Chapter 1 Introduction

1. Introduction Accessing devices and services in Internet is done by using addresses made up of numbers which are not easy for people to either remember or handle. Using Domain Name System (DNS) means that chains of text, which are more meaningful, can be associated to the said IP addresses. DNS is based on server consultations which then translate these texts into IP addresses. Information from these servers, until recently, could be considered as quasistatic in the sense that it only changed as a result of registers or de-registers and specific changes. Given the enormous growth of Internet, there soon arose the problem of the lack of free public addresses. In order to solve this, these addresses were reused as far as possible. This growth has been produced in the commercial market place and more significantly in domestic use. From the point of view of DNS, these changes implied an increase in the use of servers, an increase in the number of domain names and servers being used and an increase in the exchange of associations between hostnames and IP addresses. In order to tackle this problem, companies such as DynDNS (www.dyndns.com) have emerged offering DNS services in a set of own domains with the advantage that they offer free hostnames for private users and permit dynamic updating mechanisms. DNS dynamic updating is particularly useful for SMEs and domestic environments where the IP address supplied by the access provider changes from connection to connection or even in the middle of this. These changes are the result of the service provider adjusting prices: the access cost could rise significantly if the service gives a fixed public address. By using DNS dynamic updating services, you can access devices under these circumstances using a known hostname without worrying about the changes in the IP address that can arise due to the service provider. DNS dynamic updating can be carried out complying with the IETF standard or through protocols based on HTTP. These protocols are based on simple commands that specify the changes to be carried out as well as authentication information to verify that whoever is making this change is authorized. DynDNS uses a proprietary protocol based on HTTP, and supplies information and programs that allow you to use their dynamic updating characteristics for personal computers. This information has been used so that the Teldat routers can update hostnames in DynDNS. For further information on this protocol, please see the appropriate webpage: www.dyndns.com. Teldat Routers support this protocol. 1.1. DNS-UPDATER and NAT One specific case is where the router wants to access using a hostname and is behind an access router running NAT. This device is accessed through Internet configuring visible ports in the access router. In this case the IP address publicized with the DNS-Updater is the access router s public IP address and not the IP address of the interface for the router going to be configured this has a private address. The problem lies in how the router, being configured, can find out the access router s public IP address. One solution is to implement mechanisms in the router to determine the access router s IP address and consequently it is this router which is updated. Obtaining the IP address is based on HTTP requests to known servers which return the received petitions source IP address in the HTTP response. Teldat routers implement this possibility and allow you to configure the checking rate for the said public IP address among other possibilities. TELDAT ROUTER DNS Updater Introduction I - 2

1.2. DNS-UPDATER AND DIAL INTERFACES The DNS-Updater feature is configured to publicize/update the IP address for an interface. If this interface is not active, updating does not occur. In cases of DIAL interfaces such as PPP or FR, this means that while these are not active, traffic from the DNS-Updater is not sent. Consequently DNS-Updater traffic doesn t active these interfaces. Chapter 2 Configuration

1. Accessing the configuration To access the DNS-Updater feature configuration enter the FEATURE DNS-UPDATER command in the main configuration menu. Config>feature dns-updater -- DNS UPDATER configuration -- DNS UPDATER config> TELDAT ROUTER DNS Updater Configuration II - 5

