YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING Spaces limited! Application Deadline is May 15, 2015. Do you like to spend your time outdoors, enjoy working with kids, or have an affinity for animals? Irvine Nature Center is seeking responsible youth leaders to volunteer for our Summer Nature Camp. Spend your time helping counselors deliver nature lessons, lead kids on hikes, and play fun games. The purpose of the training program is to provide leadership training for youth who love working with children in a camp environment and who are interested in future camp counseling. The program will provide youth leaders with hands on experience working with young campers and the opportunity to cultivate their skills & knowledge in the day camp setting and have a close involvement with the natural environment. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be at least 14 years of age by the start of camp. 2. Some camp experience in a day camp setting and working with children, ages 2-9 preferred. TIME COMMITMENT: 1. Must commit to at least four consecutive camp sessions. (June 15 th -August 21 st ) 2. Monday- Friday, Half day option 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or Full day option 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Attend camp training prior to opening of camp and any in-service training throughout the summer. 2. Assist counselors in all planned activities within assigned group. 3. Have reliable transportation. 4. Maintain program areas in a clean & neat manner. 5. Communicate any problems or questions to counselor or Camp Director. 6. Actively participate in all of the camp activities. 7. Follow all the appropriate guidelines established by Irvine Nature Center 8. Be alert at all times, keeping in mind that the safety of the program participants is your responsibility. 9. Develop a good working relationship with camp and Irvine staff. 10. Other related duties as assigned. COMPENSATION: 1. This is a volunteer position. Community service hours/internship hours given. 2. Valuable training for future camp, environmental and education-related employment. 3. Returning youth leaders are eligible to apply for the paid junior counselor position. However there is a certain amount of risk inherent in participating in any outdoor activity. I agree not to hold Irvine Nature Center and its employees responsible for any liability resulting from negligence on my part or others not employed by or representing Irvine. Furthermore, I agree not to hold Irvine Nature Center responsible for any expenses, claims, or losses over and above its equitable share of liability or for any amount in excess of actual economic damage. Student Service Contract Before beginning your work with Irvine, we ask that you read and understand the following statements, and sign in agreement with them. 1) I will respect the grounds of Irvine Nature Center and its students. 2) I will not use drugs or alcohol while on the grounds of the Center. 3) I will work to help the staff provide an atmosphere for education, and do what I can to preserve the beauty of our surroundings here so that others can enjoy them. Although the staff will work to provide a safe, clean work environment for me, I will act responsibly and notify a staff member at once if problems or unsafe conditions occur. 4) When scheduled to volunteer I will do my absolute best to be here. If for some reason I cannot come to Irvine when scheduled, I will notify the Center as soon as possible to that someone else can be called upon to work. 5) I understand that it is necessary for me to sign in and out of the Volunteer Log Book every time I volunteer. This log book will be the record of my volunteer hours, which is later entered in a computer file. It is my responsibility to complete any necessary paperwork for school credit for these hours. Any forms that need to be signed will be given to the staff with adequate time for completion. 6) I will not bring friends with me when I come to volunteer at Irvine. If my friends are interested in volunteering, they must contact the Volunteer Coordinator directly. 7) I understand that volunteering at Irvine Nature Center is a privilege. Any instances of disrespect I show for the rules, staff, equipment, or grounds will be treated in the following manner: one warning, call to parent or guardian, expulsion.
