2 Overview The purpose of the document is to provide instructions on how to properly backup the DSS Databases using Windows Backup. This procedure applies to Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server Operating Systems. This document contains the following sections: ONE TIME BACKUP For creating a single one time backup of the DSS databases DAILY BACKUP For creating a daily backup of the DSS databases RESTORE BACKUP For restoring backups ONE TIME BACKUP The process will take you through creating a single one-time backup of the DSS databases Click Start Programs Systems Tools Backup Ensure the Always Start in Wizard Mode is checked and click Next. 4 Check Backup files and settings and click Next. Check Let me choose what to backup up and click Next. Page 4 of 17

5 Browse to and check the location of the MSSQL Data folder. This is typically located at: o SQL Server C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. o SQL Server C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data Select the data folder and click Next. Under Choose a place to save your backup, click Browse and select a location and filename for the backup file. Click Save to proceed. Page 5 of 17

6 Type a name for the backup and click Next. To set additional backup options or set a backup schedule, click Advanced. After reviewing the settings and click Finish. Page 6 of 17

7 The backup will start and the progress will be shown in the window. When finished, the backup will show complete. Review the information and click Close. To restore the backup, skip to the the Restore Database section below. Page 7 of 17

8 DAILY BACKUP The process will take you through setting up a daily backup of the DSS Databases. Click Start Programs Systems Tools Backup Click Next At the Backup or Restore screen click Next At the What to Backup screen, check the Let me choose what to back up radio button and click Next Page 8 of 17

9 At the Items to Back Up screen, check the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data Click Next At the Backup Type, Destination, and Name screen, click Browse Page 9 of 17

10 Browse to the backup folder Click Save At the Backup Type, Destination, and Name screen, click Next At the Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click Advanced Page 10 of 17

11 At the Type of Backup screen, select daily from the drop down box and click Next At the How to Backup screen, select Verify data after backup and click Next At the Backup Options screen, select Replace the existing backup and click Next Page 11 of 17

12 At the When to Back Up screen, select Later radio button, enter in the Job Name of Daily and click Set Schedule At the Schedule Job screen, select Daily from the Schedule Task dropdown. Set the Start Time and click OK Page 12 of 17

13 At the Set Account Information screen, enter in the credentials of an Administrator account and click OK: At the When to Back Up screen, click Next At the Set Account Information screen, re-enter the Administrator Account Credentials and click OK: Page 13 of 17

14 At the Account Information Warning screen click OK: At the Backup or Restore Wizard screen click Finish : Page 14 of 17

15 RESTORE BACKUP The process will take you through restoring a backup of the DSS Databases. Click Start Programs Systems Tools Backup Ensure the Always Start in Wizard Mode is checked and click Next. At the Backup or Restore screen, select Restore files and settings Click Next Page 15 of 17

16 Click Browse and select the backup file Click OK Check the checkbox for the files that are to be restored Click Next Page 16 of 17

17 Click Finish to restore the file to the original Location or click Advanced to restore to an alternative location. Page 17 of 17
