It is recommended to use in the first place BN - luricants when operating on heavy fuel. This recommendation is valid especially for engines having wet luricating oil sump and using heavy fuel with sulphur content aove 2.0 % mass. BN luricants can e used when operating on heavy fuel as well if experience shows that the luricating oil BN equilirium remains at an acceptale level. On heavy fuel operation BN luricants are recommended to e used only in special cases, such as installations equipped with an SR catalyst. Lower BN products eventually have a positive influence on cleanliness of the SR catalyst.

2 (8) DE0570 With BN oils luricating oil change intervals may e rather short, ut lower total operating costs may e achieved ecause of etter plant availaility provided that the maintenance intervals of the SR catalyst can e increased. If oth distillate fuel and residual fuel are used periodically as fuel, luricating oil quality has to e chosen according to instructions eing valid for residual fuel operation, i.e. BN is the minimum. Optimum BN in this kind of operation depends on the length of operating periods on oth fuel qualities as well as of sulphur content of fuels in question. Thus in particular cases BN or even higher BN luricating oils should e used. The intervals etween luricating oil changes may e extended y adding oil daily to keep the oil level constantly close to the maximum level. n example of BN depletion curve with different BN luricating oils is shown elow. 60 BN ondening limit: mg KOH/g Oil Volume: 0.6 l/kw (Wet Sump) Fuel sulphur content: 2.5 w-% 0-0 00 00 6000 8000 10000 SERVIE HOURS BN Oil BN Oil BN Oil dditives The oils should contain additives that give good oxidation staility, corrosion protection, load carrying capacity, neutralisation of acid comustion and oxidation residues and should prevent deposit formation on internal engine parts (piston cooling gallery, piston ring zone and earing surfaces in particular). ONDEMNING LIMITS FOR USED LUBRITING OIL When estimating the condition of used luricating oil, the following properties along with the corresponding limit values must e noted. If the limits are exceeded, measures must e taken. ompare also with guidance values for fresh luricating of the rand used. E.g. if company s BN oil is filled into the oil system and top-up with same ompany s BN oil is desired, that can e done provided that oth products are ased on same ase oils and additive technology. Otherwise the luricating oil system has to e drained and then filled with another rand y following the procedure descried here elow. In order to minimize the risk of luricating oil foaming, deposit formation, locking of luricating oil filters, damage of engine components, etc., the following procedure should e followed when luricating oil rand is changed from one to another: If possile, change the luricating oil rand in connection with an engine (piston) overhaul Drain old luricating oil from the luricating oil system lean the luricating oil system in case of an excessive amount of deposits on the surfaces of engine components, like crankcase, camshaft compartment, etc. Fill the luricating oil system with fresh luricating oil If the procedure descried aove is not followed, responsiility of possile damage and malfunctions caused y luricating oil change should always e agreed etween an oil company and customer.

4 (8) DE0570 PPROVED LUBRITING OIL QULITIES FOR WÄRTSILÄ 46F ENGINES Should unapproved luricating oils e used during the engine warranty period, and there exist no agreement with the engine manufacturer aout testing, the engine guarantee does not hold. 5 (8) DE0570 HEVY FUEL OIL OPERTION Today s modern trunk piston diesel engines are stressing the luricating oils heavily due to a.o. low specific luricating oil consumption. lso ingress of residual fuel comustion products into the luricating oil can cause deposit formation on the surface of certain engine components resulting in severe operating prolems. Due to this many luricating oil suppliers have developed new luricating oil formulations with etter fuel and luricating oil compatiility. The luricating oils mentioned in Tale 2 are representing new detergent/ dispersant additive chemistries and have shown good performance in Wärtsilä engines. Tale 2. pproved system oils - fuel category, recommended in the first place when operating on heavy fuel in order to reach full service intervals. Turocharger oil can also e used in the governor. In low amient conditions it may e necessary to use a multigrade oil (e.g. SE 5W-) to get a good control during start-up.
