MECHANICAL PIPING PAINTING & IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS This document shall supersede all other published data concerning mechanical piping painting and identification as described below until such time that any conflicting published data is changed to match. The following is a summary of instructions which should be communicated to contractors to simplify the mechanical piping painting and identification requirements. This section is divided into five (5) areas for general clarification. 1. MECHANICAL ROOMS: Insulated Piping shall conform to the following: o Band plastic coverings with appropriate color on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Alpha-numeric system identification (e.g. CHW1S, CHW1R) on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Flow arrows on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Banding, system identification, and flow arrows shall be placed on shorter intervals where piping visibility is affected by congestion of piping, ductwork, electrical conduit and the like; o Stencils may be accepted if paint does not run on the plastic pipe covering. Manufactured pipe labelling systems may be accepted. Un-insulated piping (black steel or otherwise) shall conform to the following: [EXCEPT Natural Gas] o Mould resistant paint light reflective color (can be same color as walls) o Band piping with appropriate color on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Alpha-numeric system identification (e.g. CNDW1S, CNDW1R) on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Flow arrows on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less; o Banding, system identification, and flow arrows shall be placed on shorter intervals where piping visibility is affected by congestion of piping, ductwork, electrical conduit and the like; o Stencils are acceptable; o Manufactured adhesive labels are acceptable if the adhesive is durable. Natural gas piping shall conform to the following: o Entire piping system painted throughout the building; o Mould resistant paint (see color chart below); o Alpha-numeric system identification on 20 ft (6 m) intervals or less (e.g. Natural Gas LP, Natural Gas HP); o System identification shall be placed on shorter intervals where piping visibility is affected by congestion of piping, ductwork, electrical conduit and the like; o Stencils are acceptable; o Manufactured adhesive labels are acceptable if the adhesive is durable. 2. EXPOSED AREAS: [other than Mechanical Rooms] Same conformance criteria as Mechanical Rooms except that the paint need not be mould resistant. 3. CONCEALED AREAS: [EXCEPT within walls] Same conformance criteria as Mechanical Rooms. REV 0 Page 1 of 2
4. HIDDEN PIPING WITHIN WALLS: No system identification except where the mechanical piping enters or leaves the wall. 5. HIGH HUMIDITY AREAS: [Concealed or otherwise] Same conformance criteria as Mechanical Rooms. Notes: 1. Piping system identification, banding, and flow arrows must be provided on both sides of a pipe passing through a wall, at all sides of tees, and behind access doors. 2. Considerations shall be given to the size and scope of the project (e.g. asbestos abatement, small piping alteration, overhaul to a portion of the mechanical systems). In projects where the entire piping system within a room is not being replaced, piping identification may be done to match the existing undisturbed piping. For example, if the existing piping is completely painted canvas wrap, then the newly modified piping system may be completely painted to match the existing. Discuss with the Project Manager and/or the Design Consultant. Provide system identification labels, flow arrows, and stripes as described in this document. 3. Refer to accompanying Pipe Identification Color Code Standard chart. 4. Apply color bands at both sides of the piping system identification stencil. 5. Banding shall consist of a 12 wide colored band, or wider to accommodate system identification labels, with a 3 wide colored stripe overtop of the band on either side of the system identification label. 6. The band shall match the color in the chart for the appropriate pipe service. 7. The stripe shall match the color in the chart for the appropriate pipe service. 8. It is the Contractor s responsibility to devise their method of banding given the following guidelines: a. Banding must be permanently fastened. b. Banding must not be affected by heat, moisture, etc to the extent where it becomes unrecognizable, changed in appearance over time, or no longer adheres to the pipe. c. The Contractor shall submit a sample of the proposed banding method to the University for review and approval. The University reserves the right to refuse the proposed system at no expense to themselves if in their judgment the proposed banding method does not meet the acceptance criteria. In this situation, the Contractor must submit alternative methods until a method satisfactory to the University has been approved. Any comments can be directed to the undersigned.
