RADAR Key Scheme N&C Phlexicare RADAR Key Scheme The Disability Rights People (formerly RADAR) promotes a U.K. national scheme, whereby locks specially manufactured are fitted to toilets and can only be operated using a RADAR key. These keys are available to disabled or registered blind people to enable them to access the facilities. This aims to give protection against vandalism or misuse, so that a clean functional toilet is available. After its launch in 1981 several local authorities introduced the scheme for toilets that had previously been unlocked but others simply changed the locks or used it for new toilets. Each year RADAR publishes a directory of accessible toilets for disabled people that are fitted with the RADAR lock. By the mid 80 s the directory included details of over 300 toilets provided by almost 350 local authorities and a wide variety of other organisations in all parts of the UK. The current directory includes details of toilets approaching 10,000 in number in all parts of the country with tens of thousands of keys in circulation. Local disability organisations and local authorities have also become directly involved in RADAR key distribution. It should be remembered that the RADAR lock system is rudimentary and not designed as or intended for use as a high security locking system. RADAR Lockset A complete lockset comprising a 6 lever Mortice lock and engraved furniture which can be supplied polished silver, polished aluminium (P.A.A.) and polished gold aluminium (P.G.), incorporating an external indicator and emergency coin release. All locksets are supplied with one bow shaped handle key and fixings. Handing Only two hands are required, as the latch bolt can be easily reversed for inward or outward opening doors. To determine which hand is required, hand the lockset as follows: Standing inside the toilet If the hinges are on the right - you will need a right hand lockset If the hinges are on the left - you will need a left hand lockset Lever handle should be fitted between 800mm 1050mm above the floor (900mm preferred). Once inside, the door is locked by lifting the lever upwards, which changes the external indicator to red. In addition to the traditional RADAR mortice lockset the RADAR padlock and RADAR rimlock provide an extension to the national key scheme (NKS) and have been adopted by the National Trust, the railways and similar organisations. In rural areas it may be necessary to prevent stock straying or horses or motorcycles from damaging footpaths. The National Trust and similar bodies have properties at which only cars carrying disabled people are allowed into certain areas. On some railway stations, access to one platform may only be possible through a gate that is normally locked. The usual form of mortice lock is not always appropriate for the variety of uses. The RADAR padlock, with it s colour visible hasp and staple, and RADAR rimlock allow access to everyone permitted; whilst eliminating access to gates for undesirable elements. RADAR Padlock, Hasp and Staple The padlock is of traditional old English design colour coated red to indicate that it can be accessed from both sides of the padlock with a RADAR key. RADAR Automatic Disabled Toilet Entry System The Phlexicare automatic door openers provide safe and easy access for all ambulant and wheelchair traffic. The system operates at the turn of an N&C Phlexicare RADAR key in a wall mounted control panel. Wheelchair accessible toilets are normally designed with an outward opening door. To open the door a wheelchair user has to pull the door towards them whilst at the same time propelling themselves backwards. This automatic disabled toilet entry system does not require the user to pull or even touch the door to open it. This obviously means that it provides very easy access along with eliminating the risk of cross infection as the user will be using their own personal N&C Phlexicare RADAR key. The door will unlock and open automatically, once inside, the door will close and at a single touch to the internal touch to lock/open sensor, automatically lock and disconnect the external control panel. This action illuminates red lights on both the external and internal panels indicating that the toilet is occupied. To exit the toilet, simply operate the touch to lock/open sensor, the door will unlock and open automatically at the same time reactivating the external control panel and changing the lights to blue indicating that the toilet is vacant. RADAR Outside Plate The sensors will function without actual touch, work through gloves and are washable, to ensure hygienic door locking. The automatic opener is fitted with software that incorporates safety sensitivity reversing the door should it encounter an obstacle and ensuring user safety. For emergency access, manned locations have a break glass unit and for unmanned locations a fireman s drop switch is provided. The N&C Phlexicare RADAR automatic disabled toilet entry system can be installed on single leaf hinged and sliding doors up to 1200mm wide and 250kg in weight. All electrical work to current standard including testing and certification registered with building control as required by BS6761. This system includes installation using our in-house Engineers. RADAR Automatic Disabled Toilet Entry System P.O.A RADAR Inside Plate RADAR Portable Ramp & Locking Station A lightweight and portable suitcase ramp can be secured in a location i.e. shop entrance, office or hotel lobby, where access is necessary for wheelchair users but a permanent ramp cannot be sited. The locking station prevents unauthorised removal of the ramp but can easily be accessed with a RADAR key. Slip resistant surface with up stands to prevent wheelchair tyres veering off the edge.
