The Course is primarily based on students active participating in research projects. By the end of the Master s program graduates should be able to design their own PhD research project. The last decades have been marked with the steady decrease of the number of innovative pharmaceuticals approved for use in humans. This is ironic in the view of better insight and understanding of the disease mechanisms. Establishing Master s degree courses in Pharmacology is aimed at helping to reverse this worrying trend of decreased output of research and development. This is particularly relevant for Russia, Kazakhstan with their growing economy and political will for Health Technology Transfer and Pharmaceutical Reform. The multidisciplinary field of pharmacology focuses on the causes and pathophysiology of disease and interventions with both chemical and biological medicines. This requires close cooperation of researchers in the classical natural sciences (biology, chemistry, and mathematics) with those in medical and pharmaceutical fields (medicines, pharmacy). This is reflected in the
Master s program and supervisors give special emphasis to such co-operation. A mechanism to involve the co-operation of various research groups has been established. The logistics of the Course allows students of the Masters in Pharmacology program to opt for fundamental or applied research, or a combination of both, thus offering many research possibilities. Because the scope of work that a medical / pharmaceutical researcher involves a broad range of activities, the Master s program includes various research models. For example: Investigation of disease origin and mechanisms of its development (both in a patient, in an animal or on a model system). Search for active substances, potentially affecting this process, Design of effective therapeutic regimens. Investigating medicine use and consumption in actual clinical practice and in community. Design of, and assessment of effects, of policy interventions on medicine use and clinical outcomes. Special projects that may include focus on specific pharmaceuticals of pharmaceutical groups, e.g. biologicals (vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, gene therapies) or diagnostics, etc. The ultimate goal of the teaching staff of the Masters in Pharmacology Course is to implement the program as a challenging, exciting and comprehensive introduction to the fascinating world of medicines. The Master s program covers those subjects required to train current and future researchers and/or health professionals in Pharmacology with the emphasis on rational drug development, rational drug use, therapeutics and evidence. The Master s program comprises a total of 3960 hours (600 days and 24 months two years, 136 (120) ECTs ) and includes: 1. Theoretical courses 2. Seminars 3. Research projects (could be divided into major and minor research projects) 4. Electives 5. Masters thesis Academic staff (Академический персонал): Qualified teaching staff provides implementation of the Master in Pharmacology program, with 100% of the teachers holding doctorate (DSci) or PhD degrees. Career opportunities (Карьерные возможности): Graduates with a degree of Master s (MSc) in Pharmacology would have the following career opportunities. Primary candidates for many PhD programs, either at the same universities or internationally. Masters in Pharmacology course provides a unique opportunity of creating students own PhD projects and contributing to it in advance. Key specialists in administrative / legal / regulatory / policy affairs, particularly within the profile of pharmaceutical regulation. Positions linking medical pharmaceutical sciences to pharmaceutical business or policy strategy should become increasingly available at governmental and semi-governmental institutions such as the medicines evaluation boards or the Ministry of Health, at societal (non-governmental) organizations. Careers in education, lecturing and / or research in any biomedical or pharmaceutical field. Positions in academic and general hospitals / clinics. They would become key specialists in drug evaluation boards / formulary committees, clinical research, policymaking, clinical education, management and communications. Positions in research-intensive institutes within pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry emerging in Kazakhstan and internationally. They would be able to contribute to drug innovation within research institutes at any of the growing number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies or to advise on the rational use of medicines within health care organizations.
