BACKUP & RECOVERY ARCHIVE REPLICATION RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SEARCH Key Benefits Consolidate data over thin WAN connections and expedite local recovery with multiple backup and recovery options. Save time and money by centralizing remote office protection, eliminating the need to use and manage tape at multiple sites. Improve protection, operational efficiency and simplify management by leveraging a central infrastructure of backup software and devices, and manage it with one trained team. Meet SLAs for protection and recovery without taking production systems offline by using continuous capture byte-level replication to maintain an up to date copy of your data at a second location for fast restore. Eliminate the risk of application corruption by using snapshots to create application consistent recovery points, enabling recovery of your file or application to a specific point-in-time. Securely protect and optimize WAN utilization by leveraging encryption, compression, bandwidth throttling and discrete replication to transfer unique, deduplicated data on a scheduled basis to a central location for secondary processing, such as archiving. Increase reliability and speed of recovery by maintaining a local online backup copy and by leveraging embedded deduplication for better retention and faster restore. CommVault Simpana Remote and Branch Office Protection Centralized Management and Rapid Data Recovery for Remote and Branch Offices The Business Challenge Data in remote or branch office sites requires the same type of protection, security and availability as data residing within the data center, and is subject to the same compliance requirements. Yet, it is often unreliably protected due to insufficient network bandwidth, a lack of trained IT staff at the remote sites and the high cost associated with hardware and maintenance fees. As data at the edge of your infrastructure continues to grow, your legacy data protection and management tools become less effective and more cost prohibitive hindering your ability to securely protect data and maintain business continuity. By some estimates, remote office data management accounts for 40 60 percent of a typical enterprise IT budget. As remote data continues to grow and the costs of managing it continue to rise, businesses must look for cost-effective solutions that simplify administration, increase data availability, improve use of storage, network, and resources and expedite disaster recovery. The CommVault Simpana Software Solution CommVault Simpana Software helps you protect Remote Office and Branch Office data (ROBO) reliably and cost-effectively. Whether you choose to perform backups at the remote site for local restore or to centralize backup operations over a WAN for distributed protection, CommVault software enables you to create secondary copies of production data quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, using a combination of host-based replication and snapshot technologies. These secondary copies of data can be immediately accessed for rapid recovery and used to create multiple recovery points or to perform traditional backups, without impacting server performance. Client-site deduplication enables you to remove duplicate data at the remote site before it is stored on disk or transferred across the wide area network, increasing the reliability, speed of recovery and minimizing consumption of available bandwidth. Data encryption, compression, bandwidth throttling and scheduled replication ensure data protection and further optimize the use of available network bandwidth. Remote and Branch Office Protection Options Centralize Remote Office Data Protection Over a WAN Managing remote office data has traditionally been expensive and problematic. Maintaining backup software and infrastructure in remote offices is costly; distracting remote office personnel with backup and tape rotation tasks is disruptive; paying an offsite services company to drive to each remote office and collect tapes is costly and inefficient. What if instead of protecting data remotely you could centralize it and protect it with your data center infrastructure? CommVault Simpana software enables you to cost-effectively centralize remote office backup and recovery of Windows, Linux and UNIX data. By using a single infrastructure of backup software and devices, CommVault software lets you efficiently leverage a single trained team of backup and recovery specialists and provide a central collection point for tape rotation. CommVault Simpana software ensures data coherency, recovery and ease-

Key Benefits (continued) Eliminate the risk and cost associated with offsite disaster recovery (DR) by replicating data and applications over a WAN to other physical or virtual sites. Reduce TCO by eliminating duplicate hardware at DR site, as well as offsite tape storage. Reliably protect and recover applications with consistent point-in-time images of application. Expedite recovery with online copy. Consolidate and automate data management across physical and virtual environments through a single console and empower end-users to recover their own files. Easily migrate data from physical to virtual, virtual to physical environments or from different storage platforms or storage tiers. Easily add capabilities for protection, archive, replication and snapshot recovery, all managed from the same Unified Console. of-management. The