Career A presents a scientific and technological-cultural-oriented approach for the engineering of the built environment and landscape management while Career B is based on a design-oriented approach for the same tasks. Of course these areas systematically cooperate, in order to pursue shared research objectives and support each other, but, for the sake of clarity and for an easier management, they have been split into the mentioned two Careers, each representing a feasible option to PhD students attending the PhD course, pending the jury's approval.

CAREER A The technologic and scientific challenges imposed by innovations, make more and more important the job of model-maker engineer, capable of working beyond the standard professional field and of coping with new and frontier issues according to customized approaches - at every level. More and more often also within fields traditionally far from the standard scientific approach, such as Architecture and Construction, the need for professional engineers able to model both single mechanical phenomena and interactions between mechanical or non mechanical phenomena is noted, whose final aim differentiates from the pure and aseptic perspective of automatic computation. That holds because many regulations oblige designers to afford new tasks and responsibilities, by means of analysis tools more and more sophisticated and thorough. In addition, exploitation of innovative materials, either developed from standard ones or completely new, and the erection of far challenging structures - made feasible by real technological development overtaking the past architectural-philosophical dissertations - brought to the attention of engineers new issues and new phenomena, often linked to the dynamic behavior of structures, for which education of new professional engineers able to cope with them in an adequate manner is required. The need to work out reliable models, to interpret their behavior, to quantitatively analyze the output, to assume numerical implementations and, finally, to experimentally validate the results, perfectly matches with the field of Structural and Infrastructural Engineering, which in its latest and productive developments was able to adapt the methodology traditionally used for structural analyses to the field of emerging technologies. Given what stated above, research topics included in Career A are summed up by the following: - research regarding structural mechanics and fluid mechanics, including nonlinear issues; - research regarding structural dynamics (with particular concern to the issues risen by slender structures) and hydraulics (with specific focus on the dynamics of natural water bodies) which are affected by phenomena only partially known or completely new; - research regarding material mechanics (of both conventional and innovative materials), with particular concern to stress-strain curves and experimental verification, regarding the material's macroscopic behavior, its micro-mechanical functioning and constitutive modeling; - research aimed at the development of advanced mathematical models for solving and representing phenomena, with particular concern to numerical analyses and solution finding approximation. Qualifying elements regarding this study and research career derive from classes, workshops and tutoring activities, and particularly from internationalization of the carrier and its development in delocalized locations (Industrial factories and Research Centers), able to add technological value to theoretical formulations. As far as concerns studying methodologies and research education, it is expected: - to provide PhD students with a valid basic education in mechanics; - to nurture their education in specific disciplines belonging to the aforementioned area, while favoring their link with other themes of the PhD course; - to favor the development of research activities and education through attending research projects of the involved Departments, and again research periods in foreign universities and Italian, European and international research centers; - to develop high quality PhD theses. The following research areas are explicitly linked to Career A: - Mathematical Physics - Structural Engineering - Material Engineering - Computational Mechanics - Structural Dynamics - Structure and Materials testing - Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics - Dynamics of Infrastructures - Road design and construction technologies

CAREER B The evidence that urban and rural territories, when intended both according to their literal meaning and as a wide research area, cannot be analyzed without taking into account their complexity, has been accepted only recently within the engineering, architectural and economic fields. Research objectives include giving a contribution to knowledge improvement, to be intended as a complex set of ideas which join, interweave, hook one another, self-adjust, self-defend, self-reproduce and spread (E. Morin). Such concepts, provided that they are valid for every discipline, is particularly true for those ones connected to the built environment, which can easily shift towards human centered humanism, putting together economics and ecology, urbanism with economics and territorial planning. The capability itself to discern the mistakes deriving from considering urban and rural environment as a mere object of analysis and management, provides the key concept for interpreting the themes proposed by this carrier option, which can be summed up as follows: - research for technology innovation in the field of building construction and restoration (whose purpose is environmental and technological quality improvement and control) with methodological and instrumental reference to the strategy of environmental and energetic sustainability; - research for manufacturing and management process innovation referred to construction firms and public administration working in the mentioned fields; - research for innovation of planning techniques, economic and environmental scheduling and evaluation - research for cooperation, sustainable development and territorial identity preservation. Distinguished elements to this carrier of the PhD course will descend from: - the constant and operational cooperation with the most skillful and efficient manufacturing institutions of the field in Italy and abroad; - the constant and shared collaboration with Italian and foreign research centers in the mentioned fields; - the opportunity to apply to important research projects at International level; - the constant and operational collaboration with Italian (UNI) and international (ISO and CEN) institutions of legislation in the field of quality management for construction; - the collaboration with public administrations working in the field of public works and real estate management, even through the mediation of other PhD students; - the creation of a permanent working group between partner universities, in order to promote and implement joint programs for higher education. As far as concerns study methodologies and research training, it is expected: - to provide PhD students with basic training skills, equally valid for all of them, taking into account their education, which generally contemplates building engineering, civil engineering and architecture; - to provide educational skills in the basic issues of the interested areas (technologic design, building construction, manufacturing process management, existing building stock restoration and management, economics, real estate assessment and environmental planning); - to favor the development of research activities and advanced training through joining ongoing research projects in the involved Departments and spending research periods in foreign universities and Italian, European and international research centers; - to develop high-quality PhD theses. The following research areas are explicitly linked to Career B: - Building Construction - Architectural and Urban Design - Technology of Architecture - Environmental surveying - Thermal and acoustic physics - Economics and property assessment - Industrial design - Restoration - History of Architecture - Drawing

