We are currently applying to become an ECOCERT certified company. We also use raw ingredients that we have sourced directly from local communities who use traditional farming and processing methods. They do not use chemicals or intensive farming techniques. Where they harvest from the wild, their harvesting practices are intrinsically sustainable, often utilising tools and methods that have been used in the local communities for generations. Processing Our organically certified essential oils are steam distilled rather than using chemical distillation. These powerful oils are used in the optimum amount in each formulation to provide maximum benefit. Our vegetable oils are cold pressed, which retains all the natural goodness of each oil. Ila products contain beneficial aloe vera juice instead of water wherever possible. Our aloe vera juice is produced using a spray drying method (instead of chemical extraction) which allows the beneficial properties of the plant to be retained.
Animal Friendly Ila has never and will never test on animals and does not use any raw ingredients that have been tested on animals. None of our ingredients are of animal origin except beeswax and royal jelly. All ila products are suitable for vegetarians. No chemicals Ila products contain no artificial additives or synthetic chemicals, enhancers or stabilisers. We believe an orange is best eaten fresh, and we apply the same philosophy to our products. Our natural ingredients are effective because they are exceptionally pure. At the same time, they conform to the highest standards of laboratory testing and analysis to ensure safety. Our approach blends ancient wisdom and knowledge and modern scientific research and techniques to ensure the efficacy of each ila skincare product. Natural Preservatives All ila preservation systems are naturally derived and based on aniseed, cinnamon and balsam. By using only natural preservatives, we ensure that the beneficial effects of the natural ingredients are not compromised by synthetic preservation systems. Ila products do have a shorter shelf life (12 months unopened and 6 months once opened if used correctly with lids firmly replaced after use) than luxury skincare products which use artificial means to offer durability. However, by using natural preservative systems, we avoid any possible health risk from artificial preservatives. Patch Testing and Allergies All ila skincare products are formulated to be extremely gentle and are used by many people with sensitive skin. Nevertheless, we do recommend a patch test is carried out at least 24 hours before first application for your peace of mind. The easiest place to patch test is the inside of the elbow. We note that many of our products use nut derived oils such as Argan oils and therefore may not be suitable for those with nut allergies. Earth Care We try to be as environmentally responsible as possible and are continually looking for ways to minimise our effect on and work in alliance with the natural world. Below are just a few of the varied ways in which we try to be environmentally aware. At home, we use eco-friendly power from Ecotricity as our power source and minimise our mileage by keeping our offices, production and R&D departments and training facility at a single location in the Cotswolds. We obtain our raw ingredients from sustainable and ethical sources and are proud of our transparent supply chain. We obtain packaging from sustainably managed sources and are clear about whether it is realistically recyclable. We work directly with farmers who grow organically and harvest sustainably and we support local projects that ensure the future of these farmers and their communities. Packaging We aim to adopt packaging solutions that are eco-friendly where possible. It is important to us that our packaging information is completely accurate and so we set out in this section exactly what is genuinely recyclable. At present, ila packaging has the following recyclable elements: Outer packaging: this is always card from sustainably managed forests which is fully recyclable. Inner packaging: the products are packaged in glass containers treated with an organic spray and are fully recyclable. Our plastic lids are polypropylene which is also fully recyclable in the UK. Where our lids are made from urea, this is not currently recyclable under the UK recycling systems (although it is recyclable in theory). We intend to make any future plastic packaging entirely biodegradable.
The Beyond Organic Foundation The ila directors are in the process of establishing a charitable foundation called The Beyond Organic Foundation to continue our work in supporting ethical partnerships with communities across the globe. ila actively supports organic and ethical farming and harvesting by building relationships with local producers and encouraging the continuation of traditional and sustainable practices. We work with the local communities to understand how to ensure that their way of life will continue to be sustainable in the face of climate change, mass produced synthetic alternatives and commercial pressure from large buyers. All of our major growers are in contact with us and we take every opportunity to meet with them and learn about what they are growing, how they are growing it and what benefits they are bringing to their environment and community. We continue to be elated at the number of people worldwide working with such integrity and awareness.
