Investing in a Confusing World The recent increase in market volatility has led to the investing public being uneasy about their investments and the future of the US and global economies. Fear has further been stoked by a media that increasingly becomes more sensationalistic in its description of the financial events reported upon. That fear causes individuals to make emotional investment decisions which are generally not in their best interest. If you are an investor, it may be time to reflect upon the fundamentals of investing rather than relying on the whims of so-called media experts those fundamentals are: 1. Time in the market provides the best opportunity for success, not timing the market. Timing the market has never been accomplished with any consistency. 2. Asset Allocation the importance of spreading your risk amongst many types of investments vs. having all of you eggs in one basket. 3. Dollar Cost Averaging buying consistently into the market spreads your average cost out over time. 4. Rebalancing your portfolio allows you to keep from having too much of your portfolio become concentrated in one type of asset. Being diligent on following your plan and the fundamentals of investing increase your opportunity for long term investment success. Remember, panic is not an investment strategy. If you would like to have a conversation about your investments and the markets, please contact our Cetera Advisor Networks Financial Advisors located at Hermantown Federal Credit Union. Neill Atkins can be reached at our Hermantown location or by calling 218-740-2284. Neill A. Atkins Asset Allocation, which is driven by complex mathematical models, should not be confused with the much simpler concept of diversification. Asset Allocation cannot eliminate the risk of fluctuating prices and uncertain returns. Rebalancing may be a taxable event, before taking any specific action be sure to consult with your tax professional. Dollar Cost Averaging does not assure a profit and does not protect against loss in a declining market. Such a plan involves continuous investment securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. Investors should consider their financial ability to continue their purchases through periods of falling prices, when the value of their investments may be declining.
