TRAINER S GUIDE 360 Degrees Leadership The Art of Leading from the Middle Course designed by: Adetola Sogbesan, ITF 121 (JCI Nigeria) tola@hypersand.net 234-802 290 4983

Credits The 360 Degree Leader: John Maxwell Published by Nelson Business 2

Course Outline 360 Degree Leadership SUMMARY Leadership is a complicated and difficult skill, one that no single person ever maters. There are some things you do well as a leader, and some you do poorly. It is same for all leaders, the same for you. Even the greatest leaders from history had blind spots and weak areas. So what s the solution? Organizations need to develop leadership teams at every level! A group of leaders working together is always more effective than one leader working alone. And for teams to develop at every level, they need leaders at every level. OBJECTIVES To make participant understand that leadership does not reside at the top alone. At the end of the course, participants will understand the need to see deeper and discover their leadership qualities, understand the concept of leading from where ever in hierarchy, know how to influence effectively, and be ready to be a 360 degree Leader! Time, Slides and Materials Notes for the Trainer 3 Hours 360 Degrees Leadership OPENING Display Power point Slide 1 360 Degree, the art if leading from the middle and Leave it up until you start the Session. Start the Session Promptly. Welcome all the participants and thank them for attending the Seminar. Explain that the Session will introduce a new concept in Leading from the Middle. Active participation by contributing ideas and opinions will be an important factor in effective learning during the seminar. Activity (5 Mins) Mind Grabbing Display Power point Slide 2 Whodunnit. Purpose: The purpose of slide 2 is to focus participants attention on the seminar and introduce the concept of logic reasoning. Note to the trainer: The seminar is about leading from where ever you are at the moment in any organization. Explain that this seminar will involve looking inwards, thinking deep to find most leadership questioning being answered right where we are. If you can reason more most times, you can solve the problems naturally passed on to your uplink leader. We all can lead, if we reason more! Encourage maximum participation. Tell them that to get the best results from this session, total involvement is necessary. Contributions from each participant are expected and will be a key factor in learning Ask participants if they have any questions. If so, respond to them. Introduce yourself and any other Trainer(s) in the room. Course Objectives Display the Power point Slide 3 Objectives to explain the essence and structure of the Seminar. In this session participants will understand the seminar objective and relate to their expectations. Activity (5 Mins) Participants Introduction Display Power point Slide 4 Self Introduction and Leave it up until the last person answers the last question. 4

Time, Slides and Materials Notes for the Trainer Display Power point Slide 5 Programme to explain the essence and structure of the Seminar. Note to the Trainer: Run through each point, starting from the Introduction. Link each heading to the next, with adequate explanation and end with Final thoughts that summarize everything. 10 Minutes Display Power point Slide 6 and 7 A leader is.., to introduce course proper. Participants need: Pen Paper Ask participants to stand up say something about a leader, as it relates to them in their own words, and not text book meaning. Explain that the statement, everything rises and falls on leadership is often said by John Maxwell, and this is true. When we are discussing the performance of an organisation, we cannot but talk about leadership. Now, how do we define a leader? Tell them that there are several leadership definitions, but for this course, we chose to use this: A leader is "a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal". A mnemonic for this definition would be 3P's - Person, People and Purpose. Ask as you discuss: Is leadership a position of office or authority? Or, is leadership ability in the sense that he is a leader because he leads? We all may know or hear of people who are in positions of leadership but who are not providing leadership. A position of office is no guarantee of leadership but it helps in the sense that a leadership position usually commands a listening ear from its people and that is a good starting point for anyone who desires to be a leader Activity (5 Mins) Spot the Difference Display Power point Slide 8 Spot the Difference look inwards. Purpose: The purpose of slide 8 is to lead participants into looking inwards on issues and deeper within themselves, when in need or search of leadership solutions. Explain that often times, we escalate issues to our superiors whereas, if only we assess the situation properly, looking inwards, we may just have solution to the issue. Note to the Trainer: Have some hints on the differences: 1. The two ties, 2. The book with the man in blue shirt, 5

Time, Slides and Materials Notes for the Trainer 3. The table, 4. The Fumigant s collar, 5. The painting on the wall of the man in suit, 6. The hanging on the wall behind the fumigant s head Explain that Imagine the time spent on looking for differences, and getting them. Solving leadership problems involve taking time to studying the problems, look at various options, learning to spot the differences and at the end, we arrive at the solutions. Explain to them that In most cases, that is what out uplink we do, whereas we expect them to have automatic answers at all times. We too can start to reason as our uplinks do, even though we are yet to get to their level. If we do these, then, we are ready to be from leading where we are. Display Power point Slide 9 Leaders or leaders? and Slide 10. Ask them to refer to their definition of leader as discussed in Slide 7. Define a Leader. Again, there are several definitions, but use this: A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example, so that others are motivated to follow him. This is a basic requirement. To be a leader, a person must have a deep-rooted commitment to the goal that he will strive to achieve it even if nobody follows him Compare with what participants have in their notes. Explain that The leader as defined above can and should not be exclusive to those at the top alone. We should recognize that a successful organization will need this leadership to be present at all levels. The explanation will lead into discussing Leadership differences The question in Slide 9 should now be answered. They are homonyms but not synonyms. There are "Big L" leaders and "small l" leaders. The problem is that the ones we most want are the small l types and they don't get quite the press of others. Use this to explain Slide 10. So, to put it in a nutshell: Leaders don't necessarily lead leaders aren't necessarily Leaders Leadership sometimes shows leadership but sometimes doesn't and there isn't a lot you can say or do leadership doesn't only reside in the Leadership End the Introduction by emphasizing the last point, Leadership doesn t only reside in the so called Leadership 6
