Dec-88 Mar-9 Sep-9 Mar- Jun-1 Sep- Dec-3 Mar-5 Jun-6 Sep-7 Dec-8 Sep-1 New Zealand s indicative nominal trade balance for bottled water (FOB/VFD) for the month of October 13 was around NZD1 m, with the annualised trade balance at just above NZD1m. We expect strong continued growth on the back of rising exports to existing key and emerging markets. 1 1 1 8 6 - Bottled Water Trade Balance - Annual FOB/VFD Bottled Water Exports and Imports by Market Year to Date Key export markets remain the US, accounting for close to half of all exports, followed by Australia. Other markets of interest showing most growth potential are: China, UAE and Hong Kong. Other smaller but growing markets include: Bahrain, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Tonga and Thailand. Annualised exports to China have again topped NZD1M for the first time since August 1. Encouragingly, the average value per litre of around NZD1.15/L is also climbing. In association with an appreciation in the NZD against the Chinese Yuan, this suggests China is placing a premium on brand New Zealand. Bottled Water Exports HS1 - China Annual FOB 1,.5 1, 8 6 -. 1.5 1..5. Bottled Water Imports Strongly Correlated to the Economy Bottled water imports are strongly correlated to performance of the domestic economy. Movements in the measure of GDP (gross domestic product), expressed as annual percentage change, tend to lead imports by around five quarters (15 months). Hence, GDP can be viewed as a reasonably reliable leading indicator of demand for higher value imported bottled waters and demand generally from the on-trade sector. 8. 7. 6. 5.. 3.. 1.. -1. -. -3.
