St Mark s House - Detoxification 1. Introduction The centre provides two services, detoxification from alcohol and residential rehabilitation. This guide refers to detoxification. The centre provides a programme to assist men and women through the withdrawal from alcohol that they might experience when they stop drinking. The programme is designed to help you to stop drinking safely, and to provide support, information and advice regarding further changes you might have to make to remain abstinent. This guide does not attempt to answer every question you may have. So if you require any further information, either before admission, or at any point in your stay, please speak to a member of staff. It is important to note that the majority of referrals and admissions to the centre for detoxification are from within the Leeds Local Authority (LA). If you are from another LA area, then you will need to have funding arrangements agreed from within your own LA area before admission can be arranged. Making a Difference Every Day
2. Facilities St Mark s House has 5 beds dedicated to detoxification, all of which are single rooms. Bath, shower and toilet facilities are shared. Other facilities include: Television lounge, with DVD player Drinks making facilities Reading and games materials Games Room Dining Room The detoxification service shares some of its facilities with the rehabilitation service. Meals are provided 3 times per day, and with a wide range of meals available on the menus, there is something to cater for every need. Special diets can also be catered for. The centre is close to local shops, and is within walking distance of Leeds City Centre. Smoking is not permitted in bedrooms. However, there is a designated smoking area. The service is a Registered Care Home and as such is subject to inspections from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Copies of the inspection are available upon request.
3. Staffing The centre has a staff team of Nursing, Support, Educational, Administration and Domestic staff. A Registered Nurse is on duty at all times. Alcohol Support Workers assist the nursing staff in providing additional support. The service also has students on placement, including Nursing and Social Work students. You can choose not to work with a student. 4. What is the Detoxification Programme About? The programme typically lasts for 7 days. During this period you will be prescribed a reducing regime of medication to help minimise withdrawal symptoms. The visiting doctor will prescribe the medication, and it will be administered by one of the nursing staff. We will assist you in making you feel comfortable during detoxification and help with any questions you may have about your treatment. Vitamin B and Thiamine are also routinely prescribed to assist with the detoxification process. Some clients benefit from an intramuscular injection of vitamins called Pabrinex. In addition to treating withdrawal symptoms, we provide individual and group sessions to help you make informed choices about your drinking. We will also help you in receiving aftercare support from your GP or from a specialist agency. We will also talk to you about accessing our rehabilitation service, or elsewhere, if you require longer-term intensive support. Some clients benefit from post-detoxification medications, such as Disulfiram (otherwise known as Antabuse).
5. Substitute Prescribing As well as alcohol-only dependency issues, we also provide alcohol detoxification for people who have opiate dependency issues and are currently prescribed methadone or other substitute prescriptions. We do not detoxify people from opiates or other drugs. We do not accept people onto our rehabilitation programme whilst they are on substitute prescribing programmes. 6. What Will Happen on the First Day? During your first day you will be shown around the home, allocated a bedroom and introduced to staff and other clients. This will include having safety and fire instructions explained to you. We operate a buddy system where, for the first few days of your admission, you will be paired with another client who will help you settle into the centre. If a nurse has not already seen you, you will have a basic nursing assessment to ensure that any medical treatments you are receiving, or require, during your stay can continue.
7. What Do I Bring & What Don't I Bring? You should bring sufficient clothing and toiletries for your stay. You may wish to bring personal items (photos etc.) to help you with your stay. You can bring a radio with you, but any electrical equipment is subject to a safety inspection. Do not bring a television lounges you can access, and we will encourage you to socialise. Please do not bring items of great value. Do bring current medication with you, and you must hand these into the nursing staff upon admission. Arrangements will be made for these to be administered at medication times. Do Not bring alcohol or drugs into the centre. Your bags will be searched upon admission, and any substances found, with your permission, will be disposed of. Refusal to hand over alcohol or other substances will lead to your discharge. Do Not bring your vehicle to the centre as there is only very limited parking. 8 Finances? For clients from within the Leeds LA area there is no charge for the detoxification programme. Please note that if you are intending to stay for the rehabilitation programme, then this is subject to a Financial Assessment which may result in a personal contribution to your stay in rehab.
