for WGU Information Technologies Programs (201308) Western Governors University (WGU) is a competency-based institution of higher learning and handles transfer credit in a different way than most other colleges and universities. We believe that a student gains the foundations of competency in general education and some core courses in a major through their academic experiences and prior learning. Through our partnerships, WGU will award competency unit credit for credit hours earned in several ways. First, we will apply a requirement satisfied (RS) to the WGU general education core when the student has completed and received an associate-level degree. Secondly, the RS will be applied to lower-division core courses in the major when the student s associate degree major aligns with the WGU baccalaureate major. Finally, WGU will also apply transfer credit when students present courses that are equivalent in content to a WGU course and related competencies. Where courses from your institution are directly transferred, the course subject and number will be listed in the column(s). Regardless of the application of RS or transferred courses, WGU verifies competency in general education and core courses in the major through our rigorous upper-division courses. It is through this practice that WGU can offer a generous transfer policy to your students, as well as a simplified partnership agreement. The following tables represent three areas in which students may receive credit for prior learning: General Education, Additional Transfers in the Major and core courses in the major. The general education and core courses tables may receive the RS credit as defined in the previous paragraph. The additional transfers in the major table will only have credit applied through direct course transfer. Each column represents one of the degree programs offered at WGU. Each table contains the related WGU courses (course descriptions and codes are found in the first two columns of the tables) and its associated competency unit value (CU) (found in the third column of the tables). The corresponding CU value will be represented in the cells in the columns under the WGU degree program majors if the course exists within the program(s). Where there is NA in the cells, it simply means that particular WGU course is not applicable to the WGU degree program found at the top of the column. If a course(s) from your institution is transferred, the course subject and number will be listed in the cell beneath the CU value number of the WGU course and in the column of the related WGU degree program(s). If a specific course(s) is required in order for your student to receive WGU credit, the course subject and number will be listed and denoted with an asterisk. Otherwise, you will see the RS applied to the WGU course(s). Each table will have a subtotal of competency units awarded, and a credit summary and grand total of competency units awarded is found at the end of the document. Please review the following tables to see how credit will be applied for your students. Office of the Registrar
