Naturalized in 1876. 18 Obituary 22 Racine's Oldest Farmer Dies Near Union Grove 27 Nov 1925 Racine, Racine, Wisconsin, United States Hans Andersen, 98 years old, for 55 years a farmer of Racine county, died at 5 a.m. today at his home on a farm five miles northwest of Union Grove. Mr. Andersen has been in good health until several weeks ago when he contracted bronchitis which resulted in his death. He was born in Denmark Feb. 7, 1927, and came to Racine in 1863. He was married 10 years later. He worked in Racine factories several years before he started farming. Besides his wife Mr. Andersen is survived by four children, Anna of Evanston, Emma, James and Andrew, all residing at home. The funeral will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from his home and at 2 p.m. from the Baptist church in Raymond. 19 Remembrances 23 Albion, Boone, Nebraska, United States August 31, 1953 letter from his granddaughter Anna Nelson Goff to her sister Emma Nelson Schmoldt Dear sister Emma (Nelson Schmoldt) Received your letter this morning. Will thank you for the $1 and stamped envelope. I was glad to do it for you. I am the only daughter of our parents that was married in our correct spelled name. The Dane people spell their name with a 'sen.' Our Father's name was Christian Sandell Nielsen and Mother's name, her maiden name, was Christena Magd(a)lena Andersen, as her Father was born a Dane in Denmark. He was born in the year 1827, Febr 7. Our Mother was born in Denmark 1861 June 24. Came with her parents to Racine at age of 2 years. Her Mother's name was Jenneta Christina. Mother's Father's name was Hansen Jacob Andersen. When we went to school our teacher spelled our name 'Nelson' that is the Swede way they spell their name 'son.' We thought it was the American way to spell our name. Of course we wanted to be called American naturally you see. Mother's Mother died shortly after they moved from Denmark to America. Mother's sister was only 3 weeks old. Grandpa Andersen was unable to support 2 small children. He gave Mother's little sister to an old couple that their own children were grown up. When Mother's sister was nine years of age, this family moved to the state of Michigan. Grandpa paid $60.00 per year for mother care to a Norwegian family their children were all so grown up. Mother loved this old couple.

Individual Report for Hans Anderson Page 6 Event Notes: (cont. for Hans Anderson) (When) she was at the age of 13, Grandpa Andersen married again. Mother came home to her Father and Step Mother as Grandpa always let our Step Grandma have her way in everything. Mother resented to leave this old couple and live with a Step Mother naturally. They started their family, and Mother was put to work to care for their babies. Her work was hard and she never liked her Step Mother, as the old people she lived with was so good to Mother and loved Mother as their own. She was babied by these people and Mother did not like the change in her life. Mother's own Mother was a Lutheran in faith. Step Mother (was) a Baptist. Mother did not like the Baptist people so then Mother went to the Methodist church and then is when she changed her name herself to Jane Anderson, for she wanted to be American and did not like to be laughed at. Her name was not changed by law. Just she herself changed it. Mother never liked her real name. Mother's little sister's name was Lora Andersen. Those people later moved to Florida. Mother's sister was raised as their own. That was how Mother lost her own dear sister. No wonder Mother had many sorrows in her life here on earth. She died a good Christian and is today in heaven. God bless her. I think I knew Mother's inner feeling better than any of her children. Poor Mother was an orphan. Our Father... in 1888 April 25 he married our Mother. Our brother 1 year older then me died at birth. Mother was 25 (27) years past when she married Papa.... Will you let Cora read this letter as Elaine is trying to write up our family tree. Your loving sister Anna (Nelson Goff) To you and Cora. Please write again soon. Father: Anders Danielson (1793-1827) Mother: Maren Andersdatter ( - ) Spouse: *Jenneta Christina (1839 - Abt 1863) 4 Marr. Date: Place: Children: 1 Christena (Jane) Magdalena Anderson (1861-1944) 2 Lora Anderson (1863- ) Other Spouse: Sophia Mortensen (11 Aug 1847-17 Nov 1941) 24 Marr. Date: 21 May 1873 Place: Racine, Racine, Wisconsin, United States 25 Children: 1 Anna Christine Anderson (1874-1963) 2 Mary L. Anderson (1876-1904) 3 Emma J. Anderson (1878-1960) 4 James C. Anderson (1880-1937) 5 Andrew A. Anderson (1882-1974) Marriage Notes (Sophia Mortensen) Hans listed his parents as Anders Pedersen and Magdalene Pedersen. The minister who married them was Lars Pedersen. (Perhaps the ministered errored since Hans parents listed on his birth and baptism record were Anders Danielsen and Maren Andersdatter.) Sophia listed her parents as Jens Nielsen and Maren Christensen.
