POLARIS OPTICAL TRACKING SYSTEMS

FROM A WORLD LEADER IN NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY The Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra optical tracking systems from NDI are based on over 30 years of advanced 3D measurement tracking technology, providing exceptional customization and integration into the world s most progressive medical OEM computer-assisted surgery and therapy systems. POLARIS IS THE CORE TECHNOLOGY INSIDE THE WORLD S LEADING COMPUTER-ASSISTED SURGERY AND THERAPY SYSTEMS. THE POLARIS FAMILY OF PRODUCTS OVER 20,000 INSTALLATIONS WORLDWIDE The Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra enable accurate real-time 3D position and orientation tracking of passive or active markers attached to medical instruments and tools used in computer-assisted surgery (CAS) and computer-assisted therapy (CAT). Markers are tracked within a defined measurement volume that provides optimal anatomical visualization and navigation for a broad range of procedures: neurosurgery, orthopaedics, spinal surgery, and more. Both optical tracking systems provide best-in-class measurement accuracy to help ensure the most accurate positioning of surgical tools and/or the patient during procedures. Multiple surgical tools (and markers per tool) can be simultaneously tracked for enhanced operative workflow. The result is minimized invasiveness and improved patient outcomes through reduced surgical complications. The Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra continue to elevate the capabilities of optical tracking technology, providing unsurpassed measurement accuracy and reliability for integration into the most sophisticated computer-assisted surgery and therapy systems in medicine. SYSTEM FEATURES With its many advanced features, the Polaris Spectra sets the standard in optical tracking systems. The flexibility and reliability of this system make it ideal for cross-platform applications and applications requiring a very large measurement volume. With its exceptional accuracy and small footprint, Polaris Vicra expands the possibilities for new and exisiting computer-assisted surgery and therapy applications requiring a small measurement volume. Exceptional accuracy Robust and reliable Positioning laser (Polaris Spectra) Short warm-up time Accurate within a wide temperature range Maintenance and diagnostic utilities Bump detection capabilities Compliant with medical safety standards

NEUROSURGERY Provides real-time measurement data for patient-to-image registration Tracking of surgical instruments to confirm and facilitate steps to avoid critical anatomy Enhanced visualization reduces cranial openings and procedure times Surgeons can monitor their progress as compared to the preoperative plan ORTHOPAEDICS Enables the consistent placement of implants in knees and hips with smaller incisions and less blood loss Attaching markers to limbs assists in the visualization of the implant fit and provides data to assess long-term performance of the implant Tracking of arthroscopic instruments provides enhanced visualization of joint surfaces to determine joint surface wear SPINAL SURGERY Tracking surgical tools and therapeutic instruments improves performance in spinal fusion, spinal screw insertions and other pain control procedures TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION Positioning of the magnetic field emitter can be done quickly and repeatedly over several sessions to reduce patient discomfort and treatment time Passive marker tracking reduces the number of cables attached to patient RADIATION THERAPY Accurate patient positioning prior to each treatment Patient position monitoring during treatment Enables real-time adjustments during treatment Tracking of imaging devices, e.g. ultrasound, enhances patient positioning and monitoring of tumour progression ENT SURGERY Enables patient to image registration using real-time tracking via bite-block reference frames Tracking of surgical instruments during endoscopic sinus surgery assists in the avoidance of various facial nerves and critical vascular structures DENTAL SURGERY Tracking of the jaw provides accurate drilling and preparation for implants while avoiding nerves and other critical structures Registration with pre-operative CT enhances the surgeon s visibility and improves performance PET IMAGE STUDIES Tracking of patient motion enables image correction during PET procedures MEDICAL TRAINING SYSTEMS Tracking of simulated instruments in virtual environments Quantification and evaluation of surgeon motion and evaluation of trainee performance Closes the loop for real-time haptic feedback in simulator systems MAXILLO-FACIAL SURGERY Provides accurate alignment for mandible reconstruction and cleft pallet NDI POLARIS FAMILY OF PRODUCTS

SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION POSITION SENSOR Emits infrared light for passive tracking and also detects marker positions and calculates transformations of tools and 3D positions of individual markers. POLARIS SPECTRA The flexibility and reliability of this system make it ideal for cross-platform applications and applications requiring a very large measurement volume. POLARIS VICRA With its exceptional accuracy and small footprint, Polaris Vicra enables existing and new computer-assisted surgery and therapy applications requiring a small measurement volume. HOST USB CONVERTER The Host USB Converter is common to both the Passive Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra systems. The Host USB Converter provides a communication link and power for the Position Sensor. SYSTEM CONTROL UNIT (SCU) The SCU is used with the Hybrid Polaris Spectra. It provides the interface between the Position Sensor, strobers, tools and the host computer. Up to three active marker tools can be connected to the SCU. There is also a general purpose input/output (GPIO) port for connecting other devices such as a foot switch. An expansion port allows for connection of a strober. A synchronization port also exists for systems requiring precise timing. STROBER An optional accessory for the Hybrid Polaris Spectra which allows you to connect three additional active marker tools plus a GPIO port. Its portability allows tools to be connected closer to the working environment. The Hybrid Polaris Spectra can support up to two strobers.

MARKERS, TOOLS & ACCESSORIES Both the Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra systems produce measurement and location data based on the design and placement of markers on a tool. Development tools and accessories are offered for both systems as part of a tool kit or as individual parts. Call NDI for more details. CONFIDENCE IN ACCURACY In computer-assisted surgery applications, having confidence in the accuracy of the measurement system is essential. The Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra Position Sensors are designed to withstand a high level of shock, and still produce reliable and accurate measurement data. If a shock occurs of a magnitude that may compromise accuracy, a bump sensor triggers and alerts the user. Additional confidence in accuracy is provided with the Accuracy Assessment Kit (AAK). The AAK consists of an accuracy assessment tool and associated software that enables quick and easy in-field accuracy assessment of the Position Sensor. The combined hardware and software solution guides you through the entire measurement volume and provides you with a pass or fail report. ACCURACY ASSESSMENT An accuracy assessment procedure can be performed in under 15 minutes. SOFTWARE The NDI Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra systems come complete with the NDI ToolBox software and an application program interface (API). NDI TOOLBOX NDI ToolBox is a suite of utilities for diagnostics, maintenance, testing and development support for the Polaris Spectra and Polaris Vicra systems. Application Program Interface (API) The API follows the proven and well accepted Polaris API. The API enables easy system integration into your specific applications. NDI 6D Architect NDI 6D Architect is a software tool that simplifies the tool characterization process and the creation of tool definition files. The program makes it easy to transform and manipulate information, including the view, orientation and renaming of the markers within the 6D Architect main window. TOOL DEVELOPER KIT NDI offers an optional Tool Developer Kit containing the software, hardware and documentation you need to design and build your own tools. NDI POLARIS FAMILY OF PRODUCTS
