Food Safety FOOD SAFETY Safety Test Spotlight Pesticides The presence of pesticides in food is a growing concern for consumers. Showing that products or ingredients are pesticide-free can be important to the success of products and in some cases may even be a regulatory requirement. At Medallion, pesticides are extracted from the sample using the QuEChERs extraction method. The cleaned extracts are analyzed by one of the following techniques: Capillary Gas Chromatography Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) Capillary Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GCMSMS) We offer three distinct screens for pesticide analysis. The Basic Screen, which has a domestic focus, currently screens for over 330 compounds. The Expanded Screen, with an international focus, currently screens for over 475 compounds and includes all the compounds on the Basic Screen. And, an Organic Screen, which focuses on the compounds that are of concern to our Organic Clients and currently screens for over 180 compounds. We are continually adding more compounds to all three of our screens so please call us if you do not see a specific compound listed on our website. All three screens can be applied to the following matrices Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMSMS) Identification, verification, and quantification are performed using either one or more of these technologies. Sample extracts are compared against a matrix matched standard. Internal and quality control isotopic standards are analyzed with each sample to ensure quality results. Baking Mixes, Beans, Cereals, Doughs, Fruit/ Vegetable Juices, Fruits, Grains, Oils (Canola, Coconut, Corn, Cottonseed, Palm, Peanut, Rice Bran, Soybean, Vegetable) Pasta/Semolina, Pastries, Popcorn (no butter), Soups, Sugar/Corn Syrup, Vegetables, Water For matrices not on this list, we offer a Partner Screen. This screen is subcontracted to a partner lab that has been qualified and validated by Medallion Labs. Dietary Fiber DIETARY FIBER Proven Leadership Fiber Testing The term dietary fiber was coined in 1953 as a broader definition than the crude fiber of animal nutrition, and a shorthand term for the constituents of the plant cell wall carbohydrates and associated components. In 1976, the dietary fiber definition was broadened to include all indigestible dietary polysaccharides in addition to the other fiber components. Dietary fiber consists of both soluble and insoluble forms. The traditional methods for determining total dietary fiber quantitate most of the dietary fiber in foods; however, as additional sources of dietary fiber were studied, additional specialized methods were adopted. As the science has evolved and more specialty fibers are being used, the need for an updated method for total dietary fiber to include all components is readily apparent. Therefore, two new methods designed to match the Codex Alimentarius Definition of Fiber were recently approved by AOAC International: AOAC 2011.25 Insoluble, Soluble, and Total Dietary Fiber (CODEX Definition) in Foods by Enzymatic-Gravimetric-Liquid Chromatography ; and AOAC 2009.01, Total Dietary Fiber (CODEX Definition) by Enzymatic-Gravimetric Method and Liquid Chromatography. The new methods are coauthored by Medallion s Senior Technical Manager Dr. Jon DeVries. The primary differences between the two new CODEX methods and the traditional method, AOAC 991.43 include: 1) CODEX fiber methods use an enzyme digest protocol more consistent with the human digestive system; and 2) CODEX fiber methods utilizes liquid chromatography to quantify low-molecular weight, ethanol soluble dietary fibers (resistant oligosaccharides). (AOAC method 2011.25) Testing Options Medallion has been a leader in Fiber testing since we opened for business over 35 years ago. Not only do we provide superior testing capabilities to our customers and assist with interpretation of results, but we have consistently been involved with developing and validating the necessary, state of the art, methods for testing. Our early and continued involvement with method development assures our customers that the appropriate and relevant assays will be applied to their samples. It further assures that we are in a position to help our customers select the appropriate method or methods and, if necessary, provide assistance in understanding the testing outcome. Use the following guidelines when assembling your product for testing at Medallion Labs: STEP 1 STEP 2 Collect a sample which is well blended and homogenous. Include specific grinding, handling or composite instructions with the order. Include sample matrix/composition descriptions and estimates on the submittal form. If you have a question regarding appropriate sample size, please contact Medallion Customer Service at 1-800-245-5615 for guidance Please Note: Medallion Labs cannot accept unidentified samples Shipping Product Samples To insure the integrity and security of samples sent to Medallion, we ask that our customers observe the following guidelines when shipping samples: Secure each food sample in its own container. Seal each sample package completely so that no leakage will occur. This is very important to prevent cross-contamination. Use packing materials that are strong enough to travel without damage or leakage. Samples needing refrigeration should be shipped appropriately. Please mark refrigerate on the outside of the package to ensure continuous refrigeration. Label each sample individually with the identification you would like included on the final report. CAUTION: Do not use magic marker for labeling pesticide residue samples. This will contaminate the matrix. Enclose the appropriate Medallion Labs Submission Form with sample identifiers and matrices, purchase order, and analyses you would like performed on each sample. If you would