Work Experience Requirements Minimum of two years as a concurrent documentation specialist U.S.-based short-term inpatient facility We define concurrent documentation review as: Working in medical records in the current time When the patient is presently in house as a patient In collaboration with physicians and medical team members caring for the patient 9 Education Requirements RN, MD, DO, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P plus two years of experience as CDS; OR Associate s degree in allied health plus three years of experience as CDS. The education component must include college-level course work in anatomy and physiology, plus medical terminology; OR Formal education (accredited, college-level course work) in human anatomy and physiology, plus medical terminology, plus three years of experience as CDS. 10

What Experience Doesn t Qualify? Documenting in one s own medical practice (e.g., as a licensed U.S. medical practitioner, a foreign medical graduate, etc.) Documenting as a resident, intern, or medical student Retrospective review Auditing experience Educator Outpatient coder Holding the CDIP credential or other CDI certificate 11 How to Apply Download and complete the exam application off the ACDIS website and submit it (via fax, email, or U.S. mail) Use black ink please write legibly Pay by check or we will call for your credit card You must pay for the exam in advance 12

Application Approval Total approval time is two to three weeks The exam company will send you an email (and letter by mail) with exam scheduling instructions You have 120 days to schedule and take your exam Your exam ID number will be on the scheduling notices You will schedule your exam on a day, time, and location convenient for you You can schedule online at www.goamp.com Read and understand the rescheduling requirements (must give two days notice) You may reschedule once without financial penalty 13 Preparing for Your Exam CCDS Exam Study Guide by Fran Jurcak Available on the HCPro website The current edition is copyrighted 2012 but is still valid It is being rewritten for the new ICD-10 exam (which will be in effect in mid-january 2016) The CDI Boot Camps are not designed to be nor are they promoted to be CCDS exam prep classes 14

Are There Other Exam Prep Resources? At this time, there are not. HCPro and ACDIS are exploring the best options to provide additional, cost-saving exam prep resources such as: Additional test questions Online learning On-site exam prep classes 17 Before You Take the Exam Review the CCDS Candidate Handbook one more time for: What identification is required for admission Which resources you may bring into the exam room 18

If You Pass the Exam Your exam will be scored immediately and you will leave with your results You will receive by mail a certificate and lapel pin by the middle of the month following the exam You must recertify every two years on the anniversary of the day you pass the exam Download and review a list of approved CEUs on the recertification page on the ACDIS website You are responsible for knowing your recertification due date 19 If You Do Not Pass the Exam Reschedule at your convenience 90-day wait between attempts One-time discounted re-exam fee is $125 Subsequent attempts are at full price Re-exam application is on the ACDIS website 20

What s Next for the CCDS Exam? A new version on or around January 15, 2016 Will incorporate both ICD-10 and quality initiatives 21 Stay in Touch With the CCDS Office You are responsible for notifying the ACDIS home office of email and mailing address changes. ACDIS is not responsible for expired certifications due to our inability to reach you by email or U.S. mail. 22