2. Configuration commands The following table summarizes the DNS-Updater feature configuration commands. These commands are explained in more detail further below. Command Function? (HELP) Displays the configuration commands or the subcommands options. ENABLE Globally enables the feature. ENTRY Configures the data needed to update an interface s IP address given by a DNS service provider. NO Deletes the indicated element, consequently the parameter takes the default value. PARAM Configures the common feature parameters for all the entries. 2.1.? (HELP) Displays the list of the available commands. Example: DNS UPDATER config>? [NO]ENABLE Permits you to globally enable the DNS-Updater feature. So that every configured entry is operative, the feature must be globally enabled. Default is disabled. All data referring to the same entry has the same identifier. This value is between 1 and 99. By default no entry has been defined. Disables the entry. The entries are disabled until all the required parameters have been configured to operate. These parameters are: updater protocol, interface whose IP address is published through the DNS-Updater feature, hostname, servername and the user data (user name and password). Interface whose IP address is publicized/updated through the DNS- Updater feature. This IP address is associated to the hostname registered with the DNS services provider. In cases where you have a device running NAT, this address is ignored and the IP obtained through the mechanisms described in the EXTERNAL-IP command is used. Protocol used to update the association IP address-hostname. The only protocol supported is the DynDNS protocol. Traffic used in HTTP is through port 80. Specifies that the updater protocol is that provided by the DynDNS company (for further information, please see their webpage: www.dyndns.com). For the DynDNS supplier, this specifies the updating method or how the IP address is managed according to the criteria of the DynDNS company. By default, no method is defined. The IP address is dynamic, i.e. one likely to undergo changes and requires frequent updating. The IP address can be static or dynamic and the DNS management can be remotely executed by the client. Hostname associated to the publicized/updated IP address. The hostname belongs to one of the domains defined by the DNS provider. Address the updates are sent to. This is specified through a DNS hostname. For DynDNS this is members.dyndns.org although we recommend that you check their webpage to see if there are any changes. In order to subscribe to the DNS provider service you need to have a user name and a password. This data is used when updating the IP address. The password is always shown ciphered. ciphered-pwd password Configures a ciphered password Configures a clear password externl-ip enable server time Configures the change check mechanisms for the public IP address for the device running NAT, behind which the device you are configuring is located. By default, no parameters are configured. The address is obtained through an HTTP query so the public IP address is received in the response. Enables the public IP address check for the device running NAT. By default this is disabled. Address for the server returning the public IP address used by the device running NAT. Based on what is returned, the device determines whether there are changes or not. This is specified through a DNS hostname. DynDNS in this case, offers a server which is available through address checkip.dyndns.org, although we recommend that you check their webpage to see if there are any changes. Time period used to check for possible changes to the public IP address for the device running NAT. This admits values between 10 and 60 minutes. Default is 10 minutes. For reasons regarding overload and protection against attacks, the servers providing this service do not permit a high query rate. In cases regarding DynDNS, this does not support a query rate higher than every 10 minutes. Configures the rate at which changes to the IP address for the configured interface is checked, and the maximum time this IP address can be without being updated with the DNS service provider. Please bear in mind that the DNS service providers restrict the number of updates to a minimum in order to avoid overloads and attacks on the service. Configure this parameter so that it adjusts to the requirements imposed by the provider you are using. b) [NO] PARAM FORZED-UPDATE Configures the maximum time that the device can be without updating the configured entries. DNS UPDATER config>param forzed-update <days> <1..30> Time in days Admits values between 1 and 30 days. Default is 25 days. DynDNS recommends updating the entry every 28 days so it doesn t expire. 2.6. EXIT Permits you to the DNS-Updater feature configuration console and access the device s general configuration prompt. 2. Monitoring commands The following table describes the available monitoring commands. Command Function? (HELP) Displays the monitoring commands or the subcommands options. CLEAR Deletes the DNS-Updater feature statistics for one or all the entries. LIST Displays the status and statistics for all the configured entries. UPDATE Permits you to force updating for one or all the defined entries. EXIT Exits the feature monitoring menu. 2.1.? (HELP) Displays the monitoring commands or the subcommands options. This is the response DynDNS gives for the latest updating. Secondly this displays the last updating date and the IP addresses the interface has and which one was used in the latest updating for each entry. In cases where the device is behind a router running NAT, these are different. The next block shows the successful and failed DNS petition statistics, the number of successful and failed checks on the IP address for the router running NAT and the number of successful and failed updates for each entry. These statistics can be deleted through the CLEAR command. Finally this shows the change checking rates and the maximum time allowed without being updated. 2.4. UPDATE Permits you to force updating for one or all of the enabled entries. If an error occurs in the process (such as any error in DNS resolution on the hostnames used) an error message is shown. 2. Router behind a device running NAT The router to be configured is behind an access router running NAT. Due to this, the public IP address check for the said router is configured using the service provided by DynDNS (chekip).
