3 Integrated Water Resource Management in the Context of South African Legislation (CEM-02.5) The objective of the course is to: train environmental managers and professionals in the fundamental principles of water and related legislation in South Africa; and Provide them with practical guidance on the implementation of current water and related legislation at the workplace in order to facilitate responsible water management. Date: September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) An Introduction to the Legal Framework for Contaminated Land: Chapter 8 of the National Environmental Management Waste Act (CEM ) The aim of this course is to introduce delegates to the legislative provision pertaining to the management and remediation of contaminated land as predominantly regulated by Chapter 4 part 8 of the National Environmental Waste Act 59 of Date: To be presented again in 2017 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Gaining critical insight into recent waste law - Towards implementation and compliance (CEM ) The control of the potential impacts of waste is a regulatory requirement, since society and the environment must be protected from pollution. Since all sectors of society, from households to large industries and mines, generate waste, the legislation controlling waste consists of a myriad of laws and regulations, a fact which potentially creates a minefield for the responsible environmental manager. Over the past 18 months, South Africa has experienced several amendments to its national waste management legislation, from the promulgation of the National Environmental Management Waste Amendment Act to the enforcement of norms and standards to control activities related to the waste management life cycle. This course focuses on introducing delegates to the changes that have been made to the legal environment, as well as the practical implications thereof for the different role-players in the waste management life cycle. Date: August 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Planning Law and the Interface with South African Environmental Legislation (CEM-02.9) The aim of this course is to provide students wanting to enter the Planning Law field, or those currently employed within or involved in the field of Planning Law with an introduction to and a better understanding of the statutes, laws and regulations regulating land-use planning in South Africa, and how these interface with the South African environmental legal framework. The course will also highlight the potential challenges faced by planning specialists within the planning and environmental legal framework, The focus of the course is to empower prospective and current planners, planning specialist and parties involved in land-use planning to better understand and perform their functions within the legal framework regulating the profession and land-use planning activities and to have a lucid understanding of how their activities are influenced by South Africa s environmental legislation. 4 Conservation Law: South African Legislation and Policy Governing Biodiversity Conservation (CEM-02.10) The aim of this course is to provide students wanting to enter the Biodiversity Conservation field, or those currently employed or engaged within Biodiversity Conservation with an introduction to and a better understanding of the statutes, laws and regulations regulating biodiversity conservation in South Africa, whilst also highlighting the potential challenges faced by conservation specialists within this legal framework. The focus of the course is to empower prospective and current Biodiversity Conservationists as well as individuals confronted with biodiversity-related issues with a better understanding of the relevant legal framework so that they may perform their functions in compliance with that framework. The course will also focus on the legal tools and processes available to the biodiversity conservationist in fulfilling his or her duties, whilst giving a practical understanding of the concepts and challenges faced in the conservation field. Date: August 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Environmental Mining Law: The Legal Framework Governing Environmental Management in South African Mining Operations (CEM-02.11) The aim of this course is to provide students wanting to enter the field of environmental management in the mining sector, or those currently employed within the mining sector, with an introduction to and a better understanding of the statutes, laws and regulations regulating environmental issues within the mining context in South Africa. The course will also highlight the potential challenges faced by the mining sector within this legal framework. The focus of the course is on empowering prospective and current environmental managers with a better understanding of the relevant legal framework that they may perform their functions within that framework, and also on the legal tools and processes available to the environmental manager in fulfilling his or her duties. The course will lead to a practical understanding of the concepts and challenges faced in the mining field throughout the entire lifecycle of a mine, from its exploration, establishment and operation to its de-commissioning and closure. 5 Environmental Management System ISO Audit: A Lead Auditor Course Based on ISO and ISO (SAATCA Registered) (CEM ) Prerequisites: Environmental Law (CEM-02.1) and EMS (CEM-03.1) Courses This course is designed to train lead environmental auditors to conduct audits against ISO and SAATCA requirements in accordance with the guidelines outlined in ISO Furthermore, the course introduces both the EMS certification audit requirements and the competence requirements for EMS certification auditors set out in ISO/IEC and ISO/IEC TS Date: 31 October 4 November 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Occupational Health and Safety Management System OHSAS Audit: A Lead Auditor Course based on ISO and ISO (SAATCA Registered) (CEM ) Prerequisites: OHSAS (CEM ) and OHS Law (CEM a) Courses This course is designed to train lead Occupational Health and Safety auditors to conduct audits for both OHSAS certification and international purposes in conformity with SAATCA and IPC requirements. Date: 31 October 4 November 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Integrated SHEms Audit: Internal Auditor Course based on ISO (Including Practical Module) (CEM ) Prerequisites: EMS (CEM-03.1) and Environmental Law (CEM-02.1) or OHSAS (CEM ) and OHS Law (CEM a) Courses This course aims to train Internal SHEms auditors. Date: September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Energy Management System ISO Audit: A Lead Auditor Course based on ISO 19011, ISO and ISO (CEM ) Prerequisites: Implementing an Energy Management System based on ISO 50001: 2014 (CEM ) or a similar programme; AND Energy Law for Energy Managers (CEM ) or a similar programme. Demonstration of competence acquired in the work place shall be by a detailed formal declaration by a line manager attesting to the competence acquired. 