Tom Ellett Candidate for Vice-President and for Director, Foreign Language Translators Who am I? Why am I running? Full-time translator in private practice for the past 20 years. The translation profession is changing, and ATIO needs to change with it. Certified Translator from Norwegian and Swedish to English. Immigrated to Canada from the UK in 2007. Joined ATIO and became certified that same year. Resident in Guelph, Ontario. Previously served on ATIO Board in 2012 13. Active participant in professional development and PR activities: conferences, workshops, webinars, online forums, social media. Organize monthly lunch meetings for translators and interpreters in the Guelph-Kitchener-Waterloo region. Over the past two decades as a microbusiness owner, I have been exposed to many of the economic changes and challenges taking place: globalization, outsourcing, crowdsourcing, uberization. I believe I can help ATIO be an effective voice for our profession in this debate. Foreign-language translators (those working in pairs other than French < > English) are a growing segment of the ATIO membership. Self-employed translators and interpreters now make up more than half the membership. ATIO s priorities and activities need to be more relevant to the majority of our members. Let them that pay the piper call the tune! For an organization of professional communicators, we are not good at communicating with our members and with the world at large. We need to fix that. If elected, I will urge the Board to carry out a strategic review of the Association s priorities and governance structures. How can we become more representative of the translation profession in Ontario? Website: www.albascan.com Email: tom@albascan.com Twitter: @tomellett

Anita Goela Candidate: Director, Independent Translators My name is Anita Goela. I live in Waterdown, which if you don't know is in Southwestern Ontario close to Hamilton and Burlington. I am running for the position of Director, Independent Translators because of my experience working as a freelance translator for translation agencies and the provincial and federal government. My goal is to be an active voice in the industry. I have participated in consultations with the Translation Bureau. I am also interested in raising the profile and value of certified translators. To that end, I have also joined several ATIO committees. I earned my translation degree from the University of Ottawa in 2008 and have been a certified French to English translator since 2012. In addition to my translation practice, I work for Legal Aid Ontario at the Brampton courthouse as a staff lawyer in family and criminal court.

Lisa Maldonado Candidate for Director, Independent Translators Lisa Maldonado is an independent translator and interpreter, working in the FR>EN and ES>EN language pairs. Born in Canada, Lisa has lived much of her life abroad in Belgium, France, Mexico and Guatemala. Lisa holds the French Baccalaureate and two diplomas from the Sorbonne, as well as an Honours B.A. in Spanish from the University of Guelph. She began translating sporadically in the 1990 s, became involved in community interpretation in 2008, and finally in 2011, committed to translation full time as a freelancer. Legal, business and agricultural texts dominate her work, but she also enjoys marketing and journalism texts, and would like to do more literary translation! She has been an ATIO Spanish to English Certified Translator since 2014 and is also a Candidate for Certification from French to English. Last year, Lisa joined the approved list of United Nations freelancers after succeeding in the language competitive exam. She is a co author of the quiz questions that go with the standard textbook used in introductory linguistics courses in Canada, An Introduction to Language, 4 th Canadian Edition. Lisa is a passionate organic gardener, cyclist, accordion player and Guelph International Jazz Fest volunteer. With her husband David, she manages the occasional meal with all 5 young adults in her blended family. Lisa developed a desire to become more active in ATIO when she served on the ATIO Certification Review Committee last year. She enjoyed connecting with and hearing from independent translators, and if elected as Director, Independent Translators, will continue to reach out to and reflect the concerns and needs of independents on the Board.
