Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences University of Padova Via F. Marzolo 5, 35131 Padova 1
The purpose of the Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies is to endow The Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences offers a Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies students with a sound scientific knowledge for health biotechnologies and modern pharmaceutical research. Research in both academic and industrial setting is intensely devoted to the study and development of biopharmaceuticals, including the development of biologics and monoclonal antibodies of new conception. The organization and the needs of the research in the pharmaceutical field have changed dramatically in recent years. Currently, the pharmaceutical scientist requires a thorough education and expertise in molecular biology, genetics, recombinant DNA techniques and bioinformatics, with a solid background in chemistry, pharmacology and advanced pharmaceutical technology. The professionals working in pharmaceutical R&D and production must possess a sound interdisciplinary knowledge, including the specific technical and regulatory issues dedicated to the research, development and monitoring of innovative drugs and biosimilars. The interdisciplinary knowledge is paramount to guarantee pro-active communications between pharmaceutical scientists and all professionals converging in the R&D process of drugs. The Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences, in order to meet the novel needs of modern pharmaceutical research, offers a Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies. This offer emerges from the vocation of the Department for the biotechnological sciences. 2
Graduates in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies will acquire a solid preparation to design, develop, analyze and formulate innovative drugs Graduates in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies will acquire a solid knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology and protein engineering, immunology, pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology, and in those disciplines required to design, analyze and formulate innovative drugs such as biologics and drugs employed in targeted therapies. Years: 2 Credits: 120 Attention will be given to disciplines enabling the student to understand the physico-chemical properties of molecules and macromolecules, underlying the analytical methods exploited for the identification, purification and characterization of biopharmaceuticals during production and quality control. Furthermore, the effect of the physicochemical properties on the function, the pharmacokinetic profile, the stability and formulation requirements will be thoroughly elucidated. Regular lectures will be coupled to seminars and short courses held by invited teachers from academia and industry in the frame of the Erasmus and other exchange programs of the University of Padova. 3
Knowledge, competence and skills Knowledge 10 Course Program, plus 1 elective Course and a free choice between Short Courses and Seminars. Topics of Courses focus on: Molecular mechanisms of drug actions. Molecular and Structural Biology Proteomics Immunochemistry and Diagnostics Technologies for drug discovery Innovative drug delivery Competence The second semester of the second year is dedicated to the experimental thesis (30 Credits) in laboratories of the University of Padova or in other public or private institutions. Students will work independently on their projects, and will finally write a scientific report as original manuscript and discuss their dissertation. Thesis in the frame of international exchange schemes or interlaboratory scientific collaborations are encouraged. 4 Skills Conceptual and analytical thinking skills Critical thinking, judgment ability, decision making Information competences: how to find, organize and use information Communication skills: writing and presenting data, results and ideas, both in Italian and in English
