The National Graduate School of Quality Systems Management (NGS/U) Established in 1993, The National Graduate School (NGS/U) remains the nation s only accredited higher education institution whose programs solely utilize quality systems principles and best practices to achieve tangible, work-related results for the employers and/or sponsoring organizations of students. From its home campus in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, NGS/U provides faculty and instructional expertise in more than three dozen states and around the world from Kosovo to China. NGS/U understands that adults wish to have the option of progressing along a full learning pathway at a single institution that offers degrees from the undergraduate to terminal levels. The institution offers the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Business Administration degrees. All NGS/U programs are offered in accelerated formats that guarantee the availability of required classes, an approach that enables student cohorts to complete their respective degree programs on time. Three main areas of study and degree concentrations are offered: Quality Systems Management; Homeland Security Policy and Practice; and Environmental Quality Policy and Practice. In all programs, students complete a work-related project instead of the conventional thesis or dissertation.
NGS/U students often attend resident programs at either their workplaces or other convenient locations. The institution fully understands the travel and/or deployment requirements of contemporary professionals in corporate and military positions therefore also offers a full menu of virtual and blended learning formats. That commitment to accessibility has resulted in student cohorts comprised of attendees from as many as six different time zones. The National Graduate School also offers stand-alone certificates in Quality Systems Management; Homeland Security; Environmental Quality Policy; Lean Six Sigma; and Project Management. All NGS/U certificates contain courses that can be applied toward the institution s degree programs. Current DBA Student... I have found the outreach of the NGS program to provide an opportunity for one to research a selected topic while at the same time attend classes, conduct readings, and focus on the formal education process. THE NGS/U Doctoral Program Applied Research & Practical Results NGS/U Doctoral programs are designed for adult students in the private, public or military sectors who plan to continue their employment while they simultaneously earn their advanced graduate degree. The programs like the students who attend them have a practical, process improvement orientation. The faculty and mentoring expertise that all include help NGS/U graduates use quality systems principles to achieve tangible, measurable improvements at their workplaces or at sponsoring organizations. As a matter of routine, NGS/U faculty and academic division professionals personally facilitate the selection of the project and project champions. NGS/U offers three doctoral programs: Quality Systems Management (established Spring 2009) Homeland Security Policy & Defense (pending) Environmental Quality Policy and Management (pending) The Dissertation Project NGS/U students come from diverse sectors such as the aerospace and science industries, public service, and the military. Although NGS/U doctoral students represent such varied occupations as engineering, finance, and continuous quality improvement, doctoral students all share a common goal: to implement a dissertation project that proves to be of significant value to an organization, agency or sponsor. The Project must yield tangible, quantifiable results. Doctoral Projects have pre-established performance measures that are significant and highly visible in the value stream of the students sponsoring organization. Typically, Projects yield more than a ten-to-one (10:1+) Return On Investment (ROI) on the student tuition investment. DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) Focus: Applied Research for Practical Results Doctoral programs are offered in varied forms, such as the Ph.D., Ed.D., D.M. et al. NGS chose to offer the DBA because of its focus on applied research. The knowledge gained during doctoral studies is applied for the continuous improvement of an actual situation at a student sponsor or NGS/U-designated organization.
NGS/U doctoral programs are designed to be completed in two years of continuous study. There are twenty, three credit courses. Ten of the courses are completed in residence at a designated site. Ten courses are completed virtually. The program in divided into two general phases: The initial phase is 6 months long and covers the first semester. NGS/U faculty and Academic Division representatives work closely with each student to agree on the platform for the student s dissertation Project and applied research. Project extensions will be granted when necessary. Overview: Accelerated Program Completion 2 Year Completion 20 Courses 60 Credits Whereas traditional programs delay the dissertation process until the end, NGS/U requires its student to begin that work at the beginning to ensure that they receive the assistance necessary to refine and implement a high-quality project. The second phase (approximately 18 months), includes the completion of the other 16 courses and the doctoral dissertation project. NGS/U provides an informal Student Outcomes Learning Assessment throughout enrollment, and a formal assessment every 6 months until graduation. Doctor of Business Administration Quality Systems Management (DBA/QSM) The DBA Degree Programs The degree responds to the call from NGS/U graduates and other experienced practitioners to seek an advanced terminal credential that matches the dynamic growth in Quality Systems knowledge. The program attracts working adults who wish to demonstrably enhance the organizational and operational effectiveness of the institutions with which they are affiliated. Eligible doctoral candidates will possess a Master s degree from an accredited college or university as well as experience in a field that can benefit from the application of Quality Systems Management theory and practice. Doctor of Business Administration Homeland Security & Defense (DBA/HSP) The program prepares leaders and practitioners to develop policies and programs that tangibly improve processes related to homeland security policy and defense. The curricula blends knowledge of contemporary theory with practical applications through thoroughly researched and competently applied doctoral projects. Students will be afforded access to the Homeland Security Digital Library (HSDL), a subject-specific database of three million items. NGS/U faculty will be regularly supported by guest lecturers who have extensive real-world experience in developing and implementing practical HSP policies. Doctor of Business Administration Environmental Policy and Quality Management (DBA/EPQM) This offering is designed to prepare individuals to systematically utilize Quality principles to lead and manage organizations that will improve and preserve our environment. Sustainability is an essential aspect of environmental preservation measures; therefore, a significant element of the degree program will be devoted to that aspect as well. Experts will impart knowledge and guide doctoral candidates through the Program. Their efforts will help students to identify an environment-related problem; conceptualize a project designed to address the specified need; and implement approaches that result in a measurably enhanced outcome.
