News From The Drake House www.thedrakehouse.org February 2016 Neighbor 2 Neighbor Partners Mission Statement We our Neighbor 2 Neighbor Partners! What would we ever have done without these important partners as we created and implemented our Drake House program? From painting to furnishing an apartment, and dusting and vacuuming along the way, coupled with a monthly financial stipend to cover property insurance and utilities, to offering personal mentoring to every mom and each child! Thousands of hours of volunteer support, hundreds of trips to and from our activity center, many trips to the park, the library, playing games and reading, lifting families up and over their hurdles...for ten years! We have been truly blessed by many that have served as our N2N partners. Kathy Swahn Executive Director Our Families Monday Nights at The Drake House Our life skills program kicked off the new year with 2 lessons on organizational skills, taught by Marilyn Clinton, professional organizer and member of Quantum Leap who sponsored of the evening. Marilyn taught the moms time management techniques as well as a file system for important documents. Always a favorite class and good way to start 2016 on the right foot!! Matched Savings Program The single moms are now learning how to teach their children values. This is not the "how to" for parenting, but instead the "why". Values of Being and Values of Giving are discussed and include topics such as honesty, courage, self-reliance and self-discipline, and loyalty and dependability. Each family at The Drake House is required to save all income minus mandatory expenses for their move out needs. always a familiar concept, as usually there is not enough money to pay expenses, let alone save. Thanks to The Drake House Matched Savings Program, saving money has taken on a whole new meaning for these families.during the transition planning, outstanding apartment debt or utility debt must be paid before the family can secure housing or utilities in their name again. With ample funds in savings, the family can designate part of their savings to pay off debt, with that amount matched by The Drake House, and still have sufficient funds for their new apartment. That's what Sandra has done as she prepares for her next step. She contacted the collection agency where her previous landlord had sent her eviction, and negotiated a lesser settlement amount. Then she used the program match along with her earned savings to pay the debt in full. She can now apply to apartments with a clean slate, and plan for her debt free future with her daughter. This art show will be at a gallery in Atlanta in April and the teens will receive a portion of the sales of their artwork! Stay tuned for more information! Right now, the teen suite is filled with 7 teens that will participate in this new series that is being brought to us by Malika Whitely of Chop Art. I cannot say enough how grateful we are that so many of our community partners, volunteers and leaders care so much about our teen program and all that they give to support the teen's growth and development.
