FLAGSHIP PROJECTS NEW WATERVAL LANDFILL FACILITY The Rustenburg Local Municipality is developing a Waste Disposal Facility to serve the Rustenburg area. The site was chosen after an extensive site selection process by Golder that reviewed the suitability of nine potential sites in the area. A full scoping and environmental impact assessment process was undertaken by Golder, including public participation. The proposed facility will comprise a landfill site for disposal of general waste, waste recovery, gas recovery and composting facilities, with capacity for approximately 25 to 35 years. The facility has been designed by Golder engineers as a state-of-theart facility and will include a training facility and planned recreational spaces in the buffer zone for the community. WASTE-TO-ENERGY PROJECTS Golder was commissioned by the Gauteng Growth Development Agency to undertake an alternative waste-to-energy project by assessing municipal and other waste characteristics in the Gauteng province and the potential for recycling and wasteto-energy conversion. Following this project a feasibility study was undertaken for mass burn moving grate waste-to-energy incineration in Gauteng. Golder was approached by a wellknown South African financier raising equity for an energy specialist company in landfill gas-to-energy electrical power generation schemes at a number of potential landfill sites across South Africa. The financier appointed Golder to the role of Lender s Technical Advisor to conduct a technical and environmental due diligence of the proposed project at nine landfill sites in South Africa and monitoring progress of them once operational. Golder has recently been commissioned by the National Empowerment Fund for an independent company to do a feasibility study on the use of biomass and municipal solid waste to produce fuel, heat and power using gasification technology in South Africa.
HAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE FACILITY KINGSTON VALE HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILL SITE A steel products producer in Emfuleni uses mainly scrap metals as its source of raw materials. In the process, a variety of hazardous and general waste streams are produced which require suitable management in an environmentally acceptable manner. On the strength of a previous pre-feasibility report, the company decided to purchase a site for the development of a material, recovery, storage, transfer and disposal (MRSTD) facility. Golder was appointed to design and permit the hazardous waste storage facility. Golder also assessed the potential impact of the proposed facility on the local groundwater environment. The Kingston Vale hazardous residue management facility, located in Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province, was constructed on behalf of a consortium comprising the Manganese Metal Company, Samancor and BHP Billiton. The required site was to have a 1.6 million ton capacity as well as a 20 year life for industrial mono waste landfill. The project spanned a five year period from 2000 to 2005 and cost in the region of ZAR60 million or US$8 million. Golder was appointed to handle the design, permitting and construction supervision of the hazardous waste landfill site specifically housing filtered manganese residue. In addition, Golder was tasked with the development of operational manuals, as well as the environmental monitoring protocols that underpin the commissioning and operations of the facility. WASTE CLASSIFICATION Golder has extensive experience in waste classification according to the minimum requirements, as well as the SANS 10234 system. Downstream use of waste streams has become an attractive waste management option for many industries. Golder has conducted several such assessments in the recent past for clients, including EVRAZ Highveld Steel and Vanadium and ASA Metals.
