Set Up a Personal Page First Facebook requires you to set up a personal page/ account prior to setting up a business page (even if you never use your personal page.) Click here to access Facebook. Once your personal page is created, click the dropdown menu in the upper right corner and select create page (see image to the left) to get started on your business page. You can view any pages that you have created through this menu. Tip: Be sure when you are posting to your business page that you are using Facebook as that business or the post will go to the wrong page. Choosing Type of Page There are 6 categories of pages to choose from when setting up your Facebook business page but only two options that are appropriate for pro contractors Local Business or Place or Company, Organization or Institution. The primary difference between the two is your preference in what information is displayed on your business page: Local Business - Displays contact information, services and hours Company, Organization or Institution - Displays a description of your services For this exercise, I will select the Local Business or Place option. I m going to create a fictitious business named FastenMaster Remodeling for demonstration. Let s walk through the steps necessary to create this page. Local Business or Place After selecting Local Business or Place, you will see this setup screen.. Choose the Home Improvement category. Input your business name 3. Input your address and phone number 4. Click Get Started, to be directed to the About setup screen where you will add more specific information about your business. Page
The About Screen This is where you add additional categories, a short description of your business (up to 55 characters), your website address (if you have one) and what you want your Facebook web address to be. 3 4 Category By clicking in this field, you can see multiple category options for your business. You can choose up to three. Description This field is required by Facebook but you only have 55 characters available to tell people about your services. You can add a longer description later (see Update Page Info ). 3 Website Address If you have a website, add the URL to this field. 4 Facebook Web Address You can choose the address (web URL) for your Facebook page. Try your business name with no spaces or special characters. In this case, I used www.facebook.com/fastenmasterremodeling. If your suggested address is already taken, Facebook will give you an alert telling you to create a different one. Try shortening or adding a regional element such as your town or state. After filling in this screen, click save info to be taken to the profile image setup screen. Page
Profile Picture This screen allows you to upload a profile picture from your computer. Choose a great image of a finished project or your logo. Your profile picture is what will be displayed every time you post something. Facebook allows for file formats such as JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF. If you are taking images on your smartphone, it will automatically be in JPEG format. (The image can not be larger than 5 MB.) After uploading your image, click next. Add to Favorites By selecting Add to Favorites on the next screen, your business page will show up in your news feed on your personal page for easy access. You can either select or skip depending on personal preference. For any remaining setup tabs, just choose skip to go directly to your new page. (The Reach More People tab is Facebook s pitch to get you to purchase ad space.) Your New Facebook Page Here s how your Facebook page will look now, but there are a few additional items that need to be completed. Add a Cover Image Click Add a Cover to select a different image to display page. This should be different from your profile picture. Once the image uploads, you are able to reposition by dragging across it. Update Page Info Click this button to be taken to your about page to add additional information (see next page). Page 3