9. Can I Have Visitors? Clients are encouraged to maintain contact with family and friends where it doesn't interfere with the programme. Visitors' hours are: Monday to Sunday: 5.30 pm - 9pm Visitors are expected to abide by the same rules of behaviour as clients. This includes no use of alcohol or drugs, or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs when visiting the service. The nature of the detoxification visit should be one of support and encouragement. Where it is found that visitors are not supportive towards the programme, we can refuse admittance. Please note that the facilities are not designed for children, and that great caution should be exercised before considering having children to visit. 10. Will I Be Able To Have Time Out of The Home? For your safety, we request that you do not go outside of the home during the detoxification process. Where possible, we provide accompanied time outside of the home - typically by a volunteer or member of staff. Only under exceptional circumstances would be agree to other time being spent outside of the home.

The Detoxification Programme Medication for withdrawal The medication for withdrawal symptoms is prescribed by the visiting medic. The drug used on most occasions for withdrawal is Chlordiazepoxide (Librium), and is a reducing regime prescription. Vitamin B and Thiamine are also routinely prescribed. Group Work Structured group work is an important part of the detoxification process. The types of sessions that form part of the programme include: Alcohol Awareness, Relaxation Sessions, Anxiety Management, Relapse Prevention, using reflective journals of the progress made in detox, and other social activities. Assessment for rehabilitation We will provide an assessment for our own rehabilitation centre, St Mark's House, if it so required. We will provide information regarding accessing other rehabs if necessary.
Referral to other agencies Assistance will be provided in contacting another agency or place of support regarding your drinking, if not done so already. Discharge Planning We will work with you to plan the most appropriate form of support for after you detoxification. We will write to your GP, referrer and anyone else involved in your care, following discharge to inform them of your stay. Structure The detoxification programme aims to bring structure and stability to your lifestyle. Part of the programme includes creating responsibility for your own welfare and the environment in which you are staying; this includes undertaking some domestic tasks.
11. What if I Use Alcohol or Illicit Drugs During the Programme? The centre operates a strict no alcohol or drugs policy. Clients in the programme are tested daily for alcohol and drug tests can be arranged as necessary. Positive tests for alcohol or illicit substances, or non-compliance with testing procedures, will lead to your discharge from the detoxification programme. 12. Complaints and Compliments If at any time whilst you are resident at the centre, you are not satisfied with the service you have received, then you have the right to raise these concerns. You should raise your concerns with whichever member of staff you feel most comfortable talking to. All concerns will be brought to the attention of the Project Manager. If you are not satisfied by the way the informal complaint was dealt with, or the nature of the complaint is more serious, then St. Anne's has a formal complaints procedure. Please see contacts page for places to contact in the event of a formal complaints procedure (page 11). 13. Data Protection St Anne s Alcohol Services use the ILLY Database data collection system. This system allows St Anne s to produce statistical data relating to the use of the service. Some information, in an anonymous format, is passed to the National Treatment Agency (NTA) through the National Drug Treatment Monitoring Service (NDTMS). The NTA uses information, such as trends in the types of people who use services, the engagement of people in services and the effectiveness of services, to plan, monitor and evaluate services at a local and national level. You have the right to withdraw your consent from your data being shared with the NTA at anytime. Please speak to a member of staff if you have any queries regarding this issue.

14. Confidentiality Policy Users of the service have a right to confidentiality. This means that any personal or private information received from them is known only to the staff who support them. Discussions should take place with the clients, carers and relevant professionals to agree when and what information can be shared. Where possible, the client should give permission for information to be passed on. There may be some circumstances in which it is necessary for information to be passed on to other people without the client s permission. To other professionals who work with the client if it is seen to be in the client s best interest. In order to prevent any risk to and from the client. In any Adult Protection or Child Protection procedures.
