This course is intended to eventually fulfill an Alaska Native or Multicultural Education course for Alaska teacher certification purposes to do this it would need to be DEED approved. A minor change will follow to replace ANTH 200.

The designator ANS does not yet exist in the UAS catalog, but does exist at UAF and has been offered at UAS as special topics. It was noted that the first line of rationale contained a grammatical error and needed to be restructured and the course description needs work. The last SLO needs to be refined, it is not measureable. Urquhart agreed to contact L. Twitchell to make the necessary changes to SLO s. The requested changes will need to be submitted one week before the next meeting. Subject to edits in the rationale, improved course description, and a fixed final SLO; B. Urquhart moved to pass first reading. M. Trafton seconded. The motion conditionally passed first reading without 16-06 BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 21:01) The proposal changes all subject designators from Government (GOVT) to Political Science (PS) to conform with UAA and UAF, and to change the BA Social Science primary and secondary Government concentrations to Political Science concentrations. Line 3 of the course description needs to be more definitive, such as this class explores. All references to GOVT need to be changed to PS. It was noted that the SLOs needed to be completely reworked, B. Urquhart will give suggested revisions and work with the proposers to fix these. Glenn agreed to rework the course description and e-mail to Barbara. Alaska Native Studies and Languages needs to be changed to Alaska Native Languages and Studies to match the course designator. The motion passed first reading without 16-08 BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 40:45) The proposal seeks to define the role of ANS 460 (Proposal 16-07) in the BLA Alaska Native Languages and Studies emphasis area and minor, and in the degree requirements for the BA Social Science primary and secondary emphasis in Government/Political Science. It was noted that references to GOVT should be changed to PS. Referenced course numbers need to have a leading S to designate Southeast. This is subject to the conditional approvals of 16-05 & 16-07. B. Urquhart moved to pass first reading subject to indicated changes. H. Pearson & R. Brewer seconded. The motion passed first reading without

16-09 BA Social Science Category A Curriculum Change (tape count 45:11) The proposal will remove the GER GOVT 230/PS 230 from UAS general education requirements and replace it with GOVT 202/PS 202. This was reviewed simultaneously with proposal 16-25. It was noted that the wording should mention this will be cross listed in the course description with SOC 351. The motion passed first reading without

16-22 PS 467 Latin American Politics Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 1:15:45) After being offered as a special topics course several times, PS 467 is being proposed as a regular course offering. It was noted that the course description needed revision. It was noted that there were three very detailed sentences that need to be moved to the syllabus and left out of the course description, the course description needed to be more general. The committee suggested that 1, 2, 3 be taken out, as it will not read well in the new catalog format. Glenn agreed to revise the course description. B. Urquhart will assist with revision of learning outcomes. B. Urquhart moved to pass first reading subject to revisions of course description and SLO s. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed first reading without 16-23 SOC 305 Sociology of Food Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 1:23:00) After being offered twice as a well-attended current issues course, the proposal seeks to make SOC 305 a permanent course offering and will satisfy upper division SOC requirements for the BLA and BA Social Science degrees. Also (3+0) will be added to the credit requirements. B. Urquhart moved to pass first reading subject to receipt of an editable pdf. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed first reading without 16-24 SOC 345 Education and Society Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 1:33:12) After being offered twice as a well-attended special topics course, the proposal seeks to make SOC 345 a regular course offering and is planned to be used as a current issues course in fall 2016. (3+0) needs to be added to the credits at the top of the proposal. It was noted that an editable PDF needs to be submitted. S needed to be added before course number 380 to designate as a Southeast course. B. Urquhart moved to pass first reading subject to receipt of an editable pdf. M. Trafton and C. Hassler seconded. The motion passed first reading without

16-27 ENVS 302 Glaciology Category B New Course Proposal (tape count 1:40:55) This course will replace GEOL 310 Glaciation and Climate Change and will serve as an elective for BS Environmental Science and BS Geography. There was a question as to the clarity of the prerequisites, it was determined MATH S152 would need an and before it. H. Pearson agreed to clarify the prerequisites before second reading. Minor grammatical errors were fixed during the meeting. H. Pearson moved to pass first reading subject to verification of the prerequisites and grammatical changes. A. Jones seconded. The motion passed first reading without 16-28 BS Environmental Science Category B Curriculum Change (tape count 1:47:10) Although the total number of required credits will remain the same, the proposal seeks to reduce the number of major requirements from 48 to 38 credits, introduce two new concentration areas, require 8 Quantitative and Spatial Analysis credits, remove 20 credits of Breadth Requirements, and change electives from 12 to 20 credits. These changes are result of a recent Environmental Sciences Program Review. There were questions about the course number 375 and whether this is always a special topics course that includes specific topics related to a specific program or if it should be broadened to include all topics in ENVS.
