2 MSc Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology General Info This master program prepares you for a career in health research and is embedded in the UMCG. The focus is on psychosocial in addition to biomedical factors. You can choose your own field of expertise to specialize in, either in health psychology, psychiatry, epidemiology and public health. Top researchers will provide individual supervision and you will have access to excellent (clinical) research groups, and to several cohort studies, like Lifelines. Content During the two years, aspects of psychosocial and biomedical science will be explored more in depth. The emphasis is on hands-on experience, including writing a proposal, collecting and analyzing your data. Collecting of data may involve direct contact with patients if appreciated and collaboration with clinical groups is facilitated. Furthermore, to stimulate scientific thinking and reasoning, small coaching groups will meet once a week during the entire program under the supervision of a scientific coach. Career prospects After successful completion of the program, you can apply for one of the PhD positions that are linked to the master program, or continue in PhD programs elsewhere. The program s focus is on molecular and translational medical research. Furthermore, developing scientific skills including a critical and analytical scientific mindset is important, not knowledge retention. The students are able to specialize in their field of interests and aspirations, will have coaching by top scientist and will have excess to excellent facilities for (pharmaco) genomics, proteomics and in vivo (animal) and in vitro (cell) imaging. During the two years, you will participate in theoretical classes and work on two research projects to provide you with a hands-on experience. Shared courses give a background in the field as almost all aspects of neuroscience will be taught by experts, giving you perspective for the more specific track/field in which you will become an expert. Students will quickly familiarize themselves with new fields and methodologies. KEY FACTS Intended for BSc Psychology BSc Life Sciences BSc Global Health BSc Biology Master Duration: 24 months Language: English Content A large proportion of the program is devoted to two research projects in which the students are embedded in successful research groups or institutes to conduct their own research. The program offers three tracks: Animal and Human Behaviour (B-track), which focuses on all aspects of the evolution, function, causation and development of behavior, while linking it to the underlying physiology. Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Modeling (C-track), which focuses on cognitive processing from psychological, neurological and modeling perspectives. Molecular and Clinical Neuroscience (N-track), focusing on molecular and functional neurosciences, neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, neuroinflammatory processes and stem cell biology. 5 Alumni Career prospects - examples Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology Lei Zhu, PhD Student Health Psychology, UMC Groningen The interest in how psychology and medicine can be interacted with each other to help people, led me to choose the Research Master s program Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology. The lectures were interactive with sufficient communication between students and lecturers. Each student works with top scientists during the master thesis project and learns how to perform scientific research. After finishing the research master program, I started my PhD project in department of health psychology in UMCG. My PhD project is focused on cancer patients who were receiving psychosocial care in psycho-oncology institutions. I am interested in examining the underlying mechanisms of psychosocial care, for example, how patients personal resources changed during psychosocial care. Without the Research Master program, this would not have been possible. The CPE program not only offered me the state-of-the-art knowledge in health field, but also provided me necessary skills (i.e., thinking, writing, presenting) to perform research. Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation Metta Pratt, PhD student, University of Oxford After my Pharmacy bachelor s degree, I choose the Topmaster Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation. Throughout the two years I valued the small scale and the close interaction between students and professors. Looking back, I have learned the basics and organization of academic science, how to be critical and to present my work. All of this has helped me to secure a PhD position and to get started in my PhD project on centrosomes and cilia in fruit flies. The master was an amazing opportunity to get an overview of biomedical research and to discover what interests you the most.
