Adult Education in Sweden Adult education in Sweden is extensive and has a long tradition. The first public colleges for adults were introduced in late 1800s. Free and voluntary civic education began with the emergence of popular movements. Correspondence institutions began a comprehensive distance learning. Later came labor market training to combat unemployment and retraining of the Swedish workforce to the modern industrial society.
Municipal adult education was introduced in 1968. It evolved in the 1980s into a separate type of school with its own curriculum. During the 1990s, adult education became labour policy. Since 2006 adult education has followed the development of youth education. Adult education exists in many different forms and is organized by many different operators, from national and municipal adult education, to labour market training.
