Setting Up a Scan for PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications) Setting Up a Manual Scan 1. Open Sophos Anti-Virus by right clicking the Blue shield. 2. Select the "Open Sophos Anti-Virus" from the menu provided. 3. Click "Set up a new scan" 4. Select only the local drives never networked drives. Local drives are C and sometimes D. 5. Below the local dives have been selected:
6. Provide a name for the scan, like "Manual scan for PUA". 7. Click the "Configure this scan" option at the bottom. 8. Make sure the box is checked for "Scan for potentially unwanted applications". If there is no check there, check the box using the mouse. 9. Click the "Cleanup" tab to see what clean up options are available. Here is a break down of what the options mean: A. If you check "Automatically clean up items that contain a virus" Sophos will clean some known viruses off the computer during the scan. B. "Do nothing, means Sophos will quarantine in place any virus, etc. it finds that it cannot automatically clean up based on option A. This is the recommend setting. C. We highly recommend leaving Automatically clean up potentially unwanted applications unchecked. Setting Up A Scan for PUAs Page 2
IMPORTANT NOTE: if you check Automatically clean up potentially unwanted applications, it will likely remove applications you want or need from your computer. If you would like to learn about the implications for your programs, there are separate instructions: www.ts.vcu.edu/security/vcu-puamanual.pdf The scheduled scan settings in the VCU-provided version of Sophos do not automatically clean potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) found during the scan. 10. The settings here will scan for PUA but not clean them. 11. Click OK. 12. This is meant to be a manual scan so save the scan but do not schedule it. 13. Now the scan is listed within the scan window. 14. Then click start to have the scan begin. 15. Once the scan completes you will see the following message: Setting Up A Scan for PUAs Page 3
16. Now open the Quarantine manager by clicking the word "Quarantine" on the results window or using the Sophos main window. 17. Applications: 18. Click the link "List of authorized applications" will provide a place to authorize applications found. 19. By adding the applications you wish to allow on your computer to the "Authorized applications" side Sophos will allow these applications to run. 20. Click OK to save. Setting Your Scan to Run Automatically Once you have created a scan, you can Schedule it so it runs automatically at an interval you choose. Once you Schedule a scan, it cannot be run manually. If you want to have the option of having a manual scan, you can set up another scan by following the above instructions again. Simply give your scan a different name. 1. Once Sophos is open, select a scan that you have created and click on Edit. 2. Click Schedule this scan. 3. Fill out the Schedule scan form: Click Enable schedule. Select the days you wish the scan to occur. Click Edit button and change time to when you want scan to occur (your computer must be on for the scan to occur, so choose times your computer will be on). Enter the administrator user account and password (this is probably the user name and password you use to start your computer. Click OK Setting Up A Scan for PUAs Page 5
4. This screen will appear saying the scheduled scan cannot be run manually. (If you would like to run a manual scan again, you ll need to set up a new manual scan). Click Save. 5. Now the scan no longer has the Start option for manual scan. It does have a little clock icon and can still be edited if you choose. You can change the scheduled run time by clicking on Edit again.
