Each semester all Music Majors and Minors who have not yet completed concert music must enroll in MUSC 200 or MUSC 300. (Enroll in MUSC 200 your first four semesters, and MUSC 300 any remaining semesters.) These are 0- unit courses, with credit/no credit grading. C. Concert Music must be treated like all other classes. Work and personal schedules must be arranged to meet requirements. All class conflicts must be resolved in advance through a signed waiver from the Concert Music Coordinator (Jessica). Textbook, Materials and Fees A. MUSC 200/300 Concert Music Course Syllabus, provided. B. 10x13 Concert Music Envelope, provided. Please keep and use this until all semesters have been completed. If your form gets lost you will need to pay $5 for a replacement. C. Money for concert tickets (plan on $35- $45 a semester). Concert Attendance Requirements A. You may not count concerts in which you perform. Exception: PRISM (In order to count PRISM you must have attended the entirety of the concert (except for the pieces in which you performed) and collected a program to turn in.) 3

B. You may count an outside major professional concert attended during the summer or inter- term immediately preceding the current semester (ex: counting a summer concert for the Fall semester of concert music). C. You may not stockpile performances, that is, go to 4 concerts one summer and use one per semester for the next 4 semesters. D. Each semester you must attend the following, and keep the programs to turn in as proof: 1. 7 Music at Noon Concerts (Wednesdays, 12:30-1:00 p.m.) No substitutes allowed. Note: as of Spring 2016 attendance will no longer be taken as backup. Be sure to keep your programs! 2. 7 Student Recitals (Thursdays, 9:30-10:30 a.m.) You may only substitute 3 (this means you must attend 4 Thursday morning recitals) with an area masterclass, departmental recital, or Jr./Sr. Recital (2 Jr. Recitals= 1 student recital credit) Note: as of Spring 2016 attendance will no longer be taken as backup. Be sure to keep your programs! 3. 4 Concert Series events, divided as follows: a. 2 Guest Artist Concerts - required concerts, no substitutions unless approved by the office in advance. If you are going to miss a required guest artist, the only way you can make it up is by attending an additional outside major professional concert. b. 1 Faculty Recital Concert Acceptable Substitutions: A similar faculty or guest artist recital from another 4- year university Professional concert outside the Conservatory c. 1 Conservatory Student Ensemble Concert (ex: the opera production, concerts by the Chorale, Symphonic Winds, Symphony Orchestra, Women s Chorus, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Ensembles, Composition Contest Concert) Acceptable Substitutions: Student ensemble concert from another 4- year university Professional concert outside the Conservatory 4. 1 MAJOR PROFESSIONAL Concert outside the Conservatory (see p. 7 for examples) This must include: a. 3 (2 for BA/BS/minor) Major Professional Orchestra concerts (see p. 7 for examples) b. 2 (1 for BA/BS/minor) Major Professional Opera productions (see p. 7 for examples) c. 2 (1 for BA/BS/minor) Your Choice Major Professional Concerts (see p. 7 for examples) This includes: Professional artist recital in your performance area Professional Orchestra Professional Chamber Music Ensemble Professional Opera Professional Broadway Touring Company Musical 4

E. Class Conflict Resolution 1. Only conflicts with a scheduled Biola course are eligible for a resolution waiver. 2. Waivers are only good for one semester. 3. Requests for waivers must be made in advance and in writing to be included in your file. 4. Take your written request to the Concert Music Coordinator so that a signed waiver and substitution schedule can be attached to your form. F. Make- ups: no make- ups are allowed after the submission due date. The only concerts you may attend after the due date are Jr. and Sr. Recitals. In this case you must record the future dates on your report form along with a note explaining which recitals you are planning to attend and turn in your packet on time. After you attend the recital(s) you must take your program to the office during the next business day and add it to your concert music packet. If you do not bring your program in after attending you will not receive credit. G. All special credits must come from the concert music coordinator via email (get it in writing!). Don t assume that your area coordinator checked before he/she told you that a concert would count. If you have questions ask the concert music coordinator, not your area coordinator. V. Concert Recording and Submission Procedures A. You are responsible for recording concerts attended and keeping a program as proof of attendance. B. Concert attendance should be recorded on the Attendance Report Form provided in the following manner: 1. Fill in a concert date in every space (a blank space = No Credit). 2. Collect a program, which will be proof of your attendance, from every concert attended, including student recitals. If you do not have your program, you may do the following: a. For lost concert series and outside concerts, staple your ticket stub to a half sheet of paper and use that in place of your program. b. For loss of both program and ticket stub, you may submit a written statement of program content, performers, and other pertinent details. (If you lose a program from a Music @ Noon or Student Recital, you will not receive credit. There is no back- up for these performances.) 3. Programs should be stacked in the same order as recorded on the Attendance Report Form, from the top down, and placed behind the report form, inside the 10x13 envelope. 4. Blue student recital programs should not be folded and the date must be visible. 5. Do not staple or paperclip your programs in groups. 6. Remove old programs from previous semesters. 7. If your envelope becomes ragged, you may use a new 10x13 white or manila envelope, but be sure to write your name in the upper right corner on the outside. Do not use any other kind of folder. C. The completed packet, with your name on the upper right corner on the outside, must be received in the Conservatory Office no later than 3pm on the Friday before Finals Week. It will be ready for pick up at the beginning of the next semester. D. Grading is given in the form of Credit/No Credit based on concert attendance. 5

Major Professional World- renowned orchestras or opera companies, usually located in major cities and areas. Examples: Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera Company, live New York Met operas broadcast to theaters in HD, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and the Orange County Pacific Symphony. Broadway musicals must be performed by a professional Broadway touring company, which usually only perform at venues like the Pantages Theater, Ahmanson Theatre, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, or Orange County s Segerstrom Hall. Productions at or by the following are NOT acceptable: church productions, La Mirada Performing Arts, La Mirada Vocal Arts, Cerritos Performing Arts Center, community music centers (Fullerton, etc.), Las Vegas show productions of musicals (they are shortened and spectacular productions). The following are NOT considered orchestra concerts: ballets or dance performances, circuses (that s right, someone tried it!), operas, productions or plays with music playing, small chamber ensembles, large but not full orchestra ensembles, church orchestras, soloists playing in a concert series sponsored by an orchestra, but no orchestra in sight (check before you by the ticket!). NOTE: Do not wait until the end of the semester to go to an outside concert. The concert season for most orchestra and opera companies will be over!
