HOW MUCH WILL MY DEGREE COST? Domestic student tuition fees Most domestic postgraduate coursework and non-award students at ANU are required to pay domestic tuition fees. The amount of tuition fees a student must pay is determined based on the courses in which that student enrols. Each course has a set fee and the total fees for all enrolled courses in a semester or session are totalled and invoiced. Domestic students who meet the citizenship and residency requirements below may defer the payment of part or all of their tuition fees using FEE-HELP. This is where the Australian Government pays your tuition fees on your behalf and you pay the amount back through the taxation system or voluntary repayments. To be eligible for FEE-HELP students must be: > > an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia for the duration of your enrolment), or > > a permanent visa holder who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be resident in Australia for the duration of enrolment. Some postgraduate programs offer Commonwealth supported places where tuition fees are subsidised by the Australian government, but most do not. Your offer of admission will stipulate if you have a Commonwealth supported place. The majority of domestic postgraduate coursework students are required to pay domestic tuition fees which is the unsubsidised full-fee amount. ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS On-campus accommodation More ANU students live on campus than any other university in Australia, fostering a supportive and engaging student community. Postgraduate students are able to apply for on-campus accommodation at: > > Bruce Hall Packard Wing > > Burgmann College Postgraduate Village > > Davey Lodge > > Fenner Hall > > Graduate House > > Kinloch Lodge > > Lena Karmel Lodge > > Toad Hall > > Ursula Hall Laurus Wing > > Warrumbul Lodge The availability of on-campus accommodation cannot be guaranteed and student residences are not suitable for children, meaning there may be need to investigate off-campus (external) accommodation options in a rental property or share accommodation. We advise you to arrive in Canberra early to investigate external accommodation options. It is difficult to find shared accommodation unless you are on the ground in Canberra. A registered real estate agent is part of the ANU accommodation team, and students can book in for an appointment if they require advice. > > anu.edu.au/study/accommodation Private rental Finding a property If you are considering taking out a lease on a property yourself, the movement of students through the University semester means that the time of highest turnover of rental properties in Canberra is during the December/January summer break. When rental properties become available they are advertised by real estate agents and private listing, this is often done online: > > allhomes.com.au > > domain.com.au > > gumtree.com.au > > realestate.com.au Housing online A free service to help ANU students find rental accommodation: > > anu.edu.au/study/accommodation/housing-online ANU apartments Provides a range of accommodation for visits and new arrivals, ranging from short stay to rental accommodation; they also cater to postgraduates with families. > > anuapartments.anu.edu.au Applying for a lease There will either be a specified day and time for viewing the property, or you can organise a specific time with the agent. If you like the property you can fill out an application form. The application form will ask about your financial situation and will also ask for referees. These are people who can verify that you are trustworthy, such as a previous employer or previous agent. Given the time differences between Australia and the rest of the world, attaching written references to your application will make the process easier. Often there are several applications for any property, meaning the agent will choose the application that is the least amount of work for them. The agent will let you know within a day or two if you have been successful. Setting up your home Leases are usually signed for a period of six or twelve months. It is the responsibility of the tenant to organise for the telephone, electricity and gas to be connected to the home. Tenants also pay for water usage, but this will be organised through the real estate agent or the property owner. Some of the set-up costs you can expect in private rental are: > > Bond this is usually four weeks rent and is held by the ACT Office of Rental Bonds. If the property is maintained in good condition the bond is returned in full at the end of the lease. > > Rent in advance usually this will be two weeks rent, but if rent payment is monthly it can be four weeks rent. > > Utility connection fees (e.g. gas, electricity, telephone and internet). > > Household contents insurance this is optional however highly recommended. > > Removal expenses. > > Furniture and household goods Canberra has multiple shopping areas catering for home items. Second-hand furniture and household goods are advertised online: ANU billboard: billboard.anu.edu.au/classifieds.asp Gumtree: gumtree.com.au The Freecycle Network: freecycle.org If there is any dispute with the real estate agent or owner of the property, the Tenants Union ACT can help with advice and advocacy: > > tenantsact.org.au Approximate travelling times from ANU Car Bus Bike Inner North 5 mins 10 mins 15 mins Inner South 10 mins 15 mins 15 mins Belconnen 15 mins 25 mins 40 mins Woden Valley 15 mins 25 mins 40 mins Tuggeranong 20 mins 35 mins 60 mins Gungahlin 25 mins 50 mins 80 mins 62 The Australian National University

Parliament House Top 5 reasons to study in Canberra Canberra is Australia s university town A 2014 report found Canberra has the highest percentage of its population studying full-time or part-time, compared to any other city in Australia. Combined with the fact that one in nine of our residents work or study at a university in the ACT, we truly are Australia s university town. We re the best city in the world to live in We ve thought so for a long time, but now its official: the OECD rated Canberra the best city in the world for wellbeing in 2014, meaning our residents have the highest quality of life across income, jobs, health, access to services, environment, education, safety, civic engagement and housing. For students, we rank in the Top 21 university cities in the world according to the QS student city rankings. Best of both worlds: well-designed city with immense opportunities As a capital city, Canberra is a custodian of Australia s national story and collective spirit. We show these through regular events during the year: Enlighten, Skyfire, the National Multicultural Festival, and Floriade to name a few, along with a regular schedule of gallery exhibitions, concerts and food festivals. This is balanced against our wide, open spaces, parks and nature reserves and our location as the gateway to the region of mountains, snow and sand. We re a city of four seasons and we invite you to come and explore. A strong sense of community A city of just over 380,000 people with more than 25 per cent of our residents born overseas, countless embassies and national institutes, Canberra has a strong sense of community: our global community. Commute? What commute! With so many students living on campus, most enjoy very little commute time travelling to study or work. For those who live off-campus, Canberra offers the smallest commute times in Australia, extensive bike paths all over the city, and international students are offered the same discounts as local students on public transport. 66 The Australian National University
