WI C update: NOC tools, interworking/interfacing issues & automation The goal of this work item is to investigate what tools are used and how they have been integrated into the NOC environment, focusing on the research and education community.

1st TF-NOC meeting: September 2-3,2010, Barcelona, Spain According to the terms of reference, 6 institutions wanted to work on tools: CESCA DANTE GRNET IUCC PIONIER CARNet Action points from the 1st TF-NOC meeting: ACTION 4 on all (TF-NOC): to think about 5 questions that you want to know about other NOCs and send them to Stefan (NORDUnet). ACTION 5 on all (TF-NOC): to think about how to introduce their NOC and send 5 important bullet points to Stefan (NORDUnet). ACTION 7 on all (TF-NOC): to introduce their NOC according to the given template on the January/February TF-NOC meeting.

NOC tools: initial topics & reports 1. Survey of tools 2. Monitoring tools 3. Reporting and statistics tools 4. Performance management 5. Ticketing systems 6. Knowledge management 7. Tool development

2nd TF-NOC meeting: February 15-16, 2011, Ljubljana, Slovenia According to The answers for Action points 4 & 5 The flash talks The interest during the workshop almost everybody was interested on tools! We also noticed everybody wanted to LEARN. We began to build the survey in small groups and decided to make a list of functionalities with a short definition for each one in order to know the tools that we use for each functionality and not just a list of tools. Action point from the 2nd TF-NOC meeting: ACTION 20 on CESCA: to come up with an updated structure of the questionnaire section dedicated to NOC tools by the TNC meeting.

TF-NOC discussion at TNC2011: May 15, 2011, Prague, Czech Republic The meeting was dedicated to the preparation of the tools part of the survey. It was agreed: Not to introduce ratings for specific tools at this phase of the survey. Only textual review/comments should be asked for now and introduce ratings later when we have common understanding on a closed toolset preferred by the majority of the TF-NOC participants. There was an open discussion about the functionalities and we made a proposed list.

3rd TF-NOC meeting: June 28-29, 2011, Zurich, Switzerland We went through all the proposed questions for the survey and simplified its structure trying to make: An easy-to-fill survey focused on NOC tools and their functions Open enough to let us comment our practical experiences with those tools Only taxonomy questions that were relevant from the NOC tool assessment point of view. The draft version of the survey was distributed among the meeting participants as well as on the TF-NOC mailing list for final comments. Action points from the 3rd TF-NOC meeting: ACTION 23 on TERENA to incorporate the final comments, finalise and launch the TF-NOC survey by 11 July 2011. ACTION 24 on TERENA to investigate if there is a sufficient interest in organising a one-day open source NOC tool workshop in conjunction with the next coming TF-NOC meeting.

Once we have results of the survey, we can dig deeper into each tool, making a second questionnaire, more focused on the tools, with ratings, suitability, missing information