simple configuration of replication pairs makes it easy to establish a fan-in, many-to-one configuration, where multiple remote office locations replicate to a central location. This centralized approach helps reduce costs and increases the reliability of backup and recovery operations. CommVault Simpana software enables the centralization of Remote Office Data over a WAN using Continuous Capture Replication or Discrete Data Synchronization. Scenario 1: Continuous Capture Replication CommVault Simpana software provides continuous data protection by capturing data written by a server onto an attached disk (internal or external) in real time. Any disk that is mountable by the server can be seen and protected with CommVault Simpana software. CommVault software duplicates the I/O stream as it is written to the disk and then sends the data as fast as possible across the network to a second server system. Continuous data protection can also be leveraged in a Windows-based clustered environment for easy fail-over. CommVault Replication idata Agent is also deployed on the second server to capture the replicated I/O stream and then to apply that I/O stream to a duplicate copy of the data. This creates an up-to-date replica. The software inserts consistency markers in the replication log to enable the creation of application-consistent recovery point snapshots at the destination. CommVault Simpana software can maintain and dial back to multiple point-in-time snapshots for fast application recovery. Scenario 1: Remote Office Protection Featuring Client Site Deduplication. In this solution, a centralized, shared deduplicated secondary storage pool is presented as a network share to the Media Agent in the remote site. Optionally, a local deduplicated disk pool is also connected to the Remote Media Agent Simpana software protection and/or archive agents are deployed on remote office servers. Backup data is written to the local disk pool in deduplicated form. By enabling the inline option on the dedupe policy, at the same time, a second copy of deduplicated data is sent over the network share to the central storage pool. Since CommVault software s data mover-based deduplication process eliminates redundant data segments in memory and writes only unique segments to the backend, only unique segments are sent over the WAN to the central site. This occurs whether you are performing full or incremental backups. The data in the central site is immediately available for secondary processing and for moving to tape.

Key Capabilities Replicated Remote Office Backup Allows for a deduplicated backup at the remote site which is then replicated over to a central data site for secondary processing, DR and long-term archiving, without impacting the remote systems. Remote Office Backup with Client- Site Deduplication Inline backup with deduplication provides a local dedupe recovery copy at the remote site and at the same time creates a secondary backup copy at the DR site over WAN. Our Media Agent deduplication ensures that only changed data is transferred from the remote site to the data center. Scenario 2: Discrete Data Synchronization Remote offices often need to maintain local backups for fast recovery. They also need to create a disaster recovery copy of the backup at a central site. Since creating this copy over the WAN is usually not possible due to limited bandwidth, businesses are forced to ship tapes resulting in tape management and data security challenges. CommVault Simpana software addresses these challenges by combining the power of file deduplication with data replication. This eliminates redundant data from remote office backups and reduces backup Single Management Console footprint. The deduplicated data is replicated to the central site in a compressed format, making it possible to create a disaster recovery copy over a WAN with limited bandwidth. Furthermore, the disaster recovery copy can then be used for local and remote restore as well as secondary processing, such as encryption and vaulting to offsite tape, without impacting remote systems. As with Continuous Data Protection, encryption and compression can be enabled during the data transfer over WAN for additional security without impacting the size of the deduplicated data being transferred. Continuous Data Replication Allows disaster recovery copies of backup/archive data to be created over the LAN or WAN on a continuous basis. Discrete Data Replication Allows disaster recovery copies of backup/ archive data to be created over the LAN or WAN on a scheduled basis. Scheduled Bandwidth Throttling Optimizes available network resources by allowing administrators to match replication needs to available bandwidth. REMOTE SITE Local Backup and Recovery ida ida ida CDR MA REMOTE MEDIA AGENT Primary Recovery Instance Content Alignment PRIMARY TARGET READ/WRITE Content aware dedupe Data Replicator CENTRAL SITE REPLICATED DISK LIBRARY Replicated Pair Instance Content Alignment SECONDARY TARGET READ ONLY Encryption Aux Copy Remote Restore Content aware dedupe CDR MA CENTRAL MEDIA AGENT Scenario 2: Remote Office Protection Featuring Replicated Disk Library with Deduplication Unique Application Recovery Points Captures point-in-time snapshot-based images of replicated data and offers special application integration for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and Oracle data. This maintains application integrity and