6 Environmental Impact Assessment: A Practical Approach (CEM-05.1) This course is aimed at equipping students with an understanding of the EIA regulations and the processes involved in applying for an environmental authorisation. The main objective of the course is to ensure that students understand the value of the EIA process in providing a reliable basis for sound decision making by meeting legal and other requirements. The course provides guidance to environmental managers of organisations involved in development, consultants involved in doing EIAs, and government officials that have to deal with and approve such assessments to: Know which process to adopt for which proposal; Manage the two EIA processes from inception to end; Steer the process within the timeframes and financial constraints and avoid unnecessary work; Meet the legal demands; and Contribute to timely and efficient decision making. Date: October 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Post-decision Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement: An Introduction to the Role and Responsibilities of an Environmental Control Officer (CEM ) The aim of this course is to provide students wanting to enter the ECO field, or those currently employed as ECOs, with an introduction to and a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the ECO (whilst also highlighting the potential challenges faced by ECOs in the construction environment). The focus of the course is to empower prospective and current ECOs to better understand and perform the functions of an ECO by focusing on the role of the ECO, as well as the key legal requirements applicable to the ECO. The course will also focus on the tools and processes available to the ECO in fulfilling his or her duties, whilst giving a practical understanding of the concepts and challenges faced by the ECO. Date: 29 August 2 September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Environmental Risk Assessment and Management based on ISO (CEM-05.2) This course focuses on transferring skills to conduct environmental risk assessments and to generate environmental risk management plans in conformity with ISO 31000:2009. Date: July 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Social and Heritage Impact Assessment (CEM-05.3) The aim of the course is to empower officials, officers and managers who will be involved in managing the Social Impact Assessment and Heritage Impact Assessment processes by referring to the applicable legislation and case studies. It is focused on providing a general technical background to allow officials, officers and managers to successfully engage with technical specialists and officials regarding the completion of these assessments. The course focuses on the identification, assessment and management process regarding Social Impact Assessments (SIAs) and Heritage Impact Assessments (HIAs). The practicality and potential fields of conflict created will be further highlighted by examples of studies and projects that delegates bring to the table. 7 Handling, Storage and Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances (CEM a) The aim of the course is to sensitise operating and management personnel to: The impact on the environment caused by articles and substances which are capable of posing a significant risk to health, safety and property when handled, stored or transported; and Comply with the international specifications and criteria for such goods. Date: 7-11 November 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Introduction to Integrated Waste Management for Environmental Managers (CEM ) The aim of the course is to provide delegates with a basic understanding of the integrated waste management principles and hierarchy, integrated waste management planning, industrial waste classification, waste transportation, waste disposal site selection, evaluation and permitting, and the operation, monitoring and auditing of the site The course focuses on new trends in land-based waste disposal, including waste management, best practice in sustainable land filling, as well as recycling and alternative technologies. The course enhances the delegate s capacity to grasp the technical and practical aspects of the land-based disposal component of Integrated Waste Management and is augmented by our new course entitled Gaining critical insight into recent waste law - Towards implementation and compliance, which inter alia addresses the legal aspects of Integrated Waste Management. Date: July 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) An Introduction to Waste Classification in South Africa: Towards Implementation of the National Environmental Management Waste Act (CEM ) The aim of this two-day course is to provide students with an overview of the Draft Waste Classification and Management Regulations. The course focuses on the content, interpretation and purpose of the draft regulations, as well as its application, status and implementation. In addition, the course provides an overview of the legislation and fundamental principles applicable to waste classification and management. Students will also be introduced to the general aspects and application of the Globally Harmonised System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS; SANS 10234), on which the Draft Waste Classification and Management Regulations are founded. Date: September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) An Introduction to Integrated Waste Management for Municipalities: A Practical Approach (CEM ) The aim of the course is to provide delegates with a basic, practical understanding of the principles of integrated waste management and good practices to effectively manage waste through its entire life cycle - from cradle to grave. The course will focus on the implications of the South African legislation for local government, the waste hierarchy, integrated waste management planning, waste classification, waste transportation, waste disposal site selection, evaluation and permitting, and the operation, monitoring and auditing of the site. The course will also focus on new trends in land-based waste disposal, including waste management, best practice in sustainable land filling, and recycling and alternative technologies. 8 Essential Air Quality Management (CEM ) The objective of the course is to: Introduce students to the terms and concepts used in the air quality management discipline; Provide background knowledge on air pollutants, their sources, effects and mitigation measures; Demonstrate the techniques used in the development of emission inventories and in dispersion modeling; and Provide an introduction to the legal framework used to control air pollution in South Africa. Date: September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Water Quality Monitoring: Principles, Approaches and Techniques (CEM ) The course aims at enabling environmental managers to understand the principles and the practical approaches and techniques required to effectively monitor the chemical, hydrological, microbiological and aquatic elements of water quality. It is also aimed at assisting in the design and development of effective water quality monitoring programmes which take cognisance of the relevant legal, institutional, technical and practical issues. The course will also enable the understanding of the translation of data obtained through such monitoring programmes into reliable management information. Date: 29 August 2 September 2016 Course Fee: R (No VAT charged) Basic Principles of Ecological Rehabilitation and Mine Closure (CEM ) The aim of this course is to offer managers and operational personnel the opportunity to become acquainted with the principles, legal implications and requirements, relevant technical aspects, approaches, plans, problems and solutions related to rehabilitation a mine closure. A practical programme forms an integral part of the course and consists of a site visit, case studies and a panel discussion with recognised experts and representatives of the relevant government departments, as well as the submission of a practical assignment.
