Message from SCTS Secretary Surgical Care Practitioners are becoming more and more pivotal in delivering cardiac (and thoracic) surgical care. There are around 250 SCPs in the UK involved in cardiothoracic surgery - and as junior doctors are phased out of their service requirement this staff group of SCPs will increase in number and importance. As a group they are qualified nurse or ODP and are affiliated to SCTS and or ACSA if they choose to. They assist in theatres, see patients pre and post operatively and also help in outpatients. They are routinely harvest the saphenous vein for bypass surgery and occasionally the radial artery. They are also work as an assistant to surgeons in all cardiothoracic surgical procedures. This is challenging technical surgery which is vitally important for the success of the bypass procedure as well as making sure the wounds heal without complications. So, the educational developments of SCPs are important for the cardiothoracic society and also for their continuous professional development. Mr. Simon Kendall MS, FRCS. Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon Secretary Society of Cardiothoracic surgery. 3
