised his father he would somehow kill the minotaur and return home safely (Green Edition/pg. 1) 4. Explanation of textual evidence (source 1) When young Theseus first stepped foot on the island of Crete, he had already planned on eradicating the beast known as the Minotaur. 5. Write a sentence saying source 2 is similar (restating similarity from sentence 2) Like the green version, the pink story reveals the character of Theseus as a courageous man. 6. Provide textual evidence (source2) For example, In the Pink version, the author tells the reader that Theseus came to try to slay the Minotaur (Pink Edition/pg. 1). 7. Explanation of textual evidence (source2) When Theseus came to Crete, he already had a plan to take out the Minotaur which shows his bravery because no one has ever survived once meeting the Minotaur. 8. Concluding sentence The way the two myths reveal Theseus as a courageous man is a major similarity between them.

The Green and Pink myths of Daedalus and Icarus have many similar qualities. One way the stories are the same is by showing the reader that Theseus was a chilvarous man. For Instance, In the Green text, the author introduces Thesues saying he promised his father he would somehow kill the minotaur and return home safely (Green Edition/pg. 1). When young Theseus first stepped foot on the island of Crete, he had already planned on eradicating the beast known as the Minotaur. Like the green version, the pink story reveals the character of Theseus as a courageous man. For example, In the Pink version, the author tells the reader that Theseus came to try to slay the Minotaur (Pink Edition/pg. 1). When Theseus came to Crete, he already had a plan to take out the Minotaur which shows his bravery because no one has ever survived once meeting the Minotaur. The way the two myths reveal Theseus as a courageous man is a major similarity between them.

Although the Green and Pink myths are alike in certain ways, they are also very different from one another. 2. SENTENCE 2 - Write a sentence stating one difference between the two texts. One way the stories of Daedalus and Icarus are different from one another is that the Green story uses many descriptive words in order to better show the personality of Theseus as a chivalrous man. 3. SENTENCE 3 - Write a sentence PROVIDING textual evidence of the difference. For instance, in the Green passage, the author refers to Theseus as a superhuman (Green Edition/pg. 1) when he is introduced in the story. 4. SENTENCE 4 - Write a sentence explaining the textual evidence you QUOTED. It is here in the story, the author provides more information and details about Theseus in order to allow the reader to get a better image of his character. 5. SENTENCE 5 - Write a sentence stating the how the second text version differs from the first text. START this sentence with a CONTRASTING TRANSITION PHRASE. See my Transitions Handout and my Example Essay on my website. On the other hand, In the Pink version, the author does not use any descriptive words whils explaining the character of Theseus. 6. SENTENCE 6 - Write a sentence PROVIDING textual evidence from that specific text. In fact, the Pink text offers little or no deteails about the personality of Theseus. 7. SENTENCE 7 - Write a sentence explaining the textual evidence you QUOTED. With this in mind, it is clear that the author s purpose for the writing of the story was to just make the audience aware of the myth. 8. SENTENCE 8 - Write a sentence stating the texts are different. The amount of details the different stories give are a great difference betwenn the two texts.

Although the Green and Pink myths are alike in certain ways, they are also very different from one another.
