PART 1 "Try not to become a man of success but a man of value" Introduction to Making Money Online The internet has so much potential as a genuine tool for business, and for creating massive wealth from anywhere in the world. 1.1 Can anybody make money online? All you need is a computer and an internet connection to make money online! In my opinion anyone with a tiny bit of business acumen and common sense can make money on the internet, while a person with a lot of attitude and business knowledge has an even better chance. The buying attitudes, reasons and motives of customers buying online vs offline are very similar. A lot of business principles can be applied to both, so people who are aware of this are already one step ahead. Having said that, you certainly do not need prior business experience to make it. It's an advantage but not a necessity. Page 1
Rule of 10 This is a principle that I have always applied in my businesses. A sales representative can get 100 prospects gathered at an exhibition. Out of these 100 prospects he might get ten interesting leads, and out of those ten leads one person will buy his product. If he is lucky, the sales rep could get between 2% and 5% of sales out of his 100 prospects. How does this work online? If 100 people click on your ad and one person buys your product, you have a conversion rate of 1%, which is acceptable in Internet Marketing. A realistic conversion rate is between 1% and 5%. Change your shoes If you want to be in business you need to put yourself in your customer s shoes. What would you like to see if you were a potential customer? Look at the world, your product, your sales letter, your ebook, etc as a potential customer. If you visit a website, what would you like to see? Develop the website in that way. Stay in control I must admit, I did try and earn money on the web the lazy way and bought some software that would set up all the sites for me, and host them for me for a monthly fee. That s all I did when I started my internet venture: buy stuff that would promise to make me rich by doing nothing. Boy did I learn the expensive way that this stuff does not work. Once I bought the software the provider would tell me that I needed to host my domains with them or that I was forced to buy my domain names with them. Page 2
In other words, I wasn t in control. That used to annoy me and put me off ever buying from them again. YOU need to be in control of your domain names and your hosting. YOU must decide when you want don t want a domain name any longer. YOU must be able to change content on your site without having to ask permission. YOU must be able to change some keywords if need be. YOU want to decide when and if you are selling your site. Important: Although I strongly emphasize that being in control is important, it is equally important to outsource some of your work. You still need to check the work that your out-sourcers are doing, therefore you will still be in control. 1.2 Internet Terminology Explained I always assume that everybody knows what an ebook is or what affiliate marketing is, but when I start talking to somebody who is not involved with IM, I realise that most people do not understand commonly used internet terms. For this reason I will explain some terminology that I will use a lot in this book. Niche A niche is a small part of a topic or subject. A car market is a niche: that is a niche where all people are interested in cars. Mercedes is a sub niche from the main niche (a niche within a niche), as it is a manufacturer of cars. Page 3
The internet is ideal for finding niche markets. You can join groups, forums, communities, chat sites and social websites and talk about your niche, sub niche or micro niche. In the olden days you would have to go to exhibitions, join clubs, phone people or write thousands of letters in order to find people who love yellow Mercedes. All you need to do these days is Google Yellow Mercedes and it s likely that you will find potential customers. The extra bonus? You can sell to people all over the world. ebook ebook stands for electronic book (also known as digital book). It is called a digital product because it can be downloaded immediately after purchase and there are no shipping costs. It is basically a normal book but published in electronic format. Rather than reading words from a hard copy book, you read them from your computer, laptop or from devices called ebook readers such as Amazon s Kindle. Apple calls its ebooks, ibooks. Affiliate Marketing Remember the days when the guy from the insurance company would come and sit in your kitchen and try to sell you insurance? The older generation reading this will remember. When he sold you some, his boss the insurance company would pay the sales guy say, 10% commission. That is affiliate marketing the old fashioned way. I guess you could also call it commission marketing because that s what it is: somebody gets paid commission for selling somebody else s product. The insurance company is the affiliate merchant, or vendor, and the sales guy is the affiliate as he gets commission from a sale. Now imagine this scenario on the internet: the insurance company has a website that sells insurance. The sales guy has a website that tells you the pros and cons of insurance and here and there on his website he Page 4
puts a link that, when you click on it, you have the chance to buy something. If you buy via that link, the insurance company will pay the sales guy commission. Merchant An online retailer where you can buy products or services. Cookies Affiliate Marketing gets even more interesting because some merchants work with Cookies: 2-days Cookies, 7-days Cookies, 14-days Cookies, sometimes even lifetime Cookies. A Cookie is a text file that contains a form of ID (Identification) and is placed on a computer by a website. I will explain it from an affiliate marketing view. You, as the affiliate, are driving traffic to the merchant s website with your affiliate link. A visitor clicks on your link and so visits the merchant s website. He might not buy anything and leave the site but the merchant has left a cookie on the visitor s computer. If that visitor returns to the site within 7 days of his first visit, you will still receive commission because the merchant has left a 7-day cookie. If the visitor decides to go directly to the merchant to purchase the product, without clicking the link on your website, you will still earn commission because the visitor has your cookie on his or her computer and your affiliate ID is remembered. Once a cookie expires, the memory of your affiliate ID information also expires. If you ever want to clear your cookies, 1. Go to Internet Properties on your computer, click Delete under browsing history and tick Cookies on the next screen. 2. Download a cookie cleaner software, such as CCleaner (free). Page 5
