For application in these engines an alkaline trunk piston engine oil should be selected, which has good detergent and dispersant properties and performs well in medium speed diesel engines operating on distillate and residual fuel. 3 Lubricating Oil Requirements nd Quality For Sulzer Z, Z, ZS and ZS Type Trunk-Piston Diesel Engines 3.1 Viscosity Viscosity class 3.2 Viscosity Index Min lkalinity (BN) The required lubricating oil alkalinity is tied to the fuel specified for the engine, which is shown in Table 1. The application of a BN - lubricating oil is mainly restricted to the engines, which have very low lubricating oil consumption and whenever a BN lubricating oil is not sufficient to maintain the BN above mg KOH/g. If both distillate fuel and residual fuel are used periodically as fuel, lubricating oil quality has to be chosen according to instructions being valid for residual fuel operation, i.e. BN is the minimum. In heavy fuel operation the use of BN lubricants in the installations equipped with an SR catalyst can eventually have a positive influence on cleanliness of the SR catalyst compared to the use of higher BN lubricants. Optimum BN in this kind of operation depends on the length of operating periods on both fuel qualities as well as of sulphur content of fuels in question. Thus in particular cases BN or even higher BN lubricating oils should be used. The intervals between lubricating oil changes may be extended by adding oil daily to keep the oil level constantly close to the maximum level. n example of BN depletion curve with different BN lubricating oils is shown below. If one of these limits is reached, remedial action should be taken to bring the oil charge back to its normal condition. This could mean complete or partial renewal of the oil charge, although it might also be sufficient to intensify treatment of the oil in the centrifugal separator, for example by decreasing the intervals between the discharge cycles, or to treat the oil charge in a renovating tank. ompare also with guidance values for fresh lubricating of the brand used. E.g. if company s BN oil is filled into the oil system and top-up with same ompany s BN oil is desired, that can be done provided that both products are based on same base oils and additive technology. Otherwise the lubricating oil system has to be drained and then filled with another brand by following the procedure described here below. In order to minimize the risk of lubricating oil foaming, deposit formation, blocking of lubricating oil filters, damage of engine components, etc., the following procedure should be followed when lubricating oil brand is changed from one to another: If possible, change the lubricating oil brand in connection with an engine (piston) overhaul Drain old lubricating oil from the lubricating oil system lean the lubricating oil system in case of an excessive amount of deposits on the surfaces of engine components, like crankcase, camshaft compartment, etc. Fill the lubricating oil system with fresh lubricating oil. If the procedure described above is not followed, responsibility of possible damage and malfunctions caused by lubricating oil change should always be agreed between an oil company and customer. 6 Lubricating Oil Maintenance nd Treatment Frequent oil analysis at running hours intervals is recommended. Samples should be taken from the specially fitted sampling cock while the engine is running, or the oil is still hot. The quantity of oil in circulation should be the same each time a sample is taken. Samples must be well labelled, representative of the complete oil charge in circulation and should not be contaminated after being drawn. The sample cock should be purged, a one litre sample drawn during a period of 10 minutes, the sample mixed thoroughly and decanted into a sampling bottle. 5 TEHNIL Subject Engine type Ref. Date Document No. DL Issue Page Requirements and Oil Quality SEE PPLITION WIT-S T-ZLL.0003.GB / The additive and wear metal content and the degree of contamination by fuel can also be determined. The significance of the analysis results is best assessed if they are considered as a whole and in relation to the past analytical history of the lubricating oil. The correct interpretation of an oil trend requires a knowledge of the specific lubricating oil consumption, the fuel oil type and how the lubricating oil is replenished. The condition of the lubricating oil depends on the amount of lubricating oil in circulation. The level of the main lubricating oil tank should be kept within a range of 70% to 90. In the course of time even the best quality lubricating oil shows signs of deterioration in condition due to ageing, oxidation and contamination caused by the working conditions, in such a way that a change of the oil charge is necessary. However it is not possible to give a fixed interval for this purpose since this is influenced by the operating conditions and the efficiency of the lubricating oil treatment. 7 pproved Lubricating Oil Qualities for Sulzer Z, Z, ZS and ZS Type Trunk-Piston Diesel Engines Should unapproved lubricating oils be used during the engine warranty period, and there exist no agreement with the engine manufacturer about testing, the engine guarantee does not hold. 7.1 Gas Oil nd Marine Diesel Oil Operation If gas oil or marine diesel oil is used as fuel, lubricating oils with a BN of are recommended to be used. lso BN lubricating oils included in Table 5 can be used in gas oil and Marine Diesel Oil fuelled engines. Due to this many lubricating oil suppliers have developed new lubricating oil formulations with better fuel and lubricating oil compatibility. The lubricating oils mentioned in Table 4 are representing modern detergent/dispersant additive chemistries and have shown good performance in Sulzer engines. The following guidelines are supplementary to those requirements: If the nominal operating pressure is high (> 1380 kpa / 0 psi), as for most modern Sulzer engines, a synthetic polyalphaolefin based lubricating oil should be used. ertain ester based oils attack seals and can form varnish, and should not be used unless recommended by the manufacturer. Older engines have governors with lower nominal operating pressures (< 1380 kpa / 0 psi), for which a mineral oil based lubricating oil can also be used. The lubricating oil viscosity should be in the range: Wärtsilä Italia Sp Bagnoli della Rosandra, 334 Telephone : Services 318 San Dorligo Della Valle (TS) ITLY Fax :
10 TEHNIL Subject Engine type Ref. Date Document No. DL Issue Page Requirements and Oil Quality SEE PPLITION WIT-S T-ZLL.0003.GB / - ISO VG 68 for oil sump temperatures ca. 60 to 75 - ISO VG 100 for oil sump temperatures ca. 75 to 90 The oil must be kept clean and an oil charge which shows distinct signs of discoloration should be replaced. Synthetic oils should be changed at least once a year and mineral oils at least every 00 running hours. If the nominal operating pressure is very high (> 1790 kpa / 260 psi), as on all engines with cylinders or more, then the synthetic oil should be changed at least every 6 months, or if the oil sump operating temperature exceeds 90 then more frequently. n oil of viscosity class SE or is suitable and usually the same oil can be used as in the engine. Turbocharger oil can also be used in the governor. In low temperature ambient conditions it may be necessary to use a multigrade oil (e.g. SE 5W-) to get a good control during start-up. 7.5 Other pproved Lubricating Oils For Turbocharger/Governor There is additionally available a number of mineral based lubricating oils, which can be used in BB s VTR series turbochargers, if the turbocharger speed and pressure ratio in a specific installation are within the limits set by BB. However, the special low friction synthetic oils listed above are offering longer change intervals and better performance and are thus preferred in the first place also in older installations with less severe operating conditions concerning turbocharger speed and pressure ratio. The list of mineral based oils can be supplied by request. 7.6 pproved Lubricating Oils For Engine Turning Device It is recommended to use EP-gear oils, viscosity 0-0 cst at = ISO VG 460 as lubricating oils for turning device.
