MA EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2013-2014 INTRODUCTION The MA Educational Leadership is designed primarily to support the continuing professional development of teachers and other graduates who are working as members of the Children s Workforce or are employed in early childhood settings. One key challenge for schools is to develop different levels of leadership that reflect the roles people adopt and responsibilities held. This qualification is designed for aspiring head teachers, deputies and other senior leaders to reflect on their role in the school and begin to consider and develop their own styles and philosophies of leadership. Page 1

UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER INDUCTION Saturday 14th September 10.00am - 1pm at Riverside Campus will be automatically assigned a log-in which will be your chester\ student number and a default password (usually your date of birth in reverse order eg 25 December 1980 = 19801225). Once you have logged in you will be able to change your password to something more secure. The induction day is designed specifically for students who are new to the MA Education programmes at Chester. You will have opportunities to meet with key academic and support staff, check on your enrolment arrangements and attend briefings which are designed to provide you with the information you need to commence your studies with confidence. Your university log-in also includes an email account. Your email address will be your student number@chester.ac.uk (eg 012345@ chester.ac.uk). You can access your emails from anywhere in the world by logging into Sharepoint. You can also have all your university emails automatically forwarded to your personal email address. Whilst the agenda is quite full, you will have opportunities to chat informally with tutors and fellow students. We aim to make the day welcoming and relaxed but also productive and informative. Sharepoint includes all the usual online resources you would expect from a Virtual Learning Environment: information, documentation, discussion boards, module resources for your studies, immediate access to your assessment results, communication tools, assignment submission and feedback, etc. You will be shown how to use the online facility in the induction session. THE UNIVERSITY ONLINE LEARNING PORTAL The University online learning portal is called Sharepoint. It has been specifically designed by the University and is tailored to meet our particular needs. It is essential that you enrol each year that you are on the course as this will keep your student access open and you will be able to fully utilize all of the resources on offer to you. On enrolment, you Page 2 FEES The fees for the academic year 2013-2014 for Masters level programmes will be 435 per 20 credit module. The full cost for the MA is 3915, the cost for the PG Diploma is 2610 and for the PG Certificate is 1305.

MA EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2013-2014 THE ACADEMIC CREDIT STRUCTURE All MA degrees are made up of 180 credit points known as CAT points (Credit Accumulation Transfer). You can move these between Universities. At the University of Chester these points are accumulated through 20 credit modules. Each module is designed to take one term to complete. This is a typical pattern for a full MA, although you can take up to six years to complete the full programme from the first time you register. Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Year 1 CD7201 Professional Development Review CD7602 Leadership Theory into Practice CD7603 Power, Politics and Policy in Educational Leadership CD7604 Creativity, Innovation and Leadership CD7606 Leading Change in Schools CD7601 Leading in Faith Schools Year 2 CD7605 The Psychology of Leadership CD7607 Leading Governance in Schools CD7603 Power, Politics and Policy in Educational Leadership CD7606 Leading Change in Schools CD7604 Creativity, Innovation and Leadership CD7606 Leading Change in Schools CD7601 Leading in Faith Schools CD7605 The Psychology of Leadership Year 3 CD7208 Dissertation A Postgraduate Certificate comprises 3 modules ( 60 CATs) and usually can be completed in 3 terms. A Postgraduate Diploma comprises 6 modules (120 CATs). The dissertation is ordinarily worth 60 credits. It is an independent, original piece of research, and usually takes around a year to complete. Throughout your dissertation you will be provided with a supervisor from the University within the specialist area that you want to investigate who will support and guide your study. Although you are not required to attend any further teaching sessions during this period, other than meeting with your supervisor, we run dissertation research workshops on the two teaching Saturdays each term. There is no obligation to attend, but we hope that they will provide research students with a peer community, act as a forum to exchange research ideas and raise issues about the course, and offer you the chance of meeting another academic member of staff to help you with your study. The programme integrates professional practice, theories of leadership and school-based enquiry. You will have the opportunity to conduct action research in your own path settings to effect school improvement. It takes as its central premise, the understanding that managing people is perhaps the most important aspect of successful leadership. ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR LEARNING (APL) Applications for accreditation for prior learning can be made in relation to any of the non-core modules on the MA Educational Leadership up to 100 credits. Page 3

UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER APCL To claim credit for prior accredited learning (credit you have already achieved from Chester or any other university)you will need to complete an Accreditation of Certificated Learning (APCL) form and bring a copy of your certificate to The Programme Administrator, Debra Badrock, who will process your application for APCL.. You can transfer 60 credits from a PGCE at Masters level and there is no charge for this. You must provide a copy of your certificate unless you did your PGCE with the University of Chester. 60 credits can be awarded for a PGCE which is at Masters level APEL You may also submit a claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APEL). This may be for work you have accomplished in a professional capacity. This has to be submitted in the same way as an assignment and we provide tuition and guidance. You will complete your APEL claim as part of Professional Development Review which is a compulsory module. APEL for National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) will normally be as follows: Level 1 National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML) - 40 credits Level 2 National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) - 60 credits Level 3 National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) - 100 credits. There is a fee payable for each 20 credits that you bring in. Currently this Is charged at 220 per 20 credits. ASSESSMENT Assessment is at the end of every module and is most commonly an essay, or a research report or a case study. The hand in dates are set at the start of each subsequent module i.e. three times a year. Module One 31 Jan 2014 Module Two 14 May 2014 Module Three Date TBC. September 2015 WHAT IF I NEED TO EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF AN ASSIGNMENT? You can have an extension to a module or defer from it. EXTENSION If, for quite legitimate reasons, you are unable to submit your assignment by the deadline, you can apply for an extension. The form for this is available on Sharepoint in the MA online learning space. Your request must be sent to the Programme Leader (and copied to the module tutor) prior to the deadline, allowing sufficient time for them to respond. We encourage students to try their utmost to meet deadlines as we know from experience that this can lead to other problems with your studies. We keep a record of those applying for extensions and will contact anyone who seems to be continually struggling to meet deadlines. If you require an extension please contact Debra Badrock at d.badrock@chester.ac.uk DEFERRAL Our Assessment Board is in January each year. Our reassessment Board in May. If you cannot submit your work in time for one of these boards you need to Defer your module using the form on the MA Programme space in Sharepoint. If you require an extension please contact Debra Badrock at d.badrock@chester.ac.uk WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO TAKE TIME OUT? Typically it will take 3 years to complete an MA Educational Leadership programme following the delivery pattern highlighted on page 2. However you have up to six years to complete your MA from the start of registration and up to three years to complete a Postgraduate Certificate. If, for any reason you wish to suspend your studies you will need to complete the relevant proforma (again available through Sharepoint) and explain the circumstances. We ask you to indicate when you are likely to recommence your studies which is as much for your benefit as our information. WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL SOMETHING? Your tutor will contact you and discuss additional support with you. You can resubmit any failed work, once more, usually at the next submission date. We recommend a tutorial before any resubmitted work is assessed. Page 4

MA EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2013-2014 ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION All assignments are submitted electronically through an online submission portal attached to each module. The process is similar to adding an attachment to an email. The system automatically logs the date and time you submitted your assignment, sends you a receipt and also notifies the relevant tutor that your assignment is ready for marking. You will be shown exactly how to submit your assignments electronically as part of the induction session. Electronic submission eases the process for you in handing-in your work, as it can be done from anywhere in the world. It also safeguards you and us by providing clear evidence of your submission and providing us with safe storage for your assignment. It also means we can access your work from anywhere in the world, at any time, as can second markers and our external examiners. Term 1 Weekend 1 Friday 27 th September 2013 5-7pm Saturday 28 th September 2013 9.30am-4pm Weekend 2 Friday 1 st November 2013 5-7pm Saturday 2 nd November 2013 9.30am-4pm Term 2 Weekend 1 Friday 31 st January 2014 5-7pm Saturday 1 st February 2014 9.30am-4pm Weekend 2 Friday 28 th February 2014 5-7pm Tutors will usually return your annotated work and feedback electronically which means you should receive feedback promptly. We aim to return work within 4 weeks of submission. Term 3 Saturday 1 st March 2014 9.30am-4pm DISABILITIES AND SPECIFIC NEEDS If you have any disability, Specific Needs or illness that would require assessment through different circumstances, please contact the MA Educational Leadership Programme Leader. UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER RESEARCH AND DISSERTATIONS A dissertation provides you with an opportunity to focus on an aspect of your work which has been selected by you. It enables you to become an expert in that field and, hopefully, contributing something original to the field of education. You will be supported through your studies by a dissertation supervisor who will monitor your progress and provide personalized support through tutorials face to face and online. RULES AND REGULATIONS We appreciate that as you are trying to balance your studies with full time employment and your family commitments, sometimes things do not go according to plan. We are governed by rules and regulations which are designed to make sure the system runs smoothly but also to ensure there is parity of experience for all. All this information is in the Programme Handbook. We have tried to be generous with the deadlines for assignments, giving you plenty of time to prepare and submit your work. If things go wrong for you, please contact any of us via email and we will do our best to find a mutually agreeable solution. Page 8