Opt-In Once a visitor has given you their email address, they have opted-in. Opt in email is a term used when someone is given the option to receive "bulk" email, that is, email that is sent to many people at the same time. Typically, this is some sort of mailing list, newsletter, or advertising. Obtaining permission before sending e-mail is critical because without it, the email is Unsolicited Bulk Email, better known as spam. Auto-Responder An auto responder is a software program that automatically sends out emails on a pre-scheduled basis to all opted-in people on your list. Once you have built a list, the idea is that you send them some freebies or send them a newsletter or an affiliate link etc You can t possibly do all this manually each time you receive a new opt-in. An auto-responder does this automatically for you. Let s say you want to create a 5 part email course. You set the intervals for the emails, say once a day. All you need to do is type in the emails once in your auto responder software and your list will get an email once a day. Anyone joining your list will automatically be sent those emails for the next 5 days. Traffic To put it very simply: traffic = visitors = people looking at your site. Always use different traffic techniques because not everybody uses the same method of finding products on the web. Everybody has different knowledge and people use their own knowledge to search for products. If you only focus on getting traffic with Facebook, you are missing out on all the people that do not use Facebook. I will discuss free traffic and paid traffic later in the book. Page 6
Click Through Rate (CTR) An advertisement s CTR is how many people will actually click on your ad if Google shows it 100 times. Usually a realistic CTR is between 1% and 10%. Any more is considered very good in the IM business. CTR is a really simple fraction that looks like this : Number of people who clicked your link (clicks) / Number of people who saw your link (impressions) x 100 = CTR (in %) In Google Analytics and Google Webmaster (explained later) the "Number of people who saw your link" are called "Impressions" and "Number of people who clicked your link" are simply called Clicks". Conversion Rate (CR) CR stands for conversion rate: if 100 people visit your site, how many will actually buy or perform the action required? A realistic conversion rate is between 1% and 5% in case. Higher conversion rates are possible but it depends on what you decide counts as a conversion - filling in email address could be considered a conversion. CR is a straight-forward equation : Number of people who performed an action / Number of people who saw your page x 100 = CR (in %) Knowing your conversion rates means you can test different elements of your site and check the impact it has on your number of sales. People who saw your website and clicked on it = Click Through Rate (CTR) People who saw your website and bought something = Conversion Rate (CR) Page 7
PPC (Pay Per Click Advertising) Pay Per Click is one of the best ways to get traffic to your site. The idea first started with affiliate marketing and it is now a billion dollar industry. It is also known under the following names : Pay Per Placement, Pay Per Performance, Pay Per Ranking, Pay Per Position, Cost Per Click. PPC is an advertising system used on search engines, content websites, blogs, advertising networks. The advertiser you only pays when a user clicks on your ad. Within one hour of launching your ad campaign your site can be seen by thousands of people. When a user types in the keyword matching your keywords, the advertising network will show your ad. This is the best thing about PPC as the traffic you receive from it is targeted. You can sometimes dominate the market with PPC. All administration is done by the PPCnetworks and all you need to do is set up the ad campaign and decide which keywords you want to pay for when people click on your ad. You will also need to decide how much you want to pay per click : the more you bid per click, the more often your ad will show. You can track how many people have visited your site through your ads and track how much your ads are costing you. You can set a daily budget and you can immediately stop your ads from being shown if you are not making any money. Adwords and Adsense Google Adwords is the largest PPC (Pay per Click) network. Google has two different types of network: the search networks (Adwords) and the content networks (Adsense). As a default, Google places your ad on both networks. The search network is the one that you have probably seen often when searching with a keyword. The websites shown in the boxes below have paid for an Adwords campaign. Page 8
1.3 Failure is the First Step to Success Every successful person you meet, hear or read about has failed, without exception (and not just once either). Often the best learning comes from experiencing firsthand what not to do. You cannot follow someone else s path to success exactly; we each have our own personal variation. Don t be afraid to experience things firsthand. Unfortunately many people who fall over, complain loudly to everyone about their bad luck. Worse still they stay put where they ve fallen and don t get up. Imagine if we had done this as children learning to talk, walk or talk where would we be today? Sometimes falling down will hurt. I lost tens of thousands of dollars on my journey to making many more. And I still lose a lot experimenting with new ideas and projects. But that hasn t stopped me. Every successful person has fallen, and every single one has gotten up and continued walking. When you experience failure, pick yourself up, learn from your mistakes and then just keep on going. 3 Secrets to a Successful Mindset 1. Strong Desire If you could give anything to change your financial situation right now, this is good motivation to put your head down and start doing something differently. Do you want to quit your job? Do you want to travel more often? Are you feeling unhappy about how you're living? Think about all the things you hate in your life. Then use this as ammunition to strive for something better. You deserve it! Page 9
2. Own Your Results (good or bad) Part of owning a success mindset is not blaming anyone. Ultimately, you alone are in charge of every success and failure. When something goes wrong in your business, don t externalize the blame on someone else. Take responsibility. When you take responsibility you take back the ability to respond. It is this ability to respond to each situation that will allow you to create the ultimate outcome you are looking for. 3. Be Detached Whether you succeed or fail, it s important you keep a level head. Know that you won t (and can t) win every time. But when you do have a big success, all your work will be worth it. You may put equal time, money and heart into 10 projects. It s hard to know which projects will fall flat and which will fly. What matters is that you consistently go after your goal. Keep going. If a particular project looks promising, run with it. Keep going until there is nothing left that can be done. Too many people give up just before the final breakthrough. If you are 100% certain that there is no future in it, then let it go and move on. Knowing when to quit can also be a good thing. Just remember, your first success is the hardest to get to. Remember to enjoy yourself Make business fun. For me, life is about enjoyment. Whatever you choose, do it because you love it. Yes, if you chase the money you can be financially successful, but you may not be happy. Choose both. Business is just one part of life a part of life that will probably occupy a large percentage of your time. It is because of this that often, the best businesses are the ones that are built by people out of passion. Page 10

Affiliate Marketing An affiliate program is a system that allows other people to sell your product or service on your behalf in return for a commission. 3 reasons how you can benefit from an affiliate program 1.
