OVERVIEW The role of the perioperative nurse in our advanced technological environment and the increased knowledge and acuity level of the patient has mandated that the nurse assume additional responsibility and accountability. This self-study activity addresses the use of critical thinking skills to solve problems, make decisions, and establish priorities in the perioperative setting. The problem solving process is a systematic approach that follows a logical progression of identifying and analyzing the cause of a problem and determining a solution. Seven keys to critical thinking are outlined as well as the steps in problem solving in the nursing process. These are all interlinked and set the stage for applying them to the clinical setting. Examples and exercises are provided to demonstrate the application of critical thinking skills. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this continuing education activity, the participant should be able to: 1. Describe the utility of the power of critical thinking in providing perioperative nursing care. 2. Differentiate the problem solving process, decision making, the nursing process and critical thinking skills process. 3. Demonstrate application of critical thinking by completing scenarios presented. INTENDED AUDIENCE This continuing education activity is intended for nurses and other health care personnel who are interested in refining the skills of critical thinking in the perioperative setting.
