Each cohort member will automatically receive the UNT Dallas Development of Leaders Scholarship valued at $4,000 ($2000 per year). The 39 semester hour Master of Education degree with a major in Educational Administration focuses on the skills and knowledge required for campus level and central office administration. The Texas Principal Certificate is the target for this program. Minimum 2 years of prior teaching experience required. 2 Educational Administration and Principal Certification The University of North Texas Dallas Division of Education and Human Services offers graduate programs to develop highly competent teachers, school administrators and other professionals who provide educational leadership in public and private schools and other organizations. Our Master of Education degree in Educational Administration focuses on the skills and knowledge required for campuslevel and central office administration. The Texas principal certificate is available if you are seeking a master s degree or if you already hold a master s degree in another area. Effective instruction, curriculum development and evaluation are emphasized in all of our programs. You will use current theory and research to make decisions about effective practices. The program also strives to improve practices through the generation of new knowledge and service to educational institutions, governmental agencies and practitioners at all levels. Outstanding superintendents, assistant superintendents and principals often teach courses in our program and offer realworld experiences in educational administration. Faculty members work closely with school districts and regional Education Service Centers and participate in various partnership activities, including distance-learning courses. The program content is aimed toward meeting the challenges and opportunities of working in a diverse and dynamic educational environment. You can also receive required training leading to Instructional Leadership Development (ILD) certification and the Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) Appraiser certification. COURSE REQUIREMENTS (36 credit hours; 39 credit hours for Principal Certification) CORE COURSES (12 hours) (Courses must be taken prior to Professional Courses and can be taken in any order) EDAD 5300 Introduction to Educational Administration EDAD 5330 Instructional Leadership EDAD 5390 Campus Level School Law EDAD 5400 Management of School Resources INTERNSHIP (3 hours) After the student has completed the four core courses, the student may apply for Internship (EDAD 5500). Once the student is enrolled in the internship, the faculty Internship Supervisor becomes the advisor for the remainder of the program. Internship must be taken prior to the Practicum course for students seeking principal certification. PROFESSIONAL COURSES (18 hours) EDAD 5600 Race, Class and Gender Issues in Administration EDAD 5610 Communications and Public Relations EDAD 5620 Administration and Leadership for Student Educational Services EDAD 5630 EDAD 5650 EDAD 5680 Organizational Change and School Improvement Professional Development and Supervision Administration of the K-12 Curriculum ELECTIVE COURSE (3 hours) One course chosen from: EDBE, EDAD, EDCI, EDEE, EDER, EDRE, EDSE, EDSP, EPSY, ATTD, CECS, or other graduate level course approved by an advisor and the UNT Dallas Graduate School. Courses must be 5000 level or higher, 3-credit hour, letter graded, graduate level courses. FINAL COURSE (3 hours) EDAD 5700* - Practicum in Educational Administration (Must be final course taken in the final semester). APPLY EARLY! *Students must apply for the practicum in advance by the appropriate deadline as stated on the application. 3 Graduate School Admissions Procedures Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Administration & Principal Certification Program will need to meet the minimum admissions for graduate admission before being considered for admission to the Educational Administration (EDAD) program. Please follow these steps to apply for admission to graduate studies: 1. Complete the application at When selecting your major, it is important to indicate that you will enroll in Educational Administration MEd program at UNT Dallas. 2. Submit application fee - $60 for U.S. residents and $75 for International Students. 3. Submit official GRE scores from the Educational Testing Service. No unofficial reports will be accepted. Departmental Admissions Procedures Once you have submitted the online application for admission to graduate studies, please begin completing the enclosed departmental application. Any student applying to the EDAD program must be fully admitted prior to program orientation and be able to attend orientation. Applications received on or after orientation may not be considered; therefore these students may be required to defer their applications to a subsequent semester. 4 INFORMATION SHEET UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS DALLAS Educational Administration Program Master s Degree in Educational Administration (EADM) & Principal Certification MASTER S ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS This information sheet describes the admissions requirements, and program components of the Educational Administration (EADM) M.Ed., a 36-hour program. All portions of the Admissions Packet must be completed and submitted to the program office and official GRE scores on file in graduate school before the Educational Administration faculty will take action on your application for admission. Forms are available on the program website at Any student applying to the EADM program must be fully admitted prior to program orientation and be able to attend orientation. Applications received on or after orientation may not be considered; therefore these students may be required to defer their applications to a subsequent semester. Applications are reviewed by the educational administration faculty once the application process is completed. Applicants are notified of acceptance prior to the regular registration session for the semester of application. ELIGIBILITY 1. Applicants must submit the official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the verbal, quantitative and writing sections to the graduate school for admission to the program. There is no minimum score requirement on the GRE. Please allow up to four weeks for official scores to be sent from the testing center to the graduate school. The GRE is administered on the UNT Denton campus and other universities in the Metroplex. For information about the GRE and to register for the test, contact the UNT Testing Center at 940/ Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 undergraduate semester hours of work prior to receiving the bachelor s degree, or a 2.8 GPA on all undergraduate work, to be considered for unconditional admission to the UNT Graduate School for studies at the master s level. 3. Applicants must hold at least a bachelor s degree. 4. Applicants must hold at least a provisional teacher certificate. 5. Applicants must have at least two (2) years creditable teaching experience in K-12 public or private schools prior to beginning course work. ADMISSIONS 1. Resume *Forms are located at The educational administration program faculty bases the admissions decision on all of the data reflected in the applicant s admissions file. