Backup / migration of a Coffalyser.Net database There are two main procedures for backup or migration of your Coffalyser.Net database. One of these procedures makes use of the SQL management studio software and is not explained in this document. Installation and usage of this software for backup or migration of Coffalyser.Net databases is described in another document. Using the SQL management studio is recommended for advanced users who are using SQL database clusters and/or want to perform regular backup of the Coffalyser.Net database. This document describes how to perform a manual backup of a SQL database using no additional software. Coffalyser.Net components In general, Coffalyser.Net uses 3 components to function. First we have the Coffalyser.Net end-user (or client) application, which runs on desktop machines and can connect to any Coffalyser.Net server application, local or remote. The second component is what we call the Coffalyser.Net server application, which communicates with the clients on one side and the database on the other. Lastly we have the database itself, which can run on any version of Microsoft SQL, on any computer in the network. When the Coffalyser.Net needs to run in a large scale environment we commend that you install the database on a high capacity/performance SQL server. Most enterprise environments have a dedicated server for this purpose.

Step 1 Locating and copying the database files Step 1.1 Open computer management Open the computer management console on the machine which is currently hosting the database by right clicking on the My Computer icon and then selecting manage from the context menu.

Step 1.2a Stop active Coffalyser.Net SQL server Expand the Services and Applications node and select services. Locate the Coffalyser.net Server item and stop it by right clicking on it and then selecting stop from the context menu.

Step 1.2b Stop active Coffalyser.Net SQL server (COFFALYSER) Now locate the SQL Server (COFFALYSER) item and stop it by right clicking on it and selecting stop from the context menu. The SQL server should now shut down and release its lock on the database files, after which we can perform normal file operations like copy.

Step 1.3 Copy the database files Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.COFFALYSER\MSSQL\DATA. In this folder you will find two files that contain all the data, the Coffalyser.mdf and Coffalyser_log.ldf file. To make a backup of the data, simply copy these files and placing it on an alternative location. If you only want to make a backup of your data, you are finished and you only need to restart the SQL server as described at step X. If you want to move the database to a different computer then copy these files over the network or use an external hard drive / USB thumb drive.

Step 1.4a Restart active Coffalyser.Net SQL server If you want to continue using the Coffalyser.Net on the computer where you have just made a copy of the database files then you need to restart the Coffalyser.Net server. Open the computer management console on the machine which is currently hosting the database by right clicking on the My Computer icon and then selecting manage from the context menu, as shown at step 1. Expand the Services and Applications node and select services. Locate the Coffalyser.net Server item and start it by right clicking on it and then selecting Start from the context menu.

Step 1.4b Restart active Coffalyser.Net SQL server (COFFALYSER) Now locate the SQL Server (COFFALYSER) item and start it by right clicking on it and then selecting start from the context menu. The SQL server should now restart and the Coffalyser.Net database can again be used on this computer.

Step 2 Restoring the database The next steps are not required if you only want to make a backup of the Coffalyser.Net database, but explain the procedure how you can use the copied database at step 1 and restore it at a different computer without the use of any additional software. Step 2.1 Install Coffalyser.Net First install the last version of Coffalyser.Net on the new Computer. Please use the most recent version of our Coffalyser.Net by downloading it from your MyMLPA account on http://www.mlpa.com. In case you already have a MyMLPA account you can also directly download the file from: http://www.coffalyser.net/downloads/coffalyser.net.zip. During installation you will be asked to create a new database. Follow all the steps as described in the installation manual. When you get to the point that you can create a new database and you can fill in the database name, then give it EXACTLY the same name as the database you have copied from the other computer and complete the installation as you would have done earlier on the computer that is currently hosting the database. Step 2.2 Stop active Coffalyser.Net SQL server Open computer management and stop the Coffalyser.Net SQL server. After completing the installation a new server is running on that computer. You first need to stop this server through computer management as described at steps 1.1 and 1.2. Step 2.3 Replace the database files Open the windows file browser and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.COFFALYSER\MSSQL\DATA. Now copy the old database files and paste them in the location of the SQL server that you have just opened and replace the two database files. Step 2.4 Replace the database files When the files are replaced, and then restart the SQL server, by undoing the previous action in Services and Applications, as described at step 1.4.

Step 2.5 Reconfigure Coffalyser.Net Restart the Coffalyser.Net and start the configuration. Follow the steps of the configuration as described in the installation manual. Pass through all the steps, as also described in the installation manual. After this you should be able to view the data from the old database.
