LEARNING TOGETHER PUBLIC EDUCATION IN ALBERTA

Welcome to Alberta In Alberta we recognize the importance and value of our multicultural society. We appreciate our diverse racial and cultural composition and believe that sharing this diversity adds to the richness of life in Alberta. The values of multiculturalism are taught to children in Alberta through our inclusive public education system. Alberta s public education system is open to all students. We integrate new Canadians and embrace the cultural diversity they bring to our public education system. All Albertans benefit from classrooms where all children learn together. Education in Alberta By law, children living in Alberta must attend school between the ages of 6 and 16. The government is required to provide free, universally accessible education to every child under the age of 20 up to Grade 12. Universal education is delivered through the public education system. 2

Public Education Alberta s parents prefer public education over private and home schooling. Over 92 per cent of students attend school in the public education system. Public education in Alberta consists of three types of schools: Public universal education available across the province Separate Roman Catholic or Protestant education available in some regions of the province Francophone public education specifically mandated to maintain the French language, culture and identity Public education accepts all students is fully funded by Alberta taxpayers must not charge tuition Some schools may charge fees for specialty programs is governed by democratically elected local school boards must teach provincially approved curriculum Students are ensured the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma, and enter technical institutes, colleges and universities employs certificated teachers who are members of the Alberta Teachers Association Teachers are held to high standards of professional conduct and practice Alberta is proud of its exceptional public education system, which offers high quality programs and services to all of Alberta s children and youth. Albertans recognize public education as a public investment for the benefit of everyone. 3

Choices in Public Education The right school for your child s unique learning needs is available in Alberta s public education system. Parents can decide which school they want their child to attend and can choose from schools that offer a wide variety of programs and services. English as an Additional Language (EAL) programs are available in many schools for students who are learning English. EAL programs also help students learn the norms and customs of life in Canada. Public schools are knowledgeable and experienced at providing exceptional EAL education. Some schools also offer language, cultural and religion programs that help your child continue learning about his or her home country. Recognizing the cultural diversity of new Canadians is a shared value in Alberta and important to all of us. Schools also offer programming choices that emphasize specific areas of study, such as arts, sports, science, academic challenge or leadership. Some schools even offer alternative learning environments, such as self-directed study or girls-only classes. Contact your local school board for more information about program options available in your community. A list of school boards is provided on pages 6 and 7 of this booklet. 4

Enrolling your child You can check with your local public, separate or francophone school board to discuss which school is right for your child (see pages 6 and 7). Once you have made your decision, you should go to the school directly to enrol your child. You will need to bring your child, an interpreter (if needed) and whichever of the following documents you have: Your child s identification: passport, birth certificate or permanent residence status documents School documents from your home country: report cards, course outlines, examples of school work Your child s immunization records The school principal will help determine which class or grade placement is right for your child. 5
