Jeff Smith returns to the helm in Fort Myers after five years After spending the last five seasons as the manager of the Twins former Double-A affiliate, the New Britain Rock Cats, Jeff Smith has returned home for his second stint as skipper of the Fort Myers Miracle. A native of Naples, Fla. and graduate of Naples High School, Smith was drafted in the 20th round by Minnesota after attending Stetson University. Primarily a catcher, Smith totaled nine years experience in the minor leagues as a player and appeared in 658 games, including 55 with the Miracle. Smith, 40, begins his second tenure with the Miracle as a manager after spending the 2008 and 2009 seasons at Hammond Stadium. In his first two years, Smith led the Miracle to the playoffs; winning the FSL West first half in 2008 and the FSL South second half in 2009. Jeff accumulated a 157-117 record in his first stint with the Miracle. Kohl front moves through Fort Myers In 2013, the Twins made Kohl Stewart the No. 4 overall selection in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Since then, Stewart has steadily risen through the ranks of the organization and arrived in the Florida State League with the Miracle to start the 2015 campaign. In 19 starts with Single-A Cedar Rapids in 2014, Stewart went 3-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 62 punchouts in 87 innings. Sporting a low-to-mid 90s fastball with excellent life, the 6-3, 205-pound native of Tomball, Texas is expected to be the ace of a talented pitching staff in Fort Myers. In addition to his fastball, Stewart throws a power slider, sinker, curveball and changeup. Garver garners attention, promotion with splendid 2014 A ninth round pick after four years at the University of New Mexico, Mitch Garver was considered one of the premier catchers in NCAA baseball after the 2013 season. Moving on to Cedar Rapids last year, Garver proved to be up to the task of full season ball with an impressive showing in the Midwest League. Hitting.298 over 120 games, Garver also pounded 46 extra-base hits, including 16 home runs, posted a.399 on-base percentage and drove in 79 runs. Named a Midwest League Postseason All-Star, Garver was also awarded the catcher position on the MiLB.com Organizational All-Star Team. Considered a strong defensive presence behind the plate, Garver gunned down 22-of-68 attempted base-stealers in 2014 for the Kernels; a percentage of 32.4. Miracle return 12 players off 2014 FSL Championship squad While much of the roster and the manager are new for the Miracle to start the 2015 season, there are many familiar faces that return to the FSL as defending champions. In the bullpen, Madison Boer, Brian Gilbert, Alex Muren, Brandon Peterson, Tim Shibuya, Aaron Slegers and Todd Van Steensel all spent time with the Miracle during the championship run. On the infield, Niko Goodrum, Aderling Mejia and Bryan Haar are back. In the outfield, Jason Kanzler returns to roam center field after hitting the eventual game-winning home run in the eleventh inning of the deciding game four of the FSL Championship Series last September.
