Startup lecture S-38.2131 and S-38.3133 Term I 2015-2016 Juha Järvinen General S-38.2131 Networking Technology, laboratory course A (1-3 cr) S-38.3133 Networking Technology, laboratory course B (2-5 cr) Learning outcomes: Students understand how communication networks function in practice. Content: Laboratory works about transmission and networking technology including signalling in telephone networks, ISDN and its services, communication networks, LANs, routing protocols (OSPF, RIP, BGP), VoIP, VPN, security etc. 2 1

General Courses are running on periods I-V Responsible teacher: Juha Järvinen Juha.Tapio.Jarvinen@aalto.fi If you do labs for the A course, the lab grade cannot be utilized on the B course, or vice versa You are able to change your partner for every lab work, if you like Or if you would like to do more labs than your partner 3 ECTS S-38.2131 2 labs: 1 ECT 3 labs: 2 ECTS 5 labs: 3 ECTS S-38.3133 3 labs: 2 ECTS 5 labs: 3 ECTS 7 labs: 4 ECTS 9 labs: 5 ECTS 4 2

Labworks S-38.2131 IPv4 Routing (compulsory), VPN, DNS, Security, Multicast Routing I, DX-210 and WLAN S-38.3133 Transmission technology: DX-210 telephone exchange Networking technology: IPv4 Routing, VPN, IPv6 Routing, Multicast I, Network Monitoring, DNS, BGP, Security, VoIP and WLAN IPv4 routing before BGP, IPv6 and VPN 5 How to (for each lab work) Reserve a lab time in the reservation system Do a preliminary report Working at the lab Do a final report Return your final report into the system Loop this as long as you want, then jump (next slide) 6 3

How to (after the last labwork) Write a personal report and return to Juha.Tapio.Jarvinen@aalto.fi you will get ECTS Thinking about the course as a whole Would you like to add a new assignment? Why? Is there any assignment that you would like to remove? Why? Consider every assignment separately and answer to the following questions Mark after each topic who was your assistant while working in the laboratory (not necessary the same assistant who will correct your report). Did you have enough preliminary knowledge to master this assignment? What did you learn? Tell some of the insights that you had? How does this assignment support your other studies? What would you like to add to this assignment? What would you like to remove from this assignment? Any other thoughts about this assignment It is warmly recommended that you make this report little by little, at the same time you are writing your report of each lab work 7 Reports Front page - model page Preliminary report 3 days before Final report max 2 weeks after working at the lab In.pdf format Language: English in reports for English report corrector (see list in NOPPA) Otherwise you write reports in Finnish, English or Swedish. But this is a quite good point to practise for a thesis Finns: Do not use Finglish!! Interface on kytketty letkulla swithciin (Rajapinta on kytketty johdolla kytkimeen). IPv4 Routing - use report model Use several sources (not Wikipedia) Copy-Paste is not allowed In the end of your reports your should name all the references you have used. In addition, everywhere in your text you should mark somehow where you have used your references. In case of www sources you should mention the whole URL and the date when cited. Reports (pre+final) one/group Personal report one/person More information in Noppa 8 4

A magnifying glass on the previous slide Copy-Paste is not allowed In the end of your reports your should name all the references you have used. In addition, everywhere in your text you should mark somehow where you have used your references. In case of www sources you should mention the whole URL and the date when cited. Do not try to play with us with this thing! You are warned now 9 And Both of the lab partners have to be in the lab all the time. Come sharp (not 15 minutes past ) The labs take all the reserved time: IPv4 routing others 3 hours Weight IPv4 routing = 2, the rest = 1 Both of you must understand the preliminary report: prepare well. Assistants will check wheter you have prepared or not by making questions on the subject -> a short oral test You should have all the documents needed with you. Don t start to print them during the working in the lab. Electrical evaluation voluntary (Oodi) Feedback about your grading: contact the assistant who graded that work Wireshark tool, instructions in Noppa 10 5

Grading Each lab will be graded separetely Grade is shown in the reservation system Grade can be different between group members Preliminary and final reports Laboratory working including a short oral preliminary exam before every lab: grade - 1 if failed) Personal report has to be done (not graded) Total grade is weighted average of individual labwork grades 11 Note Every lab has two assistants (might be the same person) Grading assistant Supervising assistant If you would like to get some feedback concerning of reports etc. Contact grading assistant If your data obtained during lab is missing, for example Contact supervising assistant 6

Note If you have to cancel your reservation 3 days (72h) before your lab time, inform supervising assistants, too! NOPPA Order the news of this course or follow a RSS feed instructions in MyCourses site Mycourses.aalto.fi 14 7

Review If you are not satisfied your grade or want to ask something concerning of an individual labwork, email to a grading assistant and add as cc Juha.Tapio.Jarvinen@aalto.fi Reservation system Available lab times - reserve Both student numbers have to be written at reservation Confirm your reservation within one hour You will get an email where a link to confirm Send reports through the reservation system 16 8

Reservation system www.netlab.tkk.fi/opetus/labravaraus/ 17 Report Format Front page Do not copy-paste any text! Do not copy-paste even images (just photos) Redraw all the images and mark a source Try to use the same drawing program if possible during one report (Same style) Do not include screen dumps if not asked to do Boomerang immediately You can start thinking what s wrong if the amount of pages is over 20 in your report References 9

Lab room You will find the lab room in the address: G220 The door to the laboratory will be closed at 3.45 pm assistants check perodically if you are waiting outside of the lab room) Or call: 050 4355 145 Report Templates Use report templates Word Latex Use report template also for personal reports 10

During the lab session Ask, if question You need concentration of 3-5 hours. This is a quite lot Start doing you final report immediately after your lab session, not after the 13th day. 21 What to do next? Form a group of two people Send email to Juha.Tapio.Jarvinen@aalto.fi by this Friday One email per a group Subject: S-38.XXXX New Group Both names and student numbers, and email addresses I will add you into reservation system ASAP When this is done, both of you will get an email (latest on next Monday) You are able to login in the system and reserve a lab time New free times will be on the next week in the system Check how to assign IP addresses (for IPv4 Routing labwork) What is a network (L2/L3)?