provides consistent recovery images behind the replica. Easy, Centralized Management of Operations Provides the industry s only Single Pane of Glass graphical user interface from which you can easily create, track, administer and manage replication along with backup, recovery and archive using a single policy engine. In this scenario, CommVault backup or archive agents are installed on remote office servers that are configured to backup and/or archive data to a remote Media Agent with a local deduplicated disk store. In the central site another Media Agent is configured with its own deduplicated disk store. A replicated disk library is configured between the two disk stores. CommVault Data Replicator agent is deployed on each of the Media Agents. When backup/archive operations are executed on the remote servers, the remote Media Agent writes only new or changed data segments to disk. Once the data is committed, the data replicator node transfers only the changed data segments over the WAN to the disk store in the central site. Once replicated, the data at the central site is instantly available for secondary processing at the central site via the central Media Agent. This is similar to using replication between two deduplication appliances. However, CommVault software s approach offers the advantage of having that data readily available at the central site. There is no need to transfer or restore catalogs on the central site to access the data. In the time it takes to replicate the changed data over the WAN, a DR copy is created and ready to use without any additional steps.

Perform Local Backup and Restore of Remote Office Data While Creating a Secondary Copy Over a WAN Using Client-Site Deduplication and Replicated Disk Library With exponential data growth and more and more business critical data residing in remote offices, it is imperative to bring all of this data under a central management system to ensure its availability for fast recovery at a moment s notice. In an effort to reduce this risk and management burden at remote sites, a growing number of businesses are eliminating tapes at remote sites and moving all backups to disk. While this resolves the tape management challenges, they are still left with the challenge of limited network bandwidth hindering their ability to consolidate all the remote office data to the central site over WAN. There is simply not enough bandwidth to move all the backups in the available time. What if you could leverage multiple options with deduplication to reliably and cost-effectively protect remote and branch office data? This enables them to retain more recovery points on disk for faster recovery while efficiently transferring unique, deduplicated data over a WAN to a central location on a scheduled basis for secondary processing, such as archiving. If tape is still part of your data protection strategy, CommVault software allows copies of data to be moved to tape in a compressed, deduplicated state to improve retention and reduce media costs. CommVault Simpana software s singular approach allows you to protect remote office data in the same way you would in the data center, from a central console, using a consistent set of policies. Deduplication optimizes recovery, disk savings and bandwidth efficiency. By writing only changed data to disk, deduplication helps reduce the backup footprint at the remote site making it much easier to move only the changed data over the WAN rather than a full backup set. Simpana software offers two solutions that leverage deduplication to help protect remote and branch office data and centralize it over thin WAN connections. When offices and data sets are larger, organizations can perform local backup to disk at the remote site and leverage client-site deduplication to remove duplicate data at the remote site before it is stored on disk or transferred across the wide area network. Integrate Data Management and Protection Remote office backup, whether performed locally or over a WAN, is only the first step in a comprehensive data protection strategy. Once copied to a secondary host, your data needs to be protected and managed through its lifecycle. All Simpana software modules are fully integrated. This enables you to leverage the backup module to automatically create backup sets of replicas at scheduled intervals based on policies you define. Additionally, when used in conjunction with the CommVault Data Archiver module, you can efficiently recover migrated remote office data without requiring offline files to be recalled. Maintain Uninterrupted Data Consistency When protecting data over wide area networks, network link failures can and will happen. The ability to gracefully recover from link failure is a key factor in protecting your remote office data. When links do fail, many data protection solutions require the administrator to perform manual comparisons of source and destination copy to determine what data was modified during the network outage. What if you could recover from network failures without performing manual data comparisons? CommVault Simpana software ensures that you can quickly return to a production state by carefully tracking all change activity during the network interruption and automatically bringing the replica up to a consistent state when network services are restored. CommVault software helps you deliver the high service levels critical to maintaining business continuity.