Educational Goals The goal common to both Careers, which is also the main one, is to accurately teach the correct research methodology, to supply instructions about the correct scientific approach, and to be able to cope with technological, cultural and legislation issues. In both Careers, involvement in research projects already active in the field will be used for further enrichment, which avails himself of a well-planned basic teaching, for acquiring needed methodological tools, necessary to cope with the pertaining complex and various research issues. CAREER A Educational goals of Career A arise from the awareness that only professional engineers qualified to understand first and then solve complex issues and phenomena, applying only later and consciously automatic computational resources, will be able to cope with the global challenges of technological and scientific innovation. Hence, the teaching purpose consists in educating researchers, in order to be able to catch the main features, even interdisciplinary, of mechanical issues and of mechanical or structural interactions, to provide correct mathematical modeling within the needs rising from technological and environmental reality, and to use them in order to foresee structural behavior and environmental dynamics, while optimizing its performances and interpreting experimental tests, when available. Such a professional figure is already highly appreciated abroad, especially in the English culture, and will be of course more and more looked for also in our country. CAREER B Educational goals of Career B arise from the awareness that both specialized companies (constructions firms, materials and precast components producers, public and private service companies) and public administrations, are not able to easily find out adequate professional engineers for typical managerial positions. Within the actual international and globalized context, managers able to promptly interpret organizational important innovations are still missing, despite their presence in other fields. The teaching purpose is to prepare researchers able to acquire, develop and, possibly, innovate paradigms and contents in research fields typical of one or more interested disciplinary fields. All that to the aim of carefully examining and widening the disciplinary contexts themselves and bring about contributions for the development of professional tools of the operators in the field.

Professional and academic carrier options The professional figure produced by this PhD course is a highly-qualified professional man to be engaged in strategic positions on the market, but other complementary and specific roles are equally valid. The background acquired abroad places each PhD student in a competitive international scenario, where he/she can be accepted both by existing foreign institutions (e.g. companies, engineering association, international research centers, foreign universities etc.) and by Italian institutions pointing towards an international involvement, which can use the expertise of the PhD fellow as a starting point for their professional achievement or establishment abroad. CAREER A Several different profiles, among which the following ones, are included: - highly-qualified professionals, destined to be enrolled as managers or in charge of offices within Engineering Italian and international associations; - highly-qualified professional, destined to be enrolled as managers or in charge of offices within consulting associations, in the field of Civil, Building, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering; - highly-qualified professionals, destined to be enrolled in research and development divisions of industries working in the field; - highly-qualified researchers, destined to operate as research project leaders, within institutions and public and private research centers; - researchers suitable to be enrolled within universities, in both national and international areas; - professional engineers capable of sustaining managerial positions in public ruling and monitoring offices (e.g. Civil Engineering Department, UNI etc..). - CAREER B Several different profiles, aimed at the formation of many professional figures, are foreseen: - highly-qualified technical and managerial professionals, capable of coping with project-management issues within construction firms, materials and precast components manufacturers, and in service societies among which, mainly, engineering associations; - highly-qualified technological professionals, capable of coping with tasks related to project managers within engineering associations, and, moreover, within manufacturers in the materials and precast components production field, as expert of technology innovations completely aware of issues and market needs, while being updated from the technological points of view; - highly-qualified professionals, destined to be enrolled as internal organizational system managers for environmental quality management (ISO 14000 or EMAS) within private and public institutions; - highly-qualified professionals, destined to be enrolled as managers within public administrations or high level officers, engaged in highly strategic scheduling tasks and construction management, environmental and urban management, planning and scheduling; - highly-qualified researchers, destined to operate as project chiefs for research and control activities, within institutions or private and public research centers (including universities); - freelance work, positions of high responsibility in public and private institutions, professional studios, and design societies, operating in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and construction. In addition, other professional carriers highly specialized in the following fields are foreseen: - renovation and rebuilding of the existing building stock and monuments, urban renewal and valorization of buildings, maintenance and restoration of building elements and materials; - design and execution of diagnostic analyses on existing building stock, in relation to the knowledge phase regarding the buildings interested by intervention; - urban, territorial and environmental structures analysis, with reference to their restoration, to their valorization and requalification.
