Suggested Timeline Fall semester prior to application deadline: Prioritize making the best grades possible in your fall classes Review the 2015 BSN application Review the essay prompt Meet with a pre-nursing advisor if needed Request transcripts from previous institutions. This includes any coursework not taken at ASU. Wait to request your ASU transcript until final grades are posted for fall and all spring classes are listed
Suggested Timeline continued Winter Break: Fill out a draft of the BSN application Write your essay Review your unofficial transcript from ASU to ensure that your fall grades are on it and all spring classes are listed Request a final OFFICIAL transcript from ASU. DO NOT OPEN THIS! Create an application packet. Add your completed application, official sealed transcript(s), and essay to a large envelope.
Suggested Timeline continued January 2015: Finalize your 2015 BSN application Print your essay Confirm that you have an official, sealed transcript for each college institution Submit your completed BSN application packet to the Dept. of Nursing no later than 5 pm on January 15, 2015. We recommend the day before.
Parallel Planning Options What are my options if I don t get accepted to this year s BSN class?
Option 1: Change your major and stay at App State Graduate with a Bachelor s degree in a different field. Pursue an Accelerated Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (ABSN) after you graduate from ASU. Please note that ASU does NOT offer an Accelerated BSN option.
Option 1: continued There are 7 that we have identified in NC. Duke University (Durham, NC) North Carolina A & T State University (Greensboro, NC) Queens University of Charlotte (Charlotte, NC) The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Chapel Hill, NC) Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC) Winston-Salem State University (Winston-Salem, NC) East Carolina University (Greenville, NC)
Option 2: Work toward your parallel major and re-apply for 2016 Remain at AppState and take classes for your parallel major (hopefully meeting the requirements a minor in this field, too.) Concentrate on improving your GPA. Consider repeating a class(es). Remember you get four grade replacements in your career at ASU.
Option 2: continued Please note that if you decide to stay an extra year at ASU and reapply next year you should speak with a Financial Aid Counselor to see how this will affect your financial aid. Also, estimate your total hours to graduation to see if you will be able to avoid the Tuition Surcharge (aka The 140 Hour Rule).
Option 3: Apply to another University s Nursing program You may be eligible to apply to another nursing program at a 4 year University. Many of you have already looked into this. Some of you have planned to do this all along. Some 4 year Universities admit students twice a year (i.e. Fall & Spring)
Option 3: continued Things to consider: Requirements vary Check the application deadlines Check the program requirements Check pre-requisite requirements Check general education requirements Be sure to speak with someone at each institution to verify their requirements.
Option 4: Apply to a Community College All nursing programs are competitive. Again, requirements vary. Check the application deadlines Check the program requirements Check pre-requisite requirements Check general education requirements Be sure to speak with someone at each institution to verify their requirements.
Option 4: continued If successful, you will graduate with an Associate s degree in Nursing (ADN). You may choose to then complete a RN to BSN program. ASU offers an online program through our Distance Education Office.
I got accepted to ASU s BSN program what now? Follow the instructions on the notification of provisional admission. Read it carefully! Make sure you earn a C or better in your Spring Nursing pre-requisite courses. Make sure you are prepared to attend first and second summer session at ASU this summer.