like your samples or shipping coolers sent back to you, please provide your UPS or FedEx shipping number, or include a postage paid return label with your product. Additional fees may apply for sample return or for special disposal. Sample Privacy At Medallion Labs, customer privacy is of utmost importance to us because it is important to YOU. Since our start in 1974, we have provided full confidentially to all of our partners. Not only do we have the right systems in place, but we also have the right people. The Client agrees it will not use Medallion s name or data (or the name or data of any General Mills entity) in any manner which might cause harm to Medallion s (or General Mills ) reputation and/ or business. Under no circumstances is the name of Medallion (or of any of its General Mills affiliates) to be published, either alone or in association with that of any other party, without prior written approval. PAYMENT TERMS: Payment terms are Net 30 days. Prices are subject to change without notice. BILLING: All fees or bills are charged directly to the Client, unless a third party has been authorized via a signed statement indicating payment responsibility. It is assumed that the paperwork submitted with a sample describes the testing desired. If changes are made after the originally requested testing is initiated or completed, the Client must accept payment responsibility. Please notify Medallion immediately if changes in testing are necessary. SAMPLE SUBMISSION: Samples should be collected, prepared and shipped according to proper procedures and accompanied by a Medallion request form for the desired analysis. Sample preparation, collection, and shipping instructions, and Medallion request forms are available online at www.medallionlabs.com. Please include all information requested on the form, and use the newest forms as available on the Medallion website to avoid processing delays. Samples will typically be held for two (2) months, except: (1) where samples have been utilized for testing and thereby consumed; (2) where micro samples are destroyed; (3) where suspect samples are autoclaved; (4) where samples are returned early at the request of the Client; (5) where storage will compromise the integrity of the sample; or (6) where circumstances exist that prevent samples from being held for the typical two (2) month time period. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND PATHOGENS: Any sample containing or suspected to contain a pathogen or substance that is considered hazardous must be clearly identified as such on the container and communicated to Medallion before shipping. Medallion reserves the right to refuse any sample that may pose a risk to employees. Return or destruction of such samples is at Client s expense. ANALYSIS: Medallion strives to complete all analyses within the turnaround times specified on our website. Medallion also makes every attempt to deliver rush turnaround in a compressed time, which is also specified on our website. In most cases, rush turnaround is five working days unless the test itself requires a longer time for completion. Rush analysis is offered contingent upon pre-notification and approval of Medallion. However, a rush fee of 100% surcharge of the list fee will be added to the invoice for each analysis completed in five or fewer working days (or when the test itself requires substantial time for completion, a compressed timeline agreed upon in advance) at the request of the Client. Medallion reserves the right to outsource an analysis entirely at Medallion s expense and without prior notification to Client, unless Client requests otherwise. Reported results relate only to the items tested and test reports shall not be reproduced except in full. RETEST ANALYSES: Retests performed at the Client s request may be charged to the Client if the retest confirms the original results. In the event the retest results significantly differ from the original result, the Client will not be charged for the duplicate assay. LITIGATION: All costs associated with litigation or dispute, including compliance for all document subpoena, for oral or written testimony or preparation of same, or for any other purpose related to work provided by Medallion in connection with analyses/reports performed/completed for the Client, shall be paid by the Client. Such costs include, but are not limited to, hourly charges, travel, accommodations, mileage, counsel, and all other expenses associated with said litigation or dispute. WARRANTY AND LIMITS OF LIABILITY: Medallion warrants that all services will be performed in a timely manner by competent personnel. THE FOREGOING EXPRESS WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND IS GIVEN IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. WE DISCLAIM ANY OTHER WARRANTIES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING A WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY. Any services performed by Medallion under proper technical direction by Client, which are determined by Client to have been performed improperly in light of the above warranty, and which after investigation by Medallion are acknowledged in writing by Medallion s Managing Director to have been performed improperly, shall be corrected by Medallion without charge to Client, provided that Client provides Medallion with a written request for such correction within two (2) months after Client knew or should reasonably have known of the problem. (collectively, General Mills )) be liable for any indirect, consequential, incidental, punitive, or special damages or for acts of negligence that are unintentional in nature, including, without limitation, damages for lost profit, business interruption, or other pecuniary loss, regardless of whether Medallion has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
