Research Profile My primary research goals are directed toward investigation of mechanical properties of advanced ceramics and prediction of reliability of ceramics components. Reliability of advanced ceramics includes characterization through experimental testing of advanced ceramics, numerical analysis with different commercial tools (e.g. Finite Element Method, Distinct Element Method), investigation of failure behavior (i.e. toughening mechanisms, fractography etc.). I attended wide range of lectures related to continuum mechanics, computational mechanics and modeling of materials (elastic, elasto-plastic) at small and large strains and discretization and homogenization methods. In my master thesis, I investigated the mesh-size dependence of strain softening of elasto-plastic materials. My graduate study at Stuttgart University provided me experience in modeling and characterization of different types of materials. During my dissertation, I had opportunities of measurement of mechanical properties (e.g. strength, toughness) in the laboratories and apply numerical models for the computation of failure probability of ceramic components. By combining the experimental results with numerical models, we investigated the multiaxial failure of alumina ceramics and published the results in Journal of the European Ceramic Society. During my employment at Zirve University, I made research mostly on statistical characterization of experimentally measured strength distribution of advanced ceramics and investigation of effects of material based parameters (e.g. toughening, phase transformation) and production based parameters (e.g. sintering temperature) on strength distribution of advanced ceramics. I investigated in one of my articles with my colleagues the effect of sintering temperature on mechanical properties of ceramic compression springs. In another study, by using the Finite Element Method and program STAU, I provided general expressions of effective volume and effective surface values when ball-on-three balls test is used for strength measurement. In other studies, we investigated the relationships between microstructure and material properties of dental ceramics and the effect of microstructural mechanisms on strength distribution of dental ceramics. I have also interest on multiscale modeling of failure of materials. In my two articles, we used Distinct Element Method for the simulation of fracture of advanced ceramics. The main reason that I used Distinct Element Method was to be able to model the large deformation of brittle ceramics which is not so easy with Finite Element Method. In addition to my main area, I shortly worked on the fatigue design of marine vessels. In one of my articles, we used Finite Element Method and fatigue analysis models, we predicted the lifetime of some structural details of a 4900 PCTC with hinged deck design. In the recent years, I have been also working on production of polymer (Polyprohylene, Polyvinylidene fluoride) fibers with melt-spinning and wet-spinning processes and mechanical characterization of the polymer fibers. In the research of polymer fibers, we are interested in the relationships between the processing parameters, material microstructural mechanism and material properties.
