protect your home select the right tree

choose your trees and shrubs carefully Trees and shrubs are a very important part of our built environment where they have great value in providing shade, clean air, wind protection, wildlife habitat and beauty. However, if they are not carefully chosen, they may cause problems below ground. The roots of some trees and shrubs can damage sewer pipes and underground services. Trees and shrubs rely on their roots to find moisture and nutrients. Sewer pipes are an attractive moisture source. A small hairline fracture in a pipe is all a root needs to get in. Then it quickly grows inside the pipe, causing a reduction in flow and eventually a complete blockage. Often complete sections of pipe need to be replaced and this is costly. Homes built in the last 15 years are likely to have PVC sewerage pipes, which are less prone to leakage and therefore tree root damage. locating underground services You can find the location of your sewer pipes by calling the Water Corporation on 13 13 95. Be aware, tree roots may extend beyond your property boundaries. finding the right tree The table overleaf provides a list of most common trees and some shrubs with varying root system sizes. They are grouped according to size and then listed in order of common name. The next column shows the suggested minimum planting distances from any sewer pipe. why not be waterwise as well? This symbol indicates if a tree is waterwise. Waterwise trees, once established in improved soil, will need watering no more than once a week. Many will flourish over our hot and dry summers with even less water than that. Pictures of most of the waterwise trees on this list, along with hundreds of other waterwise plants suitable for Perth gardens can be viewed at www.watercorporation.com.au these lists are for your information only These lists are for your information only and it is up to you to make your own decision over the planting of trees or shrubs on your property. The Corporation is not liable for any inconvenience, damage or loss which is caused by, or results from, the planting of any trees or shrubs on your property or any adjoining property.

don t rubbish your sewers Tree roots aren t the only cause of blockages! Material other than toilet paper entering the system through toilets, sinks, baths and showers can block sewers and cause flooding and major damage. Cooking oils and fats should never be flushed into the systems as they will congeal and eventually block your sewer. The overflow relief gully, which prevents internal flooding in the event of a blockage, should be free of any obstructions such as flower pots. Sewer access chambers in back gardens must also be clear of obstructions to allow the Water Corporation access.
