The Master of Arts Instructional Technology & E-Learning program enables graduates to meet the needs of schools, as well as business and industry, health and human services, government, and the military. It is clear that e-learning is here to stay. Experts are sought after to fill positions in education, business, government, and non-profit organizations. MEET Jenifer Almassy When a teaching opportunity brought Jenifer Almassy to mid-eastern Michigan in late 1990s, the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo area native was happy. But when she faced being laid off two years later, she had her first inkling of wanting to be more marketable and thought that an advanced degree in educational technology was the best approach. Jenifer was hired by Reese High School in 2000 as a computer and English teacher. In addition to her classroom role, she wore other hats, including work as a professional development coordinator and serving on technology committees. The more she did, the more she knew I wanted more in technology. I was ready to go back to school, ready to develop professionally, and ready for the next challenge. I thought technology director was it. So in 2007, Jenifer enrolled in SVSU s Master of Arts Instructional Technology & E-Learning (MAITEL) program. Though she looked at several regional universities, she liked SVSU s many on-line classes, and the people. She had participated in the Saginaw Valley Regional Summer Institute held on the SVSU campus and was impressed by the professionalism of the SVSU staff, the class delivery and the flawlessness of the way the program was managed. It suggested to Jenifer that she would have a similarly impressive experience at SVSU as a graduate student and she did. Jenifer had set out to get the MAITEL degree so that she could be a tech director. Yet when she completed her degree in 2008, such jobs were scarce. Yet rather than bemoan the fact that her title didn t change, Jenifer says she is still thrilled with her education and its practical application that she uses in her role as English and computer teacher. There is value and benefit regardless of the teaching role. If a teacher is stagnant or wants a different way to express him/herself or reach students, then technology is the tool to do that. Each class I took in the MAITEL program has allowed me to put something new into my classes. Nothing I learned was busy work; it all has had applicability.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHN The Master of Arts Instructional Technology & E-Learning (MAITEL) degree offers the following two cognates of study... INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY COGNATE The Instructional Technology cognate is available for classroom teachers interested in integrating technology into their curriculum, school administrators or teachers charged with decision-making and administration of technology. It is also perfect for business or government personnel involved in the development and administration of technology based training. E-LEARNING COGNATE The E-Learning cognate is designed for organizational leaders who are interested in enhancing their professional practice through the study and application of online knowledge related to instruction and learning via distance education technologies. Topics include understanding knowledge management and the reuse of knowledge, applying universal design, developing techniques for distance education, and developing appropriate materials for online learning environments. ASSOCIATED ENDORSEMENT The Educational Technology (NP) endorsement consists of 21 credits and prepares teachers to use technology resources for classroom instruction. This endorsement will also qualify teachers in other computer-related classes for which no specific endorsement is needed such as Computer Literacy, Word Processing and Key Boarding, Computer Applications, Web Design, and Introduction to the Internet. Courses for this endorsement are offered on-line and as hybrids (combination of in-class and online). Additionally, these seven courses fit into a 36-hour (12 courses) Master of Arts Instructional Technology & E-Learning degree. ACCREDITATIONS Saginaw Valley State University maintains the highest level of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The commission sets a standard of integrity for universities, taking into consideration the academic mission, strategy, resources, assessment process, teaching effectiveness, student learning, usefulness of curricula, and community involvement. The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Saginaw Valley State University is approved as a teacher preparation institution by action of the Michigan State Board of Education. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A completed Application for Graduate Admission including the non-refundable application fee and the following: A bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 A demonstrated knowledge of personal computer usage and applications is required. Experience with technology in the classroom is desirable, but not a requirement for admission. Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts A copy of most recent teaching certificate* *Only required for those seeking an NP Endorsement INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS must complete the International Student Application for Graduate Admission including the non-refundable application fee, all items listed above, as well as: Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. The College accepts a score of 550 or higher on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a passing score on an alternative test determined by the college. SVSU s English Language Program is available for students without a TOEFL score of those with a TOEFL score below the required minimum. Successful completion of the English Language Program does not guaranteed acceptance to a graduate program at SVSU. Applicants seeking financial aid must apply at least two months prior to the start of the semester.