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Provisional admission is not considered. COURSES (Each course is three (3) semester hours) The EDAD 5300 instructor will be the student s advisor or one will be assigned by the program coordinator in the event the course is taught by an adjunct professor or the student transfers an equivalent course. Degree and Certification plans are prepared in the 5300 course. After the student has completed the four core courses, the student may apply for Internship (EDAD 5500). Once the student is enrolled in the internship, the faculty Internship Supervisor becomes the advisor for the remainder of the program. In preparing the degree plan, a student may transfer up to nine (9) semester hours of course work from another institution with advisor and UNT Graduate School permission. Students have six years to complete the degree. Work that is more than six years old at the time of your graduation cannot be counted toward the Master s degree. Students must apply for graduation in the final semester of course work in order to receive the degree. 5 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS DALLAS EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM Principal Certification Requirements This information sheet describes the requirements for the Principal Certificate, a 39-hour program. ELIGIBILITY 1. Applicant must already hold a master s degree, or be enrolled in a master s degree program 2. Applicant must hold at least a provisional teacher certificate 3. Applicant must have at least two (2) years creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher in K-12 public or private schools to be admitted to the program. ADMISSIONS 1. Submit the following to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies: a. Graduate School Application for Admission to the Principal Certification Program (apply online at b. Official copies of all college transcripts (The GRE is not required for certification only / non-degree seeking students that already hold a master s degree) 2. Submit the following to the EADM Program office: a. Program Application Form Indicate Principal Certification on the form CERTIFICATION COMPONENTS COURSE REQUIREMENTS The requirements include completion of the 36 hours listed under the *Master s degree requirements on the reverse or other master s degree, plus a three (3) hour internship after completion of the core courses. There is a seven (7) year time limitation for courses counted for certification, which means courses on the certification plan cannot be over seven years old at the time of completion of the program. EDAD 5500, Internship in Educational Administration, can be taken after the completion of the four (4) core courses. Internship cannot be used towards a Master s or Doctoral degree in Educational Administration. EDAD 5500 requires multiple meetings and 125 hours of interviews, observations, and participation in administrative functions at the school/central office in which the intern is a faculty member or administrator, as well as at other sites determined by the supervisory team consisting of the district designate supervisor and the university supervisor. Students must submit an application for internship in advance. The application can be found at: or may be picked up from the program office in Denton, in Matthews Hall, Suite 218. Students may not take internship and practicum in the same semester. Deadlines to apply for internship are: Feb.1 for Summer; March 1 for Fall; Oct. 1 for Spring. Students do not early register for internship. Applications received after the deadline will be placed on a waiting list. Students are notified of acceptance or denial by or before April 20 for summer; August 20 for Fall and December 20 for spring internship. DEFICIENCY PLANS Program Area Certification Deficiency Plans are developed in the introductory class, EDAD The EDAD 5300 instructor will evaluate transcripts to determine the courses needed for the Principal Certificate and courses that can be transferred from a Master s in another field of study. A copy of this Deficiency Plan will be sent to the COE Certification Officer. Students that may have a substitution for EDAD 5300 must schedule an appointment with an advisor to prepare a deficiency plan. This should be done prior to or during the first semester of course work instructors serve as student advisors until the student is enrolled in the Internship (5500). At that point the internship supervisor will serve as advisor for the remainder of course work toward the certification. PROBATIONARY PRINCIPAL OR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CERTIFICATE PROCEDURES The probationary certificate is valid for one year and is renewable for two more one-year periods. Students may apply for this certificate upon completion of the UNT educational administration program's common core courses (12 semester hours: EDAD 5300, 5330, 5390, and 5400). A certification plan signed by an educational administration instructor and a teaching service record from the district must be on file before the probationary certificate can be granted. The teaching service record should be faxed to the COE certification officer at In addition, certification requirements from the state require a completed Statement of Eligibility form the University and the school district for the student be granted a probationary certificate. TExES (Examination for Principal Certification) After the student completes all principal certification courses, the student must pass the State administered examination for this certificate. To be eligible to take the TExES exam, the student must be in the final semester of course work or have recently completed the course work and have a certification plan on file in the TAO. Instructions on how to apply can be found at: Students register for the exam online at SBEC will contact the COE-TAO to verify eligibility. If the applicant is eligible to take the exam, applicant will see only the exam applicable. Contact the COE-TAO in Matthews Hall, suite 103, (940/ ) if you have difficulty registering. After the student has passed the exam and all class work is complete with grades posted, the student may apply online to the state (SBEC) for the Principal Certificate, PLEASE NOTE, ONLY STUDENTS WITH A MASTER S DEGREE POSTED ON THEIR TRANSCRIPT MAY BE APPROVED FOR THE PRINCIPAL CERTIFICATION. Contact the Certification Officer located in the Student Advising Office, Matthews Hall, Suite 105, 940/ , for questions regarding the online procedure. ***CHANGE IN STATUS FROM CERTIFICATION/NON-DEGREE TO DEGREE SEEKING (12 hour rule)*** A student who thinks he or she may switch from certification/non-degree status to degree status must make this decision during the first twelve (12) hours of course work when enrolled as certification/non-degree status (GNDE OR CERT). Any credit taken at UNT beyond the twelve hours will not count toward the master s or doctoral degree in Educational Administration. To change to degree seeking status the student must: 1) meet all regular M.Ed. Admission requirements of the Graduate School and the program; 2) complete & submit a Change of Major/Status Application in the Graduate School; 3) after unconditional acceptance from the Graduate School and the Educational Administration Program is received, the student should meet with an advisor to file a degree plan.